Even tho that you think we were not interested, most of us are because if is an experiment that YOU are gonna make, is ALWAYS an interesting project. Besides, if someone is searching info about this pots, your videos could help a lot to take ideas and everything. I hope to see updates on this plants and I really hope it works at least with moss ^_^

I actually use wick watering with Leca and it works GREAT! Leca drags the smallest bits of water up and I found gently waters the roots. I also noticed that this eliminated the root die back from adapting to semi hydro.

Hi, it might work for you and that's great! but we all live in different climates and environments, things will not work for everyone like they work for you. Me, oh I struggle to maintain the leca humid with shorter pots and taller reservoirs, a little wick does nothing in my environment and climate sadly :p

MissOrchidGirl I can see that in very warm climates where the water evaporates very fast. Mine are all indoors so the Leca stays pretty moist a good amount of the time. Also I live in very cold winter so the Leca not being so saturated with cooler water I saw really helped a few of my phals. I almost lost one in semi hydro because the water was way too cold even though the house was warm. The cold gets in the bones of the house and water.

Hello Dani. I know a lot of girls in Russia who use Lechuza with phals for years, with a great success...they only use lechuza on the bottom of the pot, the rest is bark, topped with moss. I’m in US and I use Santino ‘ Arte’ self- watering pots, Santino ‘Orchidea’ wick self-watering and ‘Orchidea’ flower pots, the last one I use it as a pot holder and add wick to my pots. Phals love this “ wet feet” approach , especially schillerianas, they all got really big , I water much less and I can go on vacations worry free.👍

I use this setup with my LECA and it works great! Orchids do great with the wicking system. They adapt to the LECA so much easier. I haven’t had a single root die after converting to these type of pots. The only difference is I don’t use the lechuza pots I use these pots by the brand name Santino. I believe it’s called Santino self watering. I bought mine from Moldova. (It’s fabricated there so the price converts to less than 2 USD per pot.) You can order them off of amazon for like 18 dollars. It’s called santino orchidea. They are amazing. I have around 30 of them in this setup and I’m going back to Moldova soon and I’m getting 40 more. ☺️ totally with a try. That small wick that comes with it is about half an inch thick and it works great at wicking the water up the LECA.

Very interesting video! I bought a lechuza pot one year ago for a phal and I have to say that I had issues with burn roots. I think that the fertilizer is the responsible. In fact all the new roots stopped to grow when they touched the media (btw I mixed the lechuza pon with Seramis and it works great ). Overall the phal were a little it set back but he is on the good way for recovery ! For me it is not with buying it because it is expensive ( I have the 12cm pot in diameter and it is 15€ ) and semi hydro works better and it is cheaper 🤗

Hi , thanks a lot for the video . From my experience Lechuza pots are great for growing orchids, but its important to stick to the planting instruction /guide which comes with the pot. Soaking the Lechuza Pon and filling up the reservoir to the brim will kill every orchid immediately as the Pon stays wet up to three months or longer. I recommend to plant the orchid into the dry Pon and water it carefully and sparsely from above for at least 3 months without filling the reservoir .Only water when the Pon ist nearly dry .Only when the roots have grown into the substrate and the orchid shows good growth the reservoir should be filled. Hopefully your orchids will survive. Many greetings from Germany :-))

Ulli Kraus very useful info. i have many lechuza pots and they work very well with house plants(pon is at the bottom and mix with potting mix),but it killed my orchid with full Pon media. I may try your method later. :-)

Ulli Kraus I tried growing my Phals in Zeolite and had to stop that experiment after approx. six weeks, because the plants were deteriorating rapidly. The problem was overwatering and root rot. So I returned to Orchitop and Seramis, and this is what keeps my Phals thriving and happy. Best wishes from Berlin! Marc

Very informative Dani! I ordered self-watering pots, which are due to arrive today. I got them from Amazon without the wick. It has a...for lack of a better description, it has a false bottom, where the reservoir is underneath it. I will be doing some experimenting myself today. Can't wait to hear your update.

Hi Danny. I’ve been buying these sorts of pot since the year “0ne”, that’s a year ago. First from a company Santino with the wick only, fairly large oval pot without the water indicator. Then recently bought one from Todd’s (I think 🤔? senioritist 😬) Nurseries, nope. It’s is called Kelly’s Korner in Milford, NH. USA. I used the later for my tall dedrobium which needs in a tall pot and liner and water indicator. The dendrobium’s loving this in Leca and I’ve filled the pot with 1/3 water to keep system wet in my semi hydro ish setup, there is a water indicator as shown here but you’ll have change with a magic marker depending on water height you prefer in the Leca. Oh just received my den parishii ( its all your fault 🙃 my collection is expanding 😬) and it’s really cute, smallish and looks healthy. Hope I don’t kill it or set back its growth as I transferred from coco husk into semi. I’m keeping it wet as my “giant” noble. StY. Awesome!!! Btw -love this piece and your present, difference between fun and boring.

I'm kinda surprised by the lechuza pon mix, because it is almost the exact mix I use with my bonsai (and this is the first I hear about this substrate). It works miraculously well, that's why I keep growing in it, I ended with that mix due to some trial and error and also lots of research in the chemical properties. But that being said, I never use slow release fertilizer. In fact I usually repot all my plants I get from nurseries immediately after purchase no matter the season for simple reasons: 1) they usually overwater them because the plants stand in full sun whole day and they water it once a day, on a cloudy day, yeah, way too wet and for way too long 2) the usual potting mix they use is mostly peat with sometimes a perlite, but for trees this can kill them in a few month or a year depending on species, it's not really that good, so I rather repot with my free draining mix with zeolite/pumice(or perlite)/lava rock(or bark)... the outcome usually is seen in a few weeks when the plant starts growing like crazy 3) and the worst of all, it ALWAYS has slow release fertilizer and mostly in such horrible quantities I'm surprised it didn't burn all the roots to dust With the anorganic particle mix like the pon is, the slow release fertilizer actually works bad... the pellets touch water and around them for a while at least there's just a very high concentration of fertilizer until it disperses. Not a good idea at all. I usually use a very dilluted mix (more than it says in the instructions) of liquid fertilizer with my anorganic mixes... the fertilizer is spread evenly and in low concentration and it won't burn the roots. And the excess gets stored in the porous media so it won't affect the plant and cause other burns, especially if you water regularly (which I do). I hope this helps a bit some people who tried the lechuza pon mix and had their plants get killed to know why that might happen or they're thinking about using it.

I also have Howlea Lava Burst and I just put it in the S/H ....I guess I'll wait a few months and see what happens. I did break that clay pot and repot that phal I asked about and the roots came off the pot pretty easily compared to getting that stupid bark off the roots - we'll see how it does. It's my original so I'd like to see it flourish =)

Hi Dani Have you seen this site in the US, EasyGroHydro? They have an online store that sells individual component parts for growing orchids hydroponically- from culture pots, to water gauges to outer decorative pots. The inner pots appear to be more spacious than the Lechuza pots.

Thank-you for your videos, they are all so helpful for the beginner grower like myself. You've mentioned in previous videos that you live in a subtropical climate and that affects the types of media you use. I live in a semi-continental climate, with a warm, humid summers and cold winters. I'm wondering what type of media I should be using to re-pot my Phalaenopsis orchids. Any suggestions would be helpful!

Interesting experiment...we’re always looking for ways to save time. Let’s see if the setup works. I have a question that’s unrelated. I just received a couple of new species phalaenopsis orchids that are potted in spagnum moss and some perlite. The roots that are visible seem green and healthy. Unfortunately I have had the experience of new orchids coming with poor root systems and one which seemed to have developed root rot. I understand that you use semihydro but it’s not really an option for me. I tend to use orchiata bark. Would you repot the new orchids immediately? If yes, what mix would you suggest? I really want to give my new orchids every chance to survive and thrive in my home setup. Thanks in advance 🙏😄

I've been using these Lechuza pots for a while! Awesome with Paphiopedilums and anything that doesn't mind staying a bit moist (oncidiums, terrestrials, etc.), but for Phalaenopsis they're terrible - lost a couple Phals to root rot with them. Also - NEVER put them in just Lechuz pon, as the website recommends, as that is a total death sentence. Work great with hydroleca though.

Oh that's weird, on their website (link in description) they brag that their pon is suited for any plant when soil cannot be used.. as a stand alone medium. We'll see if their claim is true :) if it's damaging then I want proof, otherwise I cannot contradict them ;)

Hey Dani, I have a question for your next q&a: So I have an Oncidium Katrin Zoch for over two years now. It only came with one pseudobulb and past me didn't know much about orchids so I over-fertilized when it still had flowers causing it to loose all its flowers and never rebloomed since then. It did produce two new super tiny pseudobulbs (because of the setback) and it's working currently on the third new one but one and a half years ago its leaves started to yellow and also the old pseudobulb became light green to yellow. At that time I had it under artificial light on a north-east facing window but in december I moved it to a south-west facing window with a curtain. I also fertilized it with the seramis orchid fertilizer as recommended over the past one and a half years. So now I want to know what causes the yellow leaves? Is it too much/too less light or was it the over-fertilization or does it suffer from some kind of nutrient defficiency? Help :(

What's the difference between hydro ponics and just allowing the pot sit in the tray with water? I used leca and my paph is blooming with 5 blooms.
@allbackiceland
6 жыл бұрын
I believe a hydroponics system would have the roots sitting in just water (no soil, also called water culture) or in an inorganic medium that's constantly flushed with water. Semi-hydro, using inorganic medium and a water reservoir (like sitting in the tray), allows for more air to the roots and even some areas of dryness.

I bought several of these for my house and the substrate killed my plants, including a couple orchids. I was very disappointed. I now use them with just potting soil (not for orchids tho) and none of their substrate. The pots are beautiful but I wouldn’t purchase these again.
@slhelm4098
6 жыл бұрын
Their larger pots don’t use a wick, they are deep reservoirs with depressions and lots of tiny holes. Their substrate is supposed to be used with soil in the larger pots, but as someone else commented about burned roots and I agree. I wouldn’t even use the substrate with another type of media as I do believe the fertilizer burns the roots (leaves too and kills the plant eventually).
