Just for people who don't know, DO NOT use chemical dyes/box dyes on hair treated with henna. Several disastrous things could happen from awful green puke color hair, to extreme damage and chemical reactions. Literally could burn your hair. I did this as a kid and thankfully got the puke color results (was going for black)

I’ve bleached and colored over henna multiple times and been fine, as far as I’m aware it’s ok as long as it is 100% henna. Some companies add metals and different things that causes the nasty reaction so you can only do it if you are certain what’s in your henna. Most supermarket premixed dye types aren’t ok to dye over. Sorry you had a bad experience 😬 a friend of mine used to be a hairdresser 20+ years ago and used to be told not to touch henna because it could melt. Thankfully there’s a lot more information nowadays. Hope your hair recovered ❤ Apologise to the hairdressers! I feel the need to add, I do not mean indigo or black henna tattoo. Dying/bleaching over them will most definitely cause nasty reactions… I had my henna bleached out by a hairdresser the first time, who informed me it can only be done with the body after quality stuff- the green powder you mix. I spoke to different hairdressers who said the same thing but that doesn’t mean less caution. Just that it is possible. But we still did a strand test and we’re cautious. But it could be done. And yes with damage because henna is incredibly permanent and it takes multiple rounds of bleach to lift out. It didn’t melt at all, or turn a nasty colour but that doesn’t mean someone else wouldn’t. I didn’t have any indigo in my hair either. Always do a strand test and if anyone does go to the hairdressers for removal, PAY THEM DOUBLE because it’s VERY hard work 👍🏻 yes I did it myself another time but obviously going to a hairdresser is the best thing to do to be safe 👍🏻❤️

This is complete misinformation. Henna does not alter the hair structure at all, and actually creates a protective coating on the hair shaft, making it healthier. It is only true not to use chemical dyes too much on bleached, or in other ways chemically altered hair, but henna is healthy for all types of hair.

Leaving it in an iron bowl overnight and applying it the next day would give it a darker tint. Almost as good as black as good as a chemical based hair color. Full coverage. And adding indica powder and black tea instead of using water to make a paste would even enhance the color even further. Try it. And it even lasts longer and would never make your hair thin. The only catch is that you'd have to leave it on your hair for a long time. I leave it on overnight but 6 hours should do as well.

Far too many hairdressers and westerners who think they know it all about henna. Pure 100% henna (dyes as orange/red) CAN be dyed over with chemical dye as long as you are adding colour. Pure henna coats your hair strand which makes it pretty impossible for anything to penetrate through hence bleach may be a hit or miss. A lot of places if you are not careful will sell henna mixed with chemicals and this then changes the dynamic of how hair reacts to box dye. As I’m Indian, I’m fortunate to get pure henna directly from India. There are some reputable henna stores online which would be better to purchase from or if you can source it from India/countries where henna is produced, then that’s best.

Green counteracts red. Purple and blue do orange or yellow tones. If you want to tone out the red and get a more neutral brown then I would use something like green pesto , mint sauce. Shampoo that has dark green. Using a temporary colour spray for kids in green. Or a leave in conditioner with green. Then apply over the top with henna once clean. Bettwe still. Do the henna and then rinse out using leave in conditioner with the free tones and a green Shampoo. Etc and rinse that should neutralise it. But it could make the tone a little one dimensional

My mom always use henna mixed with indigo on washed dry hair which she would wash off just with plain water after few hours. This helps her have a rich auburn coloured hair, perfectly covering her greys. But if you prefer dark hair,on clean dry hair use a paste of henna which was soaked overnight. After few hours, just rinse off. When the hair gets dry or next day, make a paste of indigo powder, apply instantly, let it sit for 1-2hours,then rinse off. You will get dark brown hair color. To avoid dryness you could add olive oil in the henna paste. Hope these will help you as my mom too couldn't use any other type of haircolors coz of severe allergic reactions.
