As someone who made the Civ concept (check official AoE4 forums for Kameho) which chilly took inspiration off to his concept. There are a couple of differences, while the idea of Teleport was indeed as zMustamadmsn mentioned was inspired from cnc generals. However originally intended to be much more limited. Being able to teleport 5 units at the time between hideouts. Thought behind it was giving you the ability to harass their base and eco while defending your own base from attack at the same time. The Traps was originally thought of being 1 time use only. Similar to mines in Company of Heroes. Stealthed but revealed by scouts. Meaning having a scout and A moving would allow an army to kill any traps. Traps also supposed to be limited in total numbers. Say 15~20 or so. The worker elephants was something i put on my Khmer civ concept. But exactly the same function. Chilly put it into the Vietnamese as he wanted more elephant presence for the Vietnamese. And Beasty is on point that it was inspired by Age of Mythology. But it was very enjoyable to see the Vietnam Civ being not just conceptualised but also being put into practical test. Chilly ans the modder would most likely be estatic when they see this video of having the MAN himself play around with it. Great video!

I don't think the landmarks teleport is bad, but it shouldn't be immediate, it has a 1.5 minute wait for each use and allows you to carry 15 units, including siege. The thing about the elephant and the mines are broken hahahaha

Yeah originally we didn’t want to instant teleport. We were limited by what we could do in the modding tools. This was as close as I could get to the idea while still playing in the constraints and also making it balanced. In-game, the teleport has limited uses and isn’t OP in most cases.

The general issue with the mobile drop off site at least in Age of Mythology is that it's very easy for the enemy to hurt your economy when all they have to do is target the drop off site. Acquiring a new one takes up Town Center time. If they were to add such a thing to Age 4 I think they should make a universal drop off site, perhaps make it more expensive such as 100 wood. The universal drop off site would not only act as drop off for all resources, it would also hold all economy upgrades as well as train mobile drop off workers. That way you no longer need to worry about losing your mobile drop off worker, as you can always just build a drop off site and use that instead, of course at the increased cost of 100 wood instead of the regular 50. But on top of that, you can also make a new mobile drop off worker from that building, instead of taking up time from the Town Center. I think that would work well.

As Chinese variant it should have dynasty system like Ly -> Tran -> Ho -> Ming (via Wiki) with unique bonuses and buildings and Elephants could replace Imperial Official so you could click on that icon to find them easily (and produce them from village variant that increase limit of them). I would also replace "tunneling" keep with gunpowder landmark - castle age arquebusier and maybe some NoB variant would improve castle age.

Well, Vietnam was under China control at some point and the dynasty system worked the same way, so i thought its good opportunity to use Chinese mechanics (it could be better variant civ than Zhu Xi is 🤣) especially i feel like they need some power spikes and being variant or not means only mechanics adaptation. Still they did great job.

The current “popular” identity of Vietnam is around guerrilla warfare. So I played with that popular conception. I don’t think people know about a different kind of Vietnam. Plus, in history, Vietnam during the Middle Ages did pioneer guerrilla warfare and scorched earth tactics against the mongols and Ming. It’s not too far off the history while also providing an interesting identity that makes it stand out compared to other civs in the game.

@@ChillyEmpire Yeah but guerilla warfare doesn't mean explosive traps and underground tunnels necessarily. I would imagine in the middle age it was quite different. Mostly hiding in the forest and attacking by surprise.

@@Marc-gj9vx The original design called for traps to be punji traps, which were used even in the middle ages. Unfortunately we weren't able to create punji traps in-game given current modding constrictions. Explosive traps was as close as we could get. There was evidence of explosive mine-style weapons being used in Song dynasty china, so the technology being used here is historically plausible. I'm not going to pretend like we didn't have to compromise though - it's less than ideal, but as close as we could get to the original vision. Regarding underground tunnels - the use of tunnels in warfare in Vietnam was popular during America's fight with Vietnam due to the unique clay-like conditions of some areas of Southern Vietnam (where the Viet Cong operated). This made it conducive to digging out tunnels to hide in. So tunnel-style guerilla warfare mostly comes into the popular imagination through the American experience with this. But, tunnels and their use in warfare in general happened all over the world. It's not impossible to imagine that tunneling was a method that medieval Vietnamese troops used to get around. So again, it's plausible, but yes, it does feed into the modern trope, intentionally, as I felt that players would get more excited by concepts they recognize and associate with Vietnam. The original design had an influence system of connected tunnel networks, with limited garrison space. The instant teleporting mechanic was as close as I felt we could get while still keeping the vibe. The idea is that when fighting against Vietnam, they should feel like "they could be anywhere". For instance, if you build your teleport landmark in the southern side of the map, you could set up an isolated TC in the north that feels like it's unguarded, but there's an implicit understanding that Vietnamese troops can defend both locations while standing in one. It forces interesting strategic decisions on both players and it gives Vietnam an interesting tool for map control (which is one of their strong suits). That's my thinking anyway.

@@ChillyEmpire Problem is that it doesn't feel like a punji trap, it feels like an explosive mine field that you can cover the entire map with at almost no cost (just wood) while everything else in the game that is gunpowder related is locked behind age 4 and cost a lot of gold. Also really not fan of any "teleporting" ability in the game, i think its completely unrelated to underground networks and doesn't work the same at all in terms of micro, and underground network were already not very related to medieval vietnam.

the "empty garden" upgrade of the house comes from a military tactic in Vietnam when fighting with larger armies. They would leave their usual home with no food at all so that when the enemy raids, there would be no resources and they would starve to death without supply in the long run (since they are fighting in Vietnam's land). I believe that it should be more interesting of a mechanic instead of a boring upgrade on house just like that. I felt like a bonus of migrating and decaying enemy units when stepping on the land of Vietnam or raiding would work better. That is just my humble opinion btw Edit: also for the teleport thingy, it is better that they teleport within a period of town like 7 to 10s or something and you would need to be out of combat (no teleport if atk by an enemy unit). I believe that would be better (like League of Legends teleport if you don't understand my idea)

its just op, not vietnam at all not suit for aoe4 enviorment. the trap bomb is op, ppl will just abuse it everygame and turtle for wonder or whatever. in other word, it creates boring game experise suggestion will be like some unique ability for units. like maybe spears can stealth and brace. and deal some damage with an extra range. so it cost population, need micro, and can be counter by a scout. the teleport is op no doubt. the idea for vietnamese good at digging and living underground is good, but teleport is just op. will suggest something like house could have 3 slot for villagers, and it could stealth for like 15 second by active. so villagers got somewhere to hide, it wont be forever, and a very good way to dodge haras. the rocket elephant was WTF. only thing make sence would be springal elephant, which been used by khmer(actually its champa, later khmer conquered it) . vietnam was not an elephant civ in that era. dont be fooled by aoe2. what unique unit in vietnam was rattan unit, which knows as something could slip the cannoneer's bullet by ratten shield. later even been used by ming dynasty , china. maybe an unique Maa unit that have extra armor from gunpowder or maybe deal extra to gunpodwer unit or even just move faster. another unique unit choice would be "killtar" . vietnamese call all those horseback invader as "tatar" . and when mongolia invades, vietnamese soilders get a tatoo on the arms by "kill tatars" for moral, at the end they push back mongolian invaders twice. again should be something infantry base.

Hey there, designer behind the mod here. 1. From playtests, traps are actually rarely prioritized in a competitive setting. They are great for defending your siege line from flankers though, which was intentional. There might be some numbers overtuned here, but I think the concept works decently well and makes your tactical decisions more interesting. 2. Teleporting as it's implemented here is based on modding limitations. I got as close as I could to the ideas behind the original design given the restraints. If you try it in-game, it's actually not that OP. It has its uses in niche scenarios, and if played right, can be very powerful. But in my playtests people often skipped the teleport landmark. 3. Vietnam was absolutely an elephant civ in this era. But I agree, Rocket Elephants are just fun and cool, and not based in history. The original concept was for there to be a "leadership" elephant, but given modding restrictions, I felt that a Rocket Elephant was the best way to introduce a fun, unique unit to this civ and get players excited about the mod. 4. Vietnam was not historically unique in its use of Rattan for armor/shields. It was weird that Rattan Archers were Vietnam's unique unit in AOE2. I did give them the "Rattan Shields" tech in this mod to call back to their AOE2 identity though.

Aoe 4 died on console since crossplay :(. There used to be a few thousands like 4-6k ranked player and now we have 1674... Queue time tripled and some mods arent even playable against controller due to lack of players. Its such a shame to see the state its in now

@@bunyaminyilmaz3798 yeah we can and that is part of the problem half the community dont care and the other half wants nothing to do with crossplay. It separates the player base and skyrock queue time. I tried a 4v4 which previously had a 2-5 min queue. As of crossplay I tried 3 times to do a 4v4. I waited each time 2h in queue and gave up. Same for 3v3 and FFA. This change alone made my 3 friends who played this game quit so now I have no choice but to either get shit on by PC or just duel and 2v2. Duel is also a lot worst as the player base got cut, I often faces gold, plat or even lower as a Conqueror. This is another example of bad managing to make PC community happy. If we were all using the same device " controller" I'd be fine going against PC but right now the micro diff is too high and unfun to play against
