I've lived in LA metro for 40 years, native born through and through. I've traveled to NYC many a time, Boston, Denver, Washington DC, San Francisco, Las Vegas, etc. Eggs S lht is OK, nothing out of this world. As in most places, the best food is often not hyped, but the corner restaurants in your neighborhood or the street vendors, etc. And they are relatively unknown. Sometimes you think everyone eats that good--and are then disappointed when you do try highly rated restaurants (happened to me in NYC) that are expensive. In my area of eastern LA metro I grew up surrounded by high quality Mexican seafood restaurants. High quality Thai restaurants, and high quality Chinese, Korean, and Japanese restaurants. High grade sashimi, latest ramen crazes, etc. Amazingly plated Thai dishes. I was drinking Boba tea in LA in the late 90s (in high school) when 99% of the U.S. and world didn't know what bubble tea was, except in Taiwan and parts of California. Also very good high quality Peruvian restaurants, Brazilian, Argentine, and of course Italian. Note--I grew up in a working class neighborhood of LA metro. But even there ethnic restaurants were amazing, just not well known outside of the immediate area. Case in point, there's an Indian restaurant there we always passed by and stopped once to eat at. Didn't notice anything unusual, just odd that it was in such a dingy area no tourist usually even knows about. This week Michelin announced that restaurant was awarded a star. The same happened to a Mexican seafood joint Holbox, in LA just south of downtown--not the most touristy place or eye catching. All this time I've been eating great food, paying low or moderate prices the whole time. That's why when I went to an expensive restaurant in NYC, I was somewhat disappointed. In my head I was thinking--my mom could have cooked this.

@@ThisPineappleLife Yeah, of course cooking yourself is always cheaper. That’s just basic economics. The restaurant wouldn’t be in business if it cost the same amount. I wouldn’t be surprised if it cost at least $10 in ingredients for the average person to make a sandwich like that. Now, wholesale would be cheaper, because they would buy a gallon bucket of duck fat or gallon jugs of truffle oil or paste, but still.
