I’m so impressed you toured the sub!! I grew up with a brother fascinated by machinery so used to know all the facts about subs and tanks and planes 😂 I’ve also loved touring battleships as an adult on coastal vacations, but am so claustrophobic I can’t imagine doing a sub! Kind of gave me heart flutters just watching you guys do it. Lol If memory serves, I think those doors are called hatches? Adding another location to my to-see list! ❤ PS Always comment too soon and find more amazing stuff - LOVED hearing the history and learning about Alan’s training! I’ve only been here a year or so, is there a past video with more about him, about your background, how you started traveling, how you met and started traveling together, the backstory?

In the Ecuador videos I shared more about my background as I had a lot of live videos answering questions but in 2010 I took a career break and bought a one way ticket to Mexico to start a longer round the world trip of 1-2 years. The blog was just to give me some purpose and share my travels but after a year it turned into my job and I never went back to advertising agency life. Right before the pandemic I was based in Cuba and had been traveling for 10 years. I came home for 18 months and had always wanted to shoot video but never had the time so I decided to start with my phone exploring Nova Scotia as we had locked down so early we weren’t affected like other areas and could travel freely. I immediately loved video and after a year of shooting and editing on my phone I hired an editor in Indonesia. I also felt comfortable enough to leave and went to Ecuador, a country I knew well. A good friend is a tour guide there and wasn’t working so I hired him and we shot 100 videos all over the country. My goal was to inspire people to support local businesses and to explain traditional food so they would feel comfortable getting out of tourist spots. My editor suggested I come to Indonesia, specifically Sumatra because it’s known to have Indonesia’s best food. There I hired a great guide to has become a friend but one morning he invited me to breakfast and Alan was there. Alan taught himself English at an early age, learning three words a day at first. His vocabulary is shocking at times when we play wordle as he gets the words usually faster than I do. But he wanted to travel so he became a mariner. But his mother was so worried about him that he eventually quit and became a guide. Tourism just hasn’t rebounded in Sumatra so he decided to travel with me and he’s now teaching himself camera and photography work.

@@ayngelina THANK YOU 😊 I think I found you near the end of the Ecuador time, remember you going home for a bit and realized you’re Canadian. I need to go backwards and watch more! Your focus on food is so different than many of the other folks I watch, and even though I just turned 60 I don’t really jive with a lot of the retired nomad channels, or the party-hearty 20-somethings either! Lol Anyhoo, once house is sold and ready to go, I’ll be stepping up to the patreon level! I think I’ve mentioned before that I’d never really thought about SE Asia but you’ve added the entire area to my list! Happy fall to you both. 🍁

From the many culinary reviews of traditional Indonesian food, which is very diverse, there are many kinds of culinary delights, especially types of soupy dishes, on the KZitem channel. Very few foreigners or foreigners try the typical Surabaya - Lamongan dish, namely Tahu Campur. A type of soup dish that is usually found at night. Mixed tofu is a dish seasoned with black shrimp paste that you can taste when you are in the East Java area, especially in the cities of Surabaya, Gresik, Sidoarjo, Lamongan and the sellers generally come from the city of Lamongan and then spread to various city areas in East Java, which is why it is known as Lamongan Mixed Tofu. Tahu Campur is a dish consisting of a slightly thick beef soup with a mixture of shrimp paste, fried tofu slices, cassava cakes or lento, fresh bean sprouts, fresh watercress, yellow noodles and shrimp crackers.

Unfortunately, the sambal in lontong balap is part of the whole taste of lontong balap. I wish they would separate petis and chili, so non spicy guys like me could still get a good taste of petis but less chili spice.

I was born there ...my lovely hometown ... Actually Surabaya is just one of typical city.... Yess...so many historical heritage building (the bridge the Dam the bank building goverment office etc) Before might be Dutch colony plan to build Surabaya as big city ... But the plane is change after WW and independent of Indonesia ... So many civilliant involving at the war ...fight for freedom ...came from different region base on east Java ...assembly at the Surabaya ...and the war is held more than 10 days... And one of the great British general was killed... That why we as local Indonesian called Surabaya is "kota pahlawan" (the city of Hero)...the spirit at that moment is massive ...fight for freedom ...modern enemy support by allied army ...big ship landed at that city ...that why Indonesia prepared fullpower to stop and fight them ...( Moment is happening after Indonesia declare the independent) That is simple short history about my hometown ... Traveling ...sightseeing...! Yess ..my reccomend is go to malang city ....arround an Hour by car ... Mountaining natural small city ...and very worth to see and explore ...don't forget Bromo mountaint ... Some spot my reccomend at malang city ... 1.museum angkot... 2.jatim park 1,2 or 3 ...its huge spot ... 3.mount Bromo ... 4.water fall...(plenty waterfall in malang you can figure it our..) See...the wild animal...? Visit "TAMAN SAFARI PRIGEN"...experiencing see the wild free animal by CAR...(its very safe) and also its huge spot ... The spot that I mention is populair ...and HUGE ...prepare well schedule for one day for one spot ...because its realy realy huge and of course cheap ... 5. Alun alun batu ....kind small square spot for the local with bounce of cullinarry ...dinner ,streetfood, romantic spot is worth to explore ... 6.Tea plantation or Apple or strawberry gardening ...purchase right on the farming gardening spot ... And unique Apple of malang ...green small but very good... Still many more spot ... Cafe restaurant waterfall swiming pool (warm/hot water and sulphur) came straight of the mountaint ... Malang is worth .... Cullinarry ... And the cost is way cheaper.... And ... Anyone is welcome ...

Wouldn't suggest Surabaya as Tourist Destination. As layover to go to Bromo, yes. There's nothin in the city itself, everything is built to cater for the local population. They have enough stuff to get by but not enough as tourist attraction.

It's the fifth food taste after sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. It's hard to explain the flavor but it is savory and common in Asian foods. Some people think it's from MSG but it also exists in things like miso, mushrooms, Parmesan cheese, meat, and tomatoes.
