I have recently read "Annie John" and I feel like the relationship between and her mom was very much about the heartbreaking discovery that women are often the biggest upholders of patriarchy. The rift between Annie and her mom starts when Annie realizes that she could only be brilliant to her mom as a child. As a young woman, her intelligence doesn't matter, what is the most important is the way she carries herself, the way she looks, the way she appears to others. Annie starts resenting her mother as soon as she realizes that her mom does not support her in the want to rise above the community that only values girls as future brides. That devastating feeling of betrayal then tarnishes their entire relationship. I felt that very deeply, that heartbreak of expecting more from your mother, that "you were supposed to want more for me". Or at least that is my interpretation, but I find people's opinions of the /why/ of that conflict very interesting always. Tenderness is a very good way to describe Kincaid's prose :')

Im pinning this comment because its a beautifulllllll takeaway! And this sort of flippant attitude towards women with wit is a persistent through-line in her work. The importance of superficiality, now that you point it out, is so so present. But also I didn't know to name it that when I encountered it! I kind of love that she also didn't name it (in the explicit way she did with Lucy -- maybe not so much the importance of patriarchy-approved presence, but the lack of faith in an independent future for her daughter in the same way she had for her sons). Thank you so much for sharing your insight. Its lowkey making me want to reread it 😂

I cannot thank you enough for you are the reason why I thought I could tackle a Morrison and I just finished Sula and, oh my god. Speechless in the best possible way❤. I've also been binge watching your videos and I can't stress how much fun I have here in this virtual space with you and your books as my company. Also my Amazon cart is brimming , the way I have to keep my phone ready to note down all your recommendations, and it's all thanks to you. I didn't know your channel was what I needed all along, it's like every book you read instantly makes it to my list !! I love myself some infidelity, feminist communist writing and a whole lot of trauma❤ and I'm glad I'm not alone in this 😂

always a pleasure, Kat! I love watching people I know read ACOTAR for the first time. One thing about Sarah; she has an addictive writing style!! I finished the first 3 books in like a week, via audio! I'm reading Minor Detail (heavy but a good read), Champions of Fate (fantasy with decent character development), and In Search of a Prince (light and sweet contemporary romance).

Girl SOOO addicting. I literally said welp. There goes any TBR hopes I had for the rest of the year. Its just me and SJM til December, I fear 😂😂 I can TOTALLLLY see breezing through her books in a week!! Did you do the graphic audiobooks when you read them? Ok now that I am a fledging fantasy reader *insert hair flip* Im curious about the others out there! Im gonna look up champions of fate. And ugh, Ive only heard wonderful (and heartbreaking) things about minor detail. Have to make my way to that soon too.

@@katsfieldnotes LOL I didn’t know about the graphic audiobooks when I read them. That would’ve changed the game! My favorite fantasy trilogy is the Daevabad trilogy! Political intrigue with a pinch of romance. I read An Ember in the Ashes and absolutely loved it too.

Oooh I have Annie John on my shelves and now confess I am a bit intimidated by the themes! Mother-daughter dynamics can be so heavy-rewarding but heavyyyy. I’ll need something lighthearted for the in between moments. Also stoked that another lit fic lover is down with fantasy romance! I enjoyed both Fourth Wing and the ACOTAR series. I will defend hedonistic fluff reading until the cows comes home. Would love to keep hearing your thoughts on these books in between all your lit fic favs too. You contain multitudes, lady! Currently reading the It Came From the Closet queer essay collection. It’s excellent so far. ❤

I relate to this sooooo so much. Mother/daughter stuff is always so so tough for me too. I would say approach it when you're ready. Idk why Annie John gutted me the way it did. Like the read was stunning and so worth it, but also ouch ❤️🩹 (I love your idea of sandwiching it between fluffy reads too!) HAHAHAHA I am officially a covert, will be standing right there beside you on that hill (also, who gave SJM the AUDACITY! I was screaming at the Rhys and Feyre scenes! I was wholllllly not prepared!!) And ooooh, Ive heard really great things about that collection! Love to hear that you're loving it too!

And it seems like there is a teeny lil infidelity-in-literature-fan club and I am hereeeee for it! DO IT! I didnt realize this before but some public libraries carry the dramatized audiobook versions! Low steaks! (Although I will say like 40% of book one you might have to just power through. @katsfieldnotes . No way! I love to read, but what you do takes work and commitment. I don't read for quantity, I go for quality. That being said, I'll let you do it while I read 2 books a month. I smile internally when I watch the joy that books give you and others on KZitem... especially when it's young women of color. It makes me feel proud. Living in the city, observing, listening, and reflecting makes me want to travel back in time. (I'm 60). The world is so different, NY is so different. I could go on and on.
