Let’s face it. This trail system is a haul from just about anywhere. So the question is, “Is it worth it?” The Answer, yes! Especially, if you are going to make a weekend out of it, i.e. riding all the trails that the National Recreation Area has to offer. Having enough trail to kill 2.5-4 hrs of non stop riding will give you all you can handle. While there isn’t anything extremely physically demanding there is a lot of pedaling throughout the whole trail system. With no major descents or major climbs you’ll be treated to fun, flowy, undulating trail, the whole way through.
Winding in an out of coves along the shores of the Fontana Lake you’ll be hard pressed to stay on the trail as you take in the beautiful lake views with mountains poking up in the background. With two separate loop systems governed by a weekly schedule you can pack 40+miles of trail in if you opt to camp and make a weekend out of it, again, making the drive ever more worthwhile. Keep in mind the campground is only open April 16- October 16, though, there are a few private camping options outside of the forest.
