I grew up in a place called Shoeburyness, and after school we used to sneak into the Shoeburyness Army firing range. Checking of course that there were no red flags flying, ( red flags up live firing taking place) One of the targets was fuselage of the TSR 2 which used to play in. I never dreamed of taking part of the instrument panel as a souvenir, but still have great memories of this wonderful aircraft. By the way they also had a Harrier minus its undercarriage hanging from a crane ? The TRS2 always looked very familiar to the American Vigilante.

A lot has been said about TSR2 nearly bankrupting the country , when in fact it was the result of scraping TSR2 that more or less bankrupt the uk ecconomy. any money spent on getting TSR2 to the point of scrapping was lost anyway and cancellation had the followingcosts, 1) BAC more or less disolved and all the lost jobs in BAC and subsidiary companies meant huge social security bills, 2) UK had to compensate TEXAS industries for the no longer required equipment same for IBM, 3)UK invested heavily in brit spec F111and lost a large amount when they cancelled the order, 4) in between cancelling TSR2 and cancelling F111, UK spent money buying F4 phantoms and converting them to uk specs , though phantoms served well they never managed the roles TSR2 was designed for. IN 1983 THE CONSERVATIVE GOVT explored the costs of the Wilson TSR2 farce and the chances of green lighting a TSR2 rebirth, the results were that taken from the date of cancellation, had the pre production TSR2 gone into RAF production and notsold abroad the final figures post cancellation date would have cost the country 8 - 10 ttimes less than points 1-4 , would have secured BAC and avoided the financial catastrophy of 1968 - 1972. as for restarting TSR2, the 2 aircaft in museums were to all intents and purposes husks, Roy Jenkins had done so good a job of destroying jigs, blue prints, paperwork, spares, a complete job 2ndonly to canadas avro arrow that the whole project would have to start from scratch and was not viable.

What's equally interesting is the effect that going ahead with the TSR2 might have had on the UK aircraft industry. There would likely have been no Tornado and as we wouldn't have bought more Phantoms because there wouldn't have been the F-111 debacle, we would have been left looking for an air defence fighter to replace the Lightning in the 70's. The RAF were very keen on the F-15 and you can easily see us going down that route. And that may have meant no Typhoon development in the 90's, leaving the British aircraft industry in dire straights by 2000.

Operational requirements made the design obsolete!!! It happens!!!!
@vogonpoet5860
Жыл бұрын
@@richardvernon317 except operational requirements as laid out in 1960 for TSR2 would not change until 1990s hence tornado which is basicaly a shrunken version of TSR2 with different wings. the need for a fast tactical bomber, strike/interceptor, recon aircraft is still a military requirement. the operational requirements argument is one usually used by people with no idea. split it up, TSR , TACTICAL bomber, conflicts such as FALKLANDS, DESERT STORM AND DESERT SHIELD showed a need 30+ years after TSR2 for a tactical bomber (see B52 and Russian bear), STRIKE bomber, the same conflicts showed a need for fast, in and out precision bombing, RECON , from the days of SUN TSU to modern drones the same truth has held, the general that ignores recon has lost. mountbattens financial and personally biased argument of 5 buccaneers for 1 TSR2 is economic sense if both planes do the same jobs and perform the same BUT THEY DONT, BUCCANEER could perform strike missions, BUT TACTICAL OR NUCLEAR DELIVERY WAS OUT OF ITS LEAGUE , as was deep penetration strike and recon , WHY ? Tactical whether nuclear or the type of area bombing used in desert storm reuires bomb capacity beyond buccaneer, deep penetration recon or strike accepting enemy missile and aircraft speeds requires either fighter ability or mach 2+ speed somethings bucaneer didnt have, remember that the fastest fighter to date is the mach 2+ EE Lightning, and this is a plane that TSR2 left standing during a test flight using under powered engines, so to be truthful what Mountbatten should have said was for every 1 TSR2 , you would need at least (due to vulnerability from slow speed helping interception), 2 vulcan bombers (vulcan becomes horizontaly unstable near full speed) for area/nuclear bombing, 2 hunters/ buccaneers for strike and 1 EE Lightning converted to fast recon plus 2 ariel tankers for refueling. thats 7 aircraft plus 21 crew to do the range of jobs 1 TSR2 and 2 crew might be expected to do in 1960 - 1980 period. when looked at coldly allowing for enemy attrician the 7 planes against 1 TSR 2 and crews risked doesnt make any logic in fact (assuming Buccaneer is a single seat) when you look at it his figures dont work for the cost of 1 TSR2 you can have 5 Buccaneers, BUT that means for 2 TSR2 aircrew, 1 set of 5 ground crew ,1 tank of fuel and 1 set of ordinance, you need 5 BUCCANEER aircrew, 5 sets of ground crew, 5 tanks of fuel, and 5 sets of ordinance, not to mention spares, so apart from the MYTH of changing Operational Requirements, even Mountbattens maths dont work, to do the roles of 10 TSR2s would in the 60s have required 70 conventional planes.and the 5 buccaneers you could buy for the price of 1 TSR2 would only accomplish a third of the requiremenst at more vulnerable slower speeds. TSR2 cancellation was purely tit for tat politics and in mountbattens case pure spite , it is a fact that post ww2 Mountbatten went to extrordinary lengths to try squashing any aircraft that had connections with vickers supermarine, Attacker, Swift, Schimitar, TSR2, were if possible scrapped or restricted under influence of the first sea lord, in favour of often equal but more often inferior Hawker or Siddely aircraft. politicaly UK has always been blighted by blinkered tit for tat, conservative govt says yes to something , next labour govt cancells or scraps it, and vice versa. its almost instinctive.

@@richardvernon317 whats with the broken and proven incorrect OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS record and have you ever done any research or do you now everything about nothing. just for you , some facts, TSR2 XS2019 flew 27 times But was not operational due to missing or inferior equipment, a result of the thinking at the time thaf said dont put your cutting edge teck or nuclea ordinance inth a plane until its signed off. you said its nav was poor, 2019 test flew using basic ground following Radar which gavejust the nav required for testing ! in fact TEXAS INSTRUMENTS had produced but not yet delivered ground tracking radar for TSR2 that would subsequently be used by USAF and Mk1 tornado not to mention Jaguar. weapons control was bespoke to TSR2 and later went to other RAF planes, onboard computer for 2019 was rudimentary and IBM were in partnership with TEXAS and had a new gen system ready for production TSR2. FINALY 2019 began test flights using dirtier burning and underpowered engine as fitted to Vulcan, engines which still managed to produce enough power to leave a lightning chase plane standing. once 2019 reached th required 30 test succesfully 2020 and 2022 would be fitted with the new engines (which eventually went to power concord), tracking nav, weapons and avionics comps from America, ready for pre production trials, with upgraded 2019 joining 7 new airframes to make the first batch of 10. your uneducated or simply biased views fail to take into account the fact that once in service there is no reason TSR2 service carreer shold be any shorter than vulcans 30 yrs, phantoms 30+, hunters 40yrs, lightenings 30+. that would have given TSR2 an average life of 35 years meaning it could have seen service upto 2000 or later. so i have to ask where did you get your example of the TEXAS FLR ATTACK RADAR, because this system designed for production TSR2 is still working and in use in other planes ! which exactly of its required roles did you as a production TSR2 Pilot find it unable to perform that pilots of xs2019 thought it capable, I am very interested to find out exactly how you were able to put the plane through its combat trials when 20 and 22 fhe trials planes never left the ground. or is this a result of flying TSR2 in flight sim x, I would also be interested is your proffesional flight rating of Elon Musks mars ship. remind everyone, exactly how many fligt hours you spent accessing TSR2s capabilities and systems ? i dont mind reasoned argument and stand ready to be proven wrong, but if all you have is nonsense and unresearched bull, then let me remind you of a sayin, "itsbetter to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than open it and ermove all doubt

The death of TSR2 is symptomatic of so much political ineptitude in Britain, particularly in the aircraft industry. Time and time again, British politicians have squandered superb talent …and public money…in the most criminal manner. Nimrod and Harrier are two more recent examples. Not as spiteful as TSR2, but hugely wasteful and dismissive nonetheless.
