This film is really something special; I'm a rider myself, I can't even explain the feels it gave me, there were a few times I actually got goosebumps and sweaty palms. (this story is mainly for other riders, if you care to read how I almost died lol and why I relate so much to this film, and there is a point at the end) So when I was younger I used to own a GSX-R 750 all worked up and I rode it daily to work and shit but rode like I thought I was one of these guys racing the TT. One day I had a nice flat-out stretch and really kicked it up, I had never red lined the bike all 5 gears to the top before and it was one of those things I just wanted to get done, even if only once. I was in 4th gear going about 165 and climbing fast, as I went to kick it into 5th a deer jumped out in front of me and in the middle of shifting up I made a dumb split-second decision and kicked it back down, but I jumped a gear and clicked it down to 3rd. When I let go of the clutch I went from almost 170 to around 125/30 and obviously the rear tire grabbed a little (as I was also leaning to the left to get in front of the deer) and it gave me some of the worst, absolute scariest speed wobbles I've ever dealt with in my life. I really thought I was gonna high side and die, I literally saw my life flash before me when it started happening. I've been riding long enough and managed not to panic and crash, but I came god damn close. That ended up being the last time I rode that bike, a week later I was at the shop to buy a new tire and ended up leaving with $4,500 instead of my bike. I stick to cruisers now, got a harley 883 as my daily and a honda rebel that was turned into a bobber custom that I ride to shows and gatherings. But that gixer, I just knew that it was going to be the death of me, or at the least give me a life-altering injury. There are plenty of times when I regret selling it, but then I think about my mom and dad having to go to my funeral and I know I made the right call. Which brings me to my point; of the 5ish guys who they stuck to mainly during the film, only one managed to make it to the end of the season unscathed. Guy went down so hard his bike blew up (he seems surprisingly okay all things considered), Connor flew off the side of a cliff (I thought FOR SURE he was dead the first few times I watched that, he's a very lucky kid), Ian got his leg smashed up so bad they almost had to cut it off (props to him though for making history becoming the first and probably only man to be a 5 race 5 winner TT champion), and unfortunately Paul Dobbs had an accident (clipped a wall or curb and flew into a bus stop) that ended up taking his life. When you ride like lighting, you crash like thunder. It's not a matter of "if", it's a matter of when, where, and how bad. These guys know this, and I know this now, but I see a lot of guys taking risks with their lives daily on their bikes and they really think "that'll never happen to me". I thought the same thing at first, and in reality it takes a crash or a really close call to actually wake you up to the true dangers of this sport and of riding in general. More riders need to be aware of this and take the right precautions so that you don't die when it happens to you. Wear your leathers and helmet at the very least for fuck sake, it always makes me feel some kinda way when I see guys doing 120 on the freeway with their girl on the back and all they got on is a t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers. That's just asking for it. Anyway, if you're still reading up to now I commend you, and please remember to stay safe out there!

Hans miller With all respect sir, it’s about context. We all know who societal heroes are. Like you say, firefighters, soldiers, medics and the like. But in terms of sport and particularly motor sport, these racers are heroes. It’s all about context, so I don’t really understand your vapid point. Come on man, don’t be so negative. If you can’t personally distinguish between the two contextual meanings of hero, then not only do I feel sorry for you, but you are extremely naive.
@stanettiels7367

Hans miller Well it’s all about context. Like if a business which employs 10 staff was about to collapse and jobs would be lost and some guy came in, restructured the business and saved all the jobs. Then that guy may be classed as a hero to the people who had their jobs saved.

Hans miller I know exactly what you mean. I’m of the same opinion as you for the most part. Like footballers being called heroes for winning a cup or whatever. It’s ridiculous. But when these guys only know one thing, which is racing bikes and they are prepared to put their lives on the line to win and earn money the only way they know how. To support their families the only way they know how, then they are heroes. Maybe not to you or I, but they are to their families. And to people who respect how much they risk for it.

I've never heard of it from any sports events. I just happened upon it from surfing around on Y/T. This gave me goosebumps. it's nothing like I've ever seen. after watching these clips over and over, the one thing that sets me back is when these guys pull out of a wobble. that scares the shorthairs to watch that happen. I experienced that once a long time ago but not even close to this speed. not even close to not even close for that matter. several clips the riders say it's an addiction. Hell... it's an addiction just watching these clips. Some Day... I don't know how but some day I have to go there and see this.

I have to say that under the circumstances with it being Guy Martin and all the cameras on him etc, that sad little jobsworth time keeper should have let it go with just a quiet word in Guys ear not to do it again rather than hand him a 30 second penalty for such a miniscule infringement after Guy had been out there risking his life for 2 hours to entertain everyone. I particularly didn't like the smug way the jobsworth said that the 'Time Keepers word is law' this is typical behaviour from a mini Hitler jobsworth when he finds himself in a position of authority.

This was clearly not aimed at US audiences- only UK and other European audiences. Most Americans would struggle to understand the speech from the heavy accents and dialects of these British (English, N. Irish, etc.) and Manx riders. The Isle of Man TT, is, with the Dakar Rally, Pikes Peak and maybe the Baja 1000, in my opinion, the single craziest and most unbelievable vehicle races there are- two or four wheels. The Mille Miglia is the craziest motor race that has ever existed, but that race isn't run anymore. But as for the TT, It's hard to believe such a race still exists and even harder to believe that people still actually want to participate in it. It's quite an incredible spectacle. A race like this has no business being part of any scenario where riders would be forced to compete in it for championship points or anything else- I hope that never, ever, ever happens. But since the locals and riders like it so much and if it is to exist, the race should remain a voluntary race. That I think is a good compromise.

musashidanmcgrath Northern Ireland is of course Irish and is located on the same island as Ireland, but like England, Scotland and Wales, it is part of the United Kingdom. Yes, the TT was last on what is now the MotoGP calendar in 1976. Giacomo Agostini led the boycott of the TT and it was eventually taken off the calendar and replaced by the British motorcycle GP at Silverstone.

@@tinlieu4696 - Prior to that year's TT, the bikes would have to come to a full stop in a painted box area, and then proceed to their pit, at speed. But after some close calls, they changed the rule to an absolute speed limit after the rider crossed the pit entry line. While that all makes sense, I think that a 30 second penalty is insanely over the top for an infraction like that. I don't know if they changed it, but maybe an incremental time penalty would be better. If you're 10% over the speed limit, then a 5 second penalty; 20% over would be a 10 second penalty, and so on. In a race where the top few riders are within a few seconds of each other, a 30 second penalty is like a DSQ.

It's one thing to have the racers in deadly situations, but they are super careful about keeping the non-racers as safe as possible. The TT is just one bad incident away from being cancelled forever.

Glenners You sir, are a fucking 24 carat idiot. Ian Hutchinson won every class in the TT in 2010. He almost lost his legs in an accident and after 30 operations is now winning TTs again in 2015. This race makes ALL other forms of motor sport resemble flower arranging. What do you do, other than talk shit on YT?

What you didn't see is the hundreds of reps he probably did. Ain't all about how heavy it is, especially if you're training to do something like this.

Joey died aged 48, not 49. Roberts accident at the TT was in 1994 not 1998. You'd think for a proper production they would get those details correct.

So what exactly happened to Guy with the speed trap? Is the speed trap on the course or was he riding too fast in the pit lane? If the speed trap is on the course was he riding too slowly or too quick?
@AnLuuansworld
10 жыл бұрын
speed trap in pit lane i believe. went a little over a tenth of a kph over 60 and was penalized 30 seconds. ridiculous. politics is what i reckon. they were after the eccentric stepchild of the tt. doubt they would really care about someone that has sponsors up the wazoo. but that is my opinion as far as the speculation. fact is: 60.11kph over 60kph.

There's no such place as Humberside any more. It's now East Yorkshire and it was Yorkshire before Humberside was created.
