Historical accuracy _is_ representation, and writing a book about an underrepresented historical culture without misrepresenting or romanticizing that culture is inclusion.

It’s representation done the right way, instead of the modernized “noble savage” prog-wash which dominates the vocal market today.

As anticipated, my post containing a link to pre-order Werner Herzog’s Mexico from a well known book retailer that there is no point specifying was deleted by the YT surveillance bot. (Honestly, YT makes conveying crucial information as hard as getting water from a stone). I now have the UK publication date, however: 5 September, i.e. tomorrow as I type this.

A visit today to my local branch of the retailer whose name combines aqueous fluid with mineral aggregates proved sadly fruitless beyond establishing that the book in question can only be ordered through their website rather than in-store. However, the online retailer that shares its name with a South American river that is not the Orinoco shows it being in stock, whereas yesterday it was not listed at all as far as I could see.

"Because is full of angry ginger people" that the best definition of Ireland ever made !! Thanks for the review , as a Mexican I always believe that my culture is really not used on modern media and we have the most heavy metal gods and legends. Also thanks to mention that this is a D&D 0e clone. Also, the problem with aztecs is that the dark legenda made by the spanish made them looks like crazy blood thirsty Khorne woshipers instead of the real culture behind us

Anyone thinking of running this could get quite a bit of inspiration from Simon Levacks novels, Demon of the Air (2004), Shadow of the Lords (2005), City of Spies (2006) and Tribute of Death (2007). They are also a very good read!

Ma-KWA-heet'l is probably the closest to the pronouncing correctly (if there is such a thing for a "dead language" since the mexica people no longer speak the old Nahuatl anymore haha.

Macuahuitl is really cool and has a lot of lore if you want to run something approaching an authentic Mesoamerican world. I like it so much I wrote a modern day adventure for it based on chessy Mexican horror movies. Also you can die in chargen.

McFlurry: the Role Playing Game. Ma-cua-huit-el (mah-cu-ha-hu-it-el). No shit given, just a pronunciation guide for any who might be interested. One of my favorite local spots in Ridgewood, Queens is Ltauha (Ahuatl is the family name of the owners grandmother). It's been awhile since my Meso-American anthropology class (mid-90's) but haven't we learned since then that the Aztecs were trying to prevent all of existence from ending? As far as the drift from role playing a character that challenges ones ability to portray another being vs the current model of just being the most perfect version of oneself; my observation is that this change started with the Living campaigns in the late 90's early 2000's. It used to be when you went to GenCon (or any other convention) the events ALL had pre-generated characters with a write up to explain party interactions and relationships. You would sit down at a table, usually with a random mix of strangers, and the DM would have a method of distribution that they preferred, you would read your character sheet and start playing. Bingo, bango, bongo. TACOS! Tohit Armor Class zerO Skin changing is rarely done by a beneficial being in the Americas. The idea that a shaman/druid/magician would take on an animal form is very Western. The danger of losing oneself permanently is always a prominent part of the story. Only sorcerers who truck with unsavory spirits gain that ability. IN the vast majority of mythology of the Americas the essence of a thing should be unchangeable in the here and now. Most of the stories are about understanding and accepting the reality of their existence. You know stoicism. Continuity in art can definitely help with the overall feel of the game/setting. But how do you show action or how does the picture say a 1000 words in this traditional aesthetic? What would have been really interesting is to use the glyphs to teach the players how to read them and gave clues and important dialogues, or even basic spells written in glyphs. That's a great way to use gaming to educate and improve society in general.

The belief was to keep all of existence going through the act of sacrifice to the Sun (I'm sorry that I can not recall the name of the deity off the top of my dome). Yes.

Spanish transliteration for Nahuatl is awful. It's "ma-KWA-weet" if you wanna be super accurate. (The L is silent in many modern dialects, the original sound is one you couldn't pronounce.)

I couldn’t watch this in Costa because their WiFi restricts it, presumably because their T&C - which I haven’t read - prohibits human sacrifice. You can’t even read or make comments on any videos, furthermore. You may be interested to know, if you don’t already, that Werner Herzog’s script for his unmade film Mexico, which tells the story of the conquest from the Aztec point of view - initially depicting them as aliens, as the Aztecs believed them to be - is due to be published shortly. (I don’t know the date but you can find out more from the interview with Herzog in today’s Guardian). BTW you are guilty of an egregious mispronunciation - there is no such word as ‘pronounciation’.
