The RPG Pundit said something to the effect that Vampire the Masquerade forced GMs into a living world where the history of the relations between the vampire clans followed the plan of their Storyteller supplements. Because they were frustrated writers and wanted a captive audience for their visions of the world. Sooooo, no matter what stories you wanted to tell as a GM in your own game, you had to follow the history of the great failed writers of the RPG or be left behind in the lore.

The brilliance of early Warhammer is the battle against chance represented by Chaos. The idea that the more dice you roll, and you roll dice to escape your fate, the quicker your end comes (except for the Slayer who (ironically) became unable to fulfill his mission. Your character is a real person with a really crappy job. The notion that when you are sick or injured you visit a surgeon, who may or may not be sober and a quack, was like the heavens opening in my rpg journey.
@needmorecowbell6895

Having my first character die on the operating table of a surgeon, leeches in one hand, unsterilized saw in the other, drunk as a skunk was a milestone moment. The end of the fated heroes' journey, lying there in a pool of blood, missing an ear, three fingers, and a foot was everything I could hope for.

Your editing and skits get better every time I check your channel, Jim. Love many games from your list, will check out those that I am not familiar with. Being mostly a fantasy and recently sci-fi enjoyer, I have a lot of ground to cover in other genres. That being said, I'd appreciate your takes on these two, too. Do you have any thoughts on Runequest, old and more recent? Do you intend to review, say, Mothership?

Heavy Gear and the Silhouette system are amazing and I love them both. HG 4th edition is based more on the Blitz miniature rules and is much less rules dense. The rules still allow you to take characters from the RPG and play them on tabletop, but the rules out of a Gear are a bit more narrative. I still really enjoy it, but I’m a Heavy Gear fanboy. That’s a good list! I can’t really argue with it. I also love Cyberpunk 2020. Only thing I’d add is Pendragon!

Swap Mage for Vampire, Dragon Warriors for Advanced Fighting Fantasy and we're there 😊 Lovely to see Fong Shoy and Under the Fridge in there. Heavy Gear, be still my bleating heart, still have a complete run of First edition. Dammit you included Vampire as well, guess that's what I get for writing as I watch 🤣 Swap THAT for AD&D. Glad we can agree everything since the Millesbian has been horseshit 😂 "powered by The Apocalypse"? Do me a lemon...

Good list, Grim. All very influential games. Mage was marred for me by the postmodernism and paradox issue, since collective belief observably doesnt make something so, or there would be sound in space and people could survive elevator crashes by jumping at the last moment. 😂 Ars Magica's magic system was a tad more awesome IMO, but stuck in a historical paradigm. The Order of Hermes in Mage is a nod to them. The cover you showed for Over The Edge was the first edition. The second edition was just a reprint with a crappier cover.

In no particular order: Atlantis by Bard Games. Truly inspired D&D clone. Talislanta was a worthy sequel. Call of Cthulhu. Long Live Lovecraft. Pathfinder 1st ed. Heavy Adventure, light role playing with Lovecraftian goodness baked in. AD&D. It was in the air you breathed in the 80's Gamma World. Post Apocalyptic joy! Star Frontiers. Cops & Cthuloids In SPACE!!!! Mutant Epoch. Gonzo PA fare Even better the second time around. Star Trek from FASA & Last Unicorn. Cthulhu Tech. Great potential, lacking in the delivery. Rifts. An Acid Trip of an rpg experience.

Allow me to momentarily fanboy for Cypher System. I only learned about it last year, though it was initially created via Numenera more than a decade ago. The tools Cypher System gives to the GM, and thereby the players, are powerful, flexible, and liberating. When a system is designed in order to empower players to be creative in their RP, rather than requiring a mess of house rules, home brew, or 3rd party add-ons to function well, you know you've struck gold. It's definitely a narrative-based system, but the mechanics of it are enough for me to still enjoy even though I came from AD&D and Shadowrun.

Thanks for the top ten list, Jim! I say keep 'em coming! As someone who is looking to explore more games outside of D&D, videos like this are really useful. There's a lot of wisdom behind your choices so now it's just a case of finding copies to some of these editions. It'd be interesting to see how the list would change if you could only include more modern editions.

Question: Although there may be -overlap- Can there be a distinction between a list of " Favorite " rpgs and the " Best " rpgs of ALL TIME? I like your list Grim, it's very You. Yet part of me senses if one were to " force" a subjective eyeglass to one's picks some games would not be in the " Best " of all time list -but most assuredly be in your " Favorite".

Great list, I totally forgot about feng shui, masquerade is also what got me into ttrpg in the first place, like you said, it became too bloated and too focused on the metaplot and undead politics, V20 brought back a bit the more personal horror aspect though. A personal favourite of mine is deadlands and savage worlds in general, I think it did what dnd 3.5 tried to do but much better, it's also one of the few games I can think of whose mechanics perfectly encapsulate the mood and feeling of the genre it's trying to emulate, you really feel like a two fisted badass pulp hero with it.

Interesting list with its mix of criteria for inclusion; mechanics - considered in isolation and as a means of genre emulation - setting, tone and industry influence. I’ve played or run all of them except ‘Heavy Gear’. If pushed to add something, I’d probably go with Ars Magica on the purely subjective grounds that faux medieval settings are my jam but also because it did something genuinely interesting with the magic system and the adoption of ‘troupe play’.
@MercutioUK2006

That intro fucking broke me, I can't take anything else seriously now...... I'd agree with most of the inclusions here. I have to examine the setting/genre engagement, originality, mechanics and the sheer amount of gonadositude.....how much it grabs you by the balls. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay was a brilliant game.....not only a system that permitted easy house rules but the career advance scheme, setting and depth of engagement.........plus, a massive amount of support and a savage combat system. I LOVED WFRP and at one point owned everything from 1st edition and Hogshead.......it's fabulous. CoC. Star Wars D6.....(I had all of that as well) V:tM (Yep, got it all) D&D.......excellent choices Mr. G For my sins, I never played Dragon Warriors. I am ashamed. (Morning wood of Aeons.....I'm done now, too much internet for one day......)

Wow what a nostalgia trip, I totally agree with Mage being a perfect magic system, and I would dare to say is a better game then Vampire even if is not that popular, and CoC yes one of my favorite but because the setting, but the BRP is awful, swingy, rigid, CoC deserved a system like Storyteller or better, BRP is such a bad system CoC is now in the 7th version and nobody play that version, yes BRP uses percentages, but that is the only good thing about it, and you are better using Gumshoe, or Cthulhu Dark, or even Modiphius 2D20. And I said that with love because CoC and Delta Green are on my top 10 as well. I have to check the other games you mentioned, thanks for mentioning them!
