One of the finest 'one-offs' in British jazz. Even today Tubby would be a great musician and composer. unique.

I'd put Deuchar/Hayes up against any trumpet/tenor team in New York or L.A. during that era. Those guys were just simply phenomenal. And so sad that only die-hard fans know who they are today.

We have a great tendency to downgrade any talent that emanates from this country; this has changed in as much as the media driven approach has lionised the mediocre.Any one of those musicians would have worked regularly anywhere in the world from, Ganley, King, Wellins right through to Hayes - truly world class.

The worst downgrading was of Ronnie Scott, who also downgraded himself. I can't understand why his jokes, and his club, are the main things for which he's remembered. I think he was a marvellous player, and a tragic loss. And who talks about Derek Humble? Furthermore, we are now in the process of overlooking Chris Biscoe, who has surely been around long enough to have gained some recognition. And then there's Trevor Watts.......I'd better stop.

Tubby's solo phrasing reminds me of paul Gonsalves'. Remember the driving force of Crescendo and Diminuendo in Blue at Newport ? So great to see two Bari's on the deep low end.....what a powerhouse band. Perfect brass articulation. Sometimes we forget there was some great things happening across the big pond.

We had some great musicians back then. Didn't Tubby go off to the States and play with Count Basie?

Jimmy Deuchar's composition and arrangement - could make 11 players sound like 18, love it!!!

This just further confirms what a giant was Tubby Hayes.

jazzrealities Is it possible to see this whole program not in parts? There should be somebody around to upload the while show. And the Ronnie Scott performance with Tubby Hayes as well. In any case great music by a wonderful artist. Dr. Michael Frohne

I remember a story that a BBC executive ordered some tapes wiped after a Cecil Taylor broadcast. Music criticism in a concrete form.

This certainly happened to the Albert Ayler gig at the LSE. I think then BBC had to economise by re-using tapes, which were very expensive in those days. If only they could have done a deal with the National Sound Archive...
