Tulum is so exploited at this point. It used to be authentically laid back and chill decades ago. The area has been "hugged to death" by tourism. I really hope PE doesn't meet the same fate. It still has the perfect mix of authenticity and comfort.

I was in Tulum the first time in 1989 (old) and there was nothing there. We stayed on the beach in a cabana. The real one with no floor (just the beach). We hanged our hammocks in there and that was it. The shower was a bucket from the well and there was a "restaurant" where we had our meals. You could just walk up to the ruinas, no entry. Now it is something else. Not sure I will ever experience that again maybe a bit when I visited Myanmar but not close.

We booked a family trip to Mexico in July without knowing anything about those differences, except that PE and Oaxaca in general seemed less travelled. We are glad about our decision, the more info we gather. We hope to provide our kids with more of a backpacking experience than an all-inclusive vacation, and I think 8 days on the Oaxaca coast (split between PE and SA) will be perfect! That was a pretty good breakdown. I went to Mérida in Jan, then randomly decided to check out Puerto for a week not knowing anything about it, and ended up staying for 4.5 months. Just got back home July 1. Stopped in Playa del Carmen on my way home for a week to visit a friend and check out the area. PDC is pretty gross...that whole side of the country has been ruined by hotels/gift shops catered to making Americans spend money. Puerto was amazing! I'll be going back in the fall. There are a few spots with good internet.y apartment in Tamarindos (between Zicatela and La Punta) was totally fine, and I never had a single issue with connection/speed.

Very nice well done review of these two places, I have lived in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara for over twenty years. Tulum City not the beach has always been one of our favorite places, we know there are the expensive beach places, but the town of Tulum seemed more Europeans and fewer Americans. Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is worth the visit with a large number of birds species and great scenery. It was expensive, we paid $140 per night for a tent, but it was a very nice tent. If you are interested in pre-Colombian societies Tulum is a good jumping off point. Oaxaca is a place we have been several times but never the beaches, my wife is a Mexican and we live at the beach but I never considered the Oaxacan beaches. We will give them a try soon. The one thing I will say about Mexico in general, every significant beach community has a broad variety of accommodations, from $10 to 2,000 per night. Most middle aged Americans tend to do $100-300 per night for a seven to fourteen day vacation versus $35-75 per night for people staying months. Violence in Mexico is over emphasized, there are dangerous places and the later at night and your level of alcohol ingestion increases your likelihood of problems, most of these problems are considerably less than a DUI in the USA. For the millions of tourists that travel to Mexico, most problems are from self destructive behavior not from aggression by locals, because it is very bad for business. Drugs, you will be offered drugs a lot if you are under 40. The best response is no thanks.

It actually rains a lot more in Puerto Escondido, than in Tulum. Twice as much. 81 Inches in Puerto Escondido, to 44 inches in Tulum. I don’t know where you get the desert from. It’s a very wet part of México. You probably were there during the dry season. In Puerto Escondido it rains in the summer, in Tulum in the Fall. “PUERTO ESCONDIDO CLIMATE SUMMARY Puerto Escondido is 67m above sea level. The climate is tropical in Puerto Escondido. In winter, there is much less rainfall than in summer. According to Köppen and Geiger, this climate is classified as Aw. The average annual temperature is 25.8 °C | 78.5 °F in Puerto Escondido. The annual rainfall is 2062 mm | 81.2 inch.” “Tulum: Precipitation amounts to 1,120 millimeters (44.1 inches) per year: it is therefore quite abundant. It ranges from 30 mm (1.2 in) in the driest month (March) to 180 mm (7.1 in) in the wettest (October). Here is the average precipitation. On average, there are around 2,525 sunshine hours per year.”

Also loved Acapulco (yeah, really - even surprised me after all the negative press), Mazatlan, Tijuana (yeah, really!!), Mexico City (AWESOME), Puerta Vallarta (especially Sayurita although that was over 10 years ago before it was really trendy like now) and Chetumal (down on the Belize border). Great cost breakdown. I’m wondering if some of the prices were due to COVID. Either way, the difference of cost between the two coasts is astounding! How’s the hiking training coming along? More videos of that coming?

Hi Christianne, I hope you are very well and enjoying your new South American trip. Me and my girlfriend are at the moment in Colombia and are planning a 3-4 months trip to Puerto Escondido but it has been very hard to find accommodation there as the offer from Airbnb seems very limited from December to March. Can you please tell me where can we find good options for us if we are a calm and peaceful couple working remotely (so Internet is important)?

Oh great, wish I saw this before booking 10 weeks at a Airbnb in downtown Tulum! Still looking forward to it tho as I found a place with fast WiFi (I work full time remote) and I'm staying in a local neighborhood so prices should be cheaper

UPDATE: the WiFi in Tulum is great and being 'far' from the beach isn't an issue (my Airbnb provided me with a bicycle). Love Tulum and wish I was staying here longer!!

Wow! It sounds horrible in Tulum these days. I spent a few weeks in Tulum in 2001 and one week in Puerto Escondido. Tulum was great a the time not like Playa del carmen or Cancun. Puerto Escondido was a sleepy surfing beach. I really liked both places but today I would choose Puerto Escondido.

Currently in Tulum ande everyone is complaining about how expensive it is lmao. It's definitely like american prices and if you dont be careful, they really try you and make you pay even MORE. Plus it's kinda not as lit as it could be here, most places in the hotel zone are kinda empty unless it's hella popular w/ a preplanned party. But $100 and up entry free. It's really ridiculous and I'm looking to leave! So thank you :)

You didn't even touch on the Sargazo issue in Tulum; Half the year their beaches are gross and smelly.

Hello, I’ve heard a few people say that the beaches are swim-able in Puerto, is this true? I don’t know how to swim but I like to take a dip and splash around chest height! Lol

I have been to both when I was a digital Nomad. The internet sucks more in puerto. The best spot is at Selinas. They have great internet but of course is not 100% reliable. I prefer Tulum to be honest. But playa del Carmen is even better. The beaches at Tulum are amazing! Heaven on earth. But yeah they have the “tuluminatis” the people that look perfect. Just stay in playa and go to Tulum for day trips (only 45m from playa)
