Hi! I was wondering how hard is this instrument to learn from 0...is it as hard as a violin or any other instrument? how much practice (months, years?) do you need to play the basics? I already play the violin, do you think that could help me? thanks a lot! :)
@carolinaeyckvideos

Hi! I would say it really depends on your musical ear how fast you can learn to play the theremin. If you already play the violin that can help you a lot. I have students who can play a scale after only 2 lessons, for some it takes 2 month. Anyways, I think it is good to have a teacher, if you feel that you are stuck at some point. Let me know, if you need help!

Hi Carolina, I shall be getting a theremin for my birthday in August. My question about them is whether I should opt for the theremini, theremin standard or plus. I don’t need the extended range and will only be using for personal pleasure. Would the theremini be useful as a teaching aid / step prior to getting a standard or plus? Do you still offer lessons? Thank you, in advance.

Hi Carolina, Thank you for your excellent videos! I am a violinist who has built a vacuum tube theremin from schematics. Do the intervals get physically closer together in the higher range on the theremin as they do on the violin? Or is this my imagination because of my stringed instrument experience?
@carolinaeyckvideos

Hi! Yes, the distances between the notes get smaller the higher the pitch. You can widen them by moving your body closer to the antenna when playing higher pitches.

Hi Carolina, I'm a Keyboard player. I've been like maybe 5 years thinking to learn how to play the theremin. I don't know If, as a learner, it is better to buy an ethererwave ash or a theremini. Talking about keyboards I always thought that (if u have the budget) it is is better to practice from the beginning on a good piano/keyboard in order to learn the correct touch and sensation. The theremini looks to me more like a "fun" device and etherwave a more "serious" instrument. Could I know your opinion?
@carolinaeyckvideos

Hi Mauro! I’d recommend the Etherwave over the theremini. They are basically different instruments. Though you can still work your way on a theremini, I wouldn’t recommend it as a first choice to learn the instrument.

Are there also Theremins for people who are left handed or would simply prefer to play it the other way around? I have only seen the ones where the regulation system is facing a person who is playing it the way you do in this video. But what about the people who would play it the other way around? They can't control the buttons if they stand on the other side of the instrument.

Hi, first thanks for sharing your skills in the different brilliant videos. It's a joy to see a player as accomplished as you demonstrating instrument technique and musicianship. I have two questions: 1) Is there any trade off against the gain in range with the add-on module you mention? In other words, what's the effect on the sound, and could there be reasons to prefer the sound of the unmodified instrument? 2) I am a double bass player, and looking at the theremin technique I as you demonstrate it, I was wondering whether (right-handed) people with a background in playing a string instrument and considering the theremin as a second instrument (e.g. me) would not be better off in controlling pitch with their left hand, and articulation/volume with their right hand, as this matches what they are used to on their first instrument. Is it possible to switch sides on a theremin, to play it "left-handed"?
@carolinaeyckvideos
9 жыл бұрын
Hello and sorry for my late answer! So, 1) I don't see a reason you would not want the module installed on your Etherwave Standard theremin. I personally like the sound much better with the module, especially when you are a bass player you will definitely enjoy it. It sounds richer and smoother and you get more notes in the bass register. 2) I get that question a lot and I can't really give you an answer to that, since I've always played the way I do now. I also studied a string instrument and I couldn't see any negative effect on playing the pitch on one instrument with my left hand and on the other with my right hand. I would suggest you simply try out what feels best for you. You can just turn your theremin around for that. If it feels better for you to play the other way around, there are also "left-handed theremins" you can buy.

Lovely, thank you. One question. I have a Standard without Thierry's module, and the distance required to span one octave changes radically with distance from the antenna. Close to the antenna, it can be less than a full-span; closer to the body a hand-span might only yield a fifth. Is the difference in the module, then? Thanks.
@carolinaeyckvideos
9 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes, so this is how the field of a Standard is without the module. You can try to lean forward with your body in the higher register, so the distances between the notes will expand. With the module it will be definitely easier and more linear. Especially in the bass register.

Congratulation on getting an Etherwave Pro! It's a very good instrument. There is a module for the volume circuit. It will give you a much smoother start on the tone. If you want one, you can contact Thierry Frenkel or go to www.ethermagic.eu/modules The Etherwave Pro has a linear pitch field, so you don't need to lean forward with your body to get a linear field (like I described in this video). Let me know, how it is going for you and if you need any advice via skype.

Hi Carolina! Thank you so much for this tutorial, very useful! Just one question: is it mandatory to install the module? Could I get playing skills and a good precision without it as well? Thank you! :)

Hi Edoardo! You can get playing skills without the module, but for my octave playing technique it is much more convenient to have a linear pitch field and you will be able to play more precisely. Without the module you will have 2 or 3 linear octaves on the Etherwave Standard theremin. With the module the whole pitch field will be linear (about 7 octaves).

Hi Carolina! I have successfully installed the espe01 module into my BIG BRIAR Etherwave. The tone and timbre is greatly improved as is the range and the linearity. However, I cannot seem to get a full 2 octaves above middle C while still having a playable range. Let me explain: When properly tuned, the pitch range is now from 3 octaves below middle C to about 1.25 octaves above middle C. I can use the pitch knob to get the higher C, but when I do, the entire field is reduced to only 1 octave and linearity suffers. I am wondering if this is just the nature of the Big Briar? Or, perhaps there is something I can do so that I can get the full range? Thank you SO MUCH for all of your instructional videos and recommendations! Best, Thor

You say the pitch range should be all in front of the body, but if someone like me is big hands and want to play with your octave technique it seems not possible to play the octave till you are in position 5, in my case. I mean Im big hands and if I have the full pitch range in front of me, the distance between pitch antenna and me is too short for playing like you play. I play an octave with 1-5 normally but Id like to play like you do. What do you think about? Thank you and keep playing as nice as you do :)
@carolinaeyckvideos
9 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you for your question! 1. Please check your distance to the instrument. When you stretch your right arm, the wrist should touch the antenna. Don't sit any closer. 2. Tune the theremin so the lowest note is just behind your body. When you lean backwards with your body, you should reach the lowest note. 3. When you play in a high register you need to work with your body and lean forward to expand the field. Try this out and let me know, if it works! Otherwise I'm happy to help via Skype!

@@carolinaeyckvideos you know Carolina as i recall,, some did work well and others did not .i am slowly learning that the theremin is an instrument that requires alot of patience . using a key board amp works well with my theremin and boss ve-20 but my ve-20 will not work with my theremin and PA style amp. but my theremin will work on its own with the PA and built in reverb. the adjustment on all of these devices as well as the theremin seem to be the key in getting a desired sound. the boss ve-20 has fine adjustments on each effect and i am able to get a much cleaner sound out of my standard.more pronounced less muffled .thanks for reminding Carolina ! and look forward to seeing/hearing more of your music.
