It's an OCD thing. COVID had me doing some repainting, ergo removing light switch covers. Putting them back, I turned all the screws vertically. Just a little touch nobody (but me) would notice. It's a difference that doesn't make a difference. I hear you brother, and I also "get" tuning drums to a particular chord. Cymbals too; I'm always amazed when cymbals match the key of the song! Does it need it? Nah. It's the playing that matters anyway.

Rob, that intro just about killed me. I was laughing so hard , I missed the first 2 mins. of the video. I have a D.W. kit and I've never tuned it to the notes on the inside of the shell. I got a new Gretsch USA Custom kit last weekend. No notes on the inside of the shell, just the gray sealer. I've been tuning my drums using the finger in the middle of the head, and tightening the tension rods until the wrinkles are gone. like you show in a previous video. Works great every time. Thanks Rob for all your great videos!!!

The note on the inside of a DW shell is there to tune the resonant head to that note for the best shell resonance. So its not about tuning the note of the drum to the note thats on the inside of the shell.

I'm 39 (not a drummer) bought my 10yr old son a gently used Ludwig element kit & put new batter heads on it & spent days going from video to video getting conflicting info on this subject, downloaded tuning apps & drove myself mad just wanting the kit to b right so it would be good for him to learn on & exciting to play. Found this channel from recommendations on Reddit & within an hour had everything sorted & sounding great, the snare was my biggest hurdle but now it's good just a touch of unwanted ring that a single moongel took care of. If not for this channel I'd still be pulling my hair out & my son wouldn't be enjoying his new kit. 🙏

“Nobody cares!” - My all time favorite reason of them all!! Love it! It is absolutely the truth!! I love the dig on DW too. Having toured the factory and talked to John Good and a few of the folks who build them, the purpose of that stamp is so you know the primary pitch of the drum shell without anything added. You know when your tuning a Tom and you hit that “sweet spot” where the shell just comes alive and sings? You are near that core note and the frequencies are just working better than the rest of the range. That so called “sweet spot” and the core note of the shell are somewhat related. But that’s all there is to it. As you said; there’s a range. And it is absolutely true that nobody cares!! Lol... Keep it focused on rhythm!!

Agree with ya brother. It just doesn’t matter. Early in my playing ‘life’, I tuned to notes for a few years. Man it takes a long time. Then realized that a drum shell has a resonant-sweet spot. THAT is where that thing will sing, regardless of note. (Which can be quite a large range). Make them sound good from one tom to the next, and in turn your kit will sound kick-ass on its own. 🇨🇦👍🏼

I'll agree to disagree that drums are not a melodic instrument. If drums are not a melodic instrument, and are purely rhythmic due to their percussive nature, then answer me this: Is a Marimba, a percussive instrument? Yup. Taught to Drumline and played with mallets. Tympani? Yup. They even have pedal to set the note value / pitch. and lastly, If it isn't melodic, then why so many voices? I can keep rhythm 2 sticks and no drums at all. The drums add VOICES to the percussive instrument. Voice are used for? Melody? 9:04 This is why as for tuning to a 'note', there most certainly IS science to back it up. Everything has a resonant frequency. Toms are no different. Much like a Wine glass to the opera singer, a shell will reverberate simply by means of sympathetic resonance if the frequency of the sound played, is the same as the resting resonant frequency of the wood / shell. Lets say the shell vibrates the most at 145 hz. If we were to tune both heads to resonate at 145Hz, then by striking the drum, both batter and resonant will freely reverberate at the 'pitch' to which we tuned the drum. This is because the physical sound waves are not cancelling each other out. The goal of the bearing edge is to transmit that wave to the shell so it can resonate as well to project the sound. 145Hz is an E. It doesn't matter if the shell is going to resonate naturally at an E, so you disregard it and tune. both heads in concert, but no regard for the shell, means the shell can have cancellation effects on the note. That's why it shoulds like crap in certain ranges of tuning on certain drums. So for the same reason, that if you have a top head and bottom head that are not tuned in harmony to one another, you get that crappy vibrating sound because the heads are working against each other. If one tom is 'flat' in reference to another, then it will sound bad. If you play a chord and stick the wrong note in there, does it sound good? not, because the frequency of the notes work together. A TOM is a chord. Top note, shell and bottom note. Think about it; ) Just my opinion on the matter. It is a rather polarizing topic amongst drummers tho. Appreciate ya! edit: Also, The Professor played DW, on a set made of 1500 year old Bog sunken OAK. Tuned to the note the shell was MADE to resonate at.

100% correct. Especially about the "Nobody Cares". Tune according to what you like to hear, and in the way that's going to get you there the fastest. i recently changed the heads on the church kit last week for service recording. Took me about 20 minutes to remove all 3 old heads, place the new heads, give them a little stretch, and tune them up to my desired pitches. 20 minutes to reskin the entire kit (minus the kick drum. That one is still sounding amazing) and my sound guy, who also happens to do sound semi-professionally and does recordings all the time, said "The drums sound amazing. I can't wait to record them". Tuning drums is not rocket science. Make sure you're getting a clear tone, and simply your 10 inch tom should be a higher pitch than your 12 and 16.

Im glad I listened till the end. this tuning farce goes all the way back to around 1975 give or take a few years, when a drum store salesman advised me to tune my drums in thirds starting with the bass drum at "G". I used a piano to acomplish this task and when I showed up at my next gig, not one other guy in the band noticed any difference in the drum sounds. so # 11 Rob, if you dont tell anybody, they absolutely wont know. lol good video..

I simply love your bullshit-free content and really "sober" way of thinking about drums and music. The first video of yours that I saw a billion years ago was just about tuning the toms. While this is not always working for me in a studio (some sound engineers decide to tune my drums themself to their liking - I have no issues with that), it is working 99% at live gigs when there is little to none time and space to tune any drums, especially some backline drums shared by everyone.

Rob, I love your videos, but I disagree with you on this one. All drums have a fundamental pitch when struck. You, me, and every other drummer are tuning our toms to specific notes. You tune your tom until it sounds good to you, right? You rejected pitches above and below the one you finally chose. The difference is that you don't know what notes they are tuned to and don't care to know. That's fine. But if the pitch really doesn't matter, then try tuning up your 12" tom to be really close in pitch to your 10" and then play a fill and tell me how you like it. It matters. Most drummers are happy to spit-ball it, and others want to be more precise. After I experiment with a new kit, I ultimately arrive at specific pitches for each of my drums that I know sound good, and sound harmonious with one another. Now I don't have to guess every time I put on fresh drum heads.

It’s what divides many drummers from percussionists (leaving aside , marimba , glockespiel and xylophone et al). As you said the tolerance of each drum allows you to find ‘your sound’ whereas the orchestral or ‘line players have to match with either multiple instruments to exactly fit in, or multiple players to match each other; which reinforces their harmony and volume.

The last time I tuned my drums I used his method on placing my palm or a weight(like 2 to 5lbs) in the center of the drum then tuning till all the wrinkles were flat, then I used an Evans Torque Key to make sure all the tention rods were all the same tention, then just becuz I've been using the Tune-Bot for years now I went around the lugs with that to double check to make sure not only were all the tention rods at the same tention but the pitch around the drum were all the same, then tuned it up or down depending on what I was looking for. I do kinda agree with what you're saying Rob, like how in a live setting you're not gonna be able to tell from an audience stand point what note that 10", or 22" or 16" was at, as long as it sounds good to you, feels good in the hand when you strike it, & if you need to dampen it or not, depending on how long or short you want your toms to ring out then throw on an E-Ring, MoonGel, DrumTac, or whatever to shorten the sustain. I will say, I'm gonna have to try just your method Rob to see if I can tune my entire kit with just your method and it sound good to me from both behind the kit and in front of the kit. So keep these drum tutorials and drum hacks coming!! Cheers👍🏼🥁

I wholeheartedly agree that toms need not be tuned to specific notes. I will note that Prince tuned his bass drums to the songs tonic. Not necessary but not unintuitive. I choose to tune my toms especially when recording; my main project now is a mostly "G" operation so I like a "G" low tom and 4th and 5th on the other toms. Totally not necessary but I do feel it can help tighten a mix.

I'm on the other side of this trade... kinda. I don’t really care about the exact notes for the same reasons Rob mensioned in the video. Bozzio's ridiculous! However... don’t discount tuning drums to known values. If you use a Tunebot to tune the top and bottom head to relative frequencies to each other, you can control tone, resonance and decay - and - eliminate unwanted overtones and ringing without using dampeners. 1:1 = long resonance. 1:3 shorter and so on. Since the ratios are relative to each other in thirds, fourths or fifths and not thirds-and-a-quarters or fourths-and-a-eights you do not get annoying overtone ringing. My method allows you buy less expensive drums. I have DW's mid-grade drums with Aquarian single ply coated heads on top (for tone) and Evans hydraulics on the bottom (for control) tuned to the exact same frequency. My DW Performance series kit sounds excellent at half the price.

Reasonable reply and good points. I can see both sides if the argument. I'm going to try both approaches. Rick Beato has a complex video using a tone generator. Beautiful drums and great playing. I do disagree somewhat with what you’re saying. First off, I would say any instrument is melodic in it’s own way. A French horn, a guitar and a piano are all melodic but very different. Whether or not the sound of the Tom rings out for two seconds or just a fraction of a second, it’s still striking a pitch frequency from the initial attack. I think it just comes down to a matter of taste and preference. Once the toms opens up and starts to resonate, there is a variance of notes to be had in there before it starts to be over tightened and choke out. I’ve tried tuning both ways with one being just where the Tom starts to resonate and the other with finding an exact pitch note. It seems like you’re never more than just a quarter turn at most from landing on an exact pitch note… So why not? I have found that once the Tom starts to open and resonate, it’s very easy to find the pitch note of E, Ed, and F’. I experimented with this and I tuned my snare to E, then my 10 inch Tom to A, my 12 inch Tom to E, and my 14 inch Tom to B, with my kick drum at E. When I did this, what I noticed immediately was, that striking two Toms together they sounded very musical and evenly spaced. I pose this question to everyone who reads this… If it’s important to tune a Tom to itself and that all the lugs are evenly tensioned so they produce the same tone at all corners, How much better would the whole kit sound if all the toms were tuned to a corresponding pitch with one another regardless of how long the initial tone lingers ? If drums aren’t musical, then why is it important to find the same pitch at all corners of a Tom with the lugs? Toms can still resonate even if the lugs are unevenly pitched….yet, Everyone strives to get the same pitch tone at every lug.

Of course tunings matter. There's NO argument. These room temp IQ arguments get me everytime...lol. Guaranteed....the sound engineer, who muffled this guy's drums in the studio, did it because he doesn't know how to tune properly.

Man I agree, as an owner of that “nameless brand” I used the stamps as a guideline but you still have to use your ear. My kit sounds great but they’re not tuned to the stamps. I also like what he says about the snare. It’s definitely the most important. I actually changed out my “nameless brand” snare for one the fraction of the price. It sounds amazing!

Ps Rob, I’ve got to quit free loading! I’m gonna buy some t shirts for this summer but unfortunately I’ve got to cut all the sleeves off because I gave up wearing sleeves.

My DWs have the "timbre note" stamped on the inside of each shell. I like the drums just fine, but that timbre foolishness is total gimmickry. Tighten the heads until they sound good. Timbre-schmimber.

I agree. And I play DW's. Drum tuning is about TONES, NOT NOTES.

I 100% agree with you. The only thing that confuses me, is... Why does my set sound so good when they are tuned to set frequencies (220 Hz, 330 Hz) and intervals (4ths, 5ths, etc)? I totally agree with your logic, but for an ordinary person like me, tuning to tensions/pitches with a drum tuner, really does make it generally easier to get a consistent sound...

I always have a clear idea of what toms should sound like compared to eachother based on thousands of records and live shows that I heard and I just tune until I reach those notes.

So, you're telling me all the time I've spent developing the C flat infrared helical signature from my 13" rack tom was in vain? And all I really had to do was relax, have fun experimenting and use a little common sense (with a little guidance from BeatDown)? Joking aside, I did try pitch tuning many years ago and learned quickly that it was not worth the effort. What a pain in the keester for such an insignificant result. Not to mention that I had no clue what notes to even try tuning them to. Thanks for another great vid!

I used to spend HOURS tuning with a Tune-Bot. It would take me half the day, four hours to tune my entire 6 piece kit. With Rob's tuning method I can now get my entire kit done within an hour. It's saved me a lot of time, however I have found that just using the Tune-Bot to fine tune after using Rob's method can still be just as fast, cause all I'm doing at that point is making for sure that all the lugs are at the same pitch/tention to where it sings out one note and not sounding too flat or whatever. Either way, Rob Brown's tuning method is the best and fastest method out there!

If you want a fast way to tune...just get a bluetooth speaker to put on top of the drumhead you're tuning. Choose the pitch you want, and when you get the lugs to that exact note the head will get noticeably louder, as it rings sympathetically with the note. Don't get sucked into this "tuning doesn't matter" nonsense.....of course it matters....regardless of how long the note rings out. Some drums ring out longer than marimba keys....no one would tell you to not tune a marimba key because of the note length...lol. BTW......Rick Beato has a tuning video where he shows the bluetooth speaker method...it's quite interesting.

Awesome video. I don't think tuning to specific notes is Necessary, however I think that tuning the toms to certain Intervals from each other to get a certain type of sound is totally ok.

Mr. Brown, this is the 3rd or 4th video I've seen of yours (1st one was during Covid lockdown when you reviewed "silent" practice heads and cymbals) and your videos always have positive and relative impact on common drum/drumming issues. Thank you sir!

You can't tune a drum! You can tension a drum! If you want musical notes you should probably be playing a glockenspiel! It's refreshing to hear someone talking sense on this matter. THANK You!
