It’s a story as old as the Sun itself. Your telescope was performing well, and you were enjoying your daily solar viewing sessions. But then you felt it. The itch for more- more surface detail, more definition…just more! So you bought yourself a double stack!
Welcome you to the club.
Double stacking can be a nice way to take your existing solar telescope (dedicated or modular) and really push it to its limits. Adding a second etalon to your system can give you the extra power and contrasts in view you are looking for. But wait. You’ve watched our walkthrough on how to tune your telescope in single stack mode, but don’t know how to get going in double stack configuration? We have you covered!
As always, lets start from the beginning- if you have already attached your double stack, take a moment to remove it- let’s start in single stack configuration
Take the time to find a sharp Focus and remove the pressure tuner knob from the primary etalons’ assembly. From there, reseat the PT knob and begin tuning through the range. Keep in mind you can tune physically past the visible brass threads on the PT assembly, and pressure will build as you go. Take your time and find the best tuning position for yourself! Check out that video also here on our channel.
Now that you have your best views, lets get that double stack roaring! From here, move forward with placing the double stack unit into the telescope. Whether front mounted or internal, take a few moments to review proper attaching procedure and connect your double stack to your telescope. Be sure to leave your tuning for the primary etalon as it stands.
Now lets take a look!
Upon initial viewing, you will notice the views will be likely be dimmer; but we promise they will brighten as you come on band through the double stack tuning process. Following the same process as the primary etalon for pressure tuned double stacks, remove the PT knob of your double stack, reseat, and then tune to your best view and adjust as needed. Sometimes going back and adjusting the first etalons tuning after the double stack is tuned can provide better views. Take your time, breath deep, and let the views come to you!
If your double stack is tilt tuned, no resetting is necessary on your double stack- simply get to tuning! Readjusting of the primary etalon may still bring better views, even with a tilt tuned double stack- so give it a try.
