When use of air-cooled turbine blading began, General Electric favored film cooling whereas Pratt & Whitney favored convection & impingement cooling because they use less compressor bleed air, the turbine blades are simpler & cheaper to manufacture, there are no film cooling slots to clog, and the turbine efficiency penalty is lower because the blade cooling air is exhausted parallel to airflow.
