As a Kid, my Dad had I think a 292 I6 in his 64 or so Chevy 3/4 ton Pickup, We had an 8 and a 1/2ft. Over the Cab, Set-in, fully contained Camper in the Bed. The Only time I remember we ever having a problem was during a Camping trip to Yosemite early one Spring. We were going fishing I think. While we were climbing the Tioga Pass on the way to Yosemite in the Early 70's, It popped the Rear freeze plug in the Head. Overheated and Blew the Head Gasket. My Dad pulled off the road aways then He and I took the Head off on the side of the Friggin Highway. I helped as much as I could. Mostly getting him tools. Anyway, We Hitch-hiked to the closest town and Carried the head in to a little Mom and Pop Autoparts place. They re-surfaced it at a Bo-Dunk machine shop in the back and sold us a new freeze plug, Gasket set, Oil and a gallon of coolant. So with the Head, Freeze plug, Gaskets, Oil and a gallon of Antifreeze, We hitch-hiked back to our make shift Campsite on the Side of the road and put the Engine back together. A Bunch people back then stopped and offered to help. Even the Highway Patrol Officer offered to get dirty. But my Dad insisted that he could do it himself. I remember there were Patches of Snow on the ground and everything. We finished after dark that night. I remember him telling me to "Hold the Light Steady" all the time. It was colder than Hell after the Sun went down. He'd Cuss up a Storm if things weren't going well...lol. I also remember He just "Eye-balled" the Torque on the Head as we only had the Crudest of Tools. Basic Wrenches, Pliers, Sockets, hammer, screwdrivers, etc. We ended up resuming our Camping trip the next morning and Never had another problem. I think I was about 8 to 10 years old at the time...lol.

Once it had a C6 behind it with a big tight converter, NP205, Dana 60 and 37” tires…it struggled to make like 330 at the wheels on the chassis dyno….BUT, at 55mph you could stomp it and that big girl(79 F250) would step out sideways. The Ford 300c.i. 4.9L inline six is the best six cylinder engine ever produced. it even makes many V8s run away in fear. it's seven main bearing and it's timing gear instead of a timing chain. make it totally bulletproof. Ford produced a shitload of them, they were in everything from cars, to vans, to pickup trucks, and all the way up to seven ton dump trucks, and it was the engine of choice for all those big brown UPS trucks. and if that's not enough they were used extensively for industrial use..they have been used in all different forms of racing, even drag racing. there used to a company called Clifford Research. and their slogan was 6s for 8s. they had every kind of performance part imaginable for these engines. and they built some incredible 300 sixes. they are still around but they are not near the company they used to be. it's a funny thing Henry Ford didn't believe in six cylinder engines. he just didn't think they were good engines. that was the reason for the Ford flathead V8. it's sort of ironic that his company went on to build the best six cylinder engine ever produced. I have a 1981 Ford F 250 4x4 with a 300c.i. 4.9L six and a four speed. and it's the epitome of the word bulletproof. I added some performance parts to it like a offihouser four barrel intake manifold. and a header. and ported the head, mainly port matched it. which is about all a person can really do. and a 490 lift 240 duration camshaft. and topped it off with a Holly economaster 600 CFM carb. and a three inch exhaust system. I would eventually one day like to try a Holly projection EFI system on it. but as it is it's very dependable and runs really good. very impressive for a six cylinder engine.

This is a TV show. Most likely they have a plan for this chassis which doesn't include cutting up the grill. Putting the intercooler there was a pretty hack attempt, but at least they did include the intercooler so they could run some decent boost. My guess is that the 300/6 videos got so many views when they built the motor they decided to just stick it in whatever they had and put it on the dyno. If that's the case, they were able to get good dyno numbers by placing a fan on the intercooler. They aren't going to be driving this truck on the road anywhere, so the position of the IC doesn't matter to them.

Someone sat there with a straight face and said, "yeah. Put the intercooler directly over the radiator that's already engine temp and lay it flat on itself so it blocks its own airflow."

I watched an Aussie channel, that build and dyno'ed a 225 Slant Six and they got peak turbo power at 5600 but spud it to 6000 RPM's.

I like the old days, gas tank behind the seat, single pot master cylinder, four wheel drum brakes let's put 500 horse into it.

The intercooler is just about worthless now in that position. You had all that room.. you could have easily fit an air to water ice box or just used the air to air properly by placing it so it could get some cool air. You basically have no intercooling at all and possibly more heating than a direct pipe. Of course with that shop fan on it that’s different.

radiator is going to crack over time set up like that the motor rocks back and forth the bracket on the back attached to the engine is going to put pressure on the intercooler
