In this KZitem post the complete decryption procedure of ENIGMA ciphertext messages is shown and explained. A fictitious ENIGMA ciphertext message sent by the German Wehrmacht is chosen as an example. The correctness of the individual statements is proven with the help of a microprocessor-controlled search engine.
This lecture shows how a plain text is obtained from an encrypted ENIGMA ciphertext message and how all settings of the ENIGMA are determined. The complete settings are absolutely necessary to be able to decode all ENIGMA messages in one day like the production on the assembly line.
In order to be able to follow this lecture it is absolutely necessary that one already knows how the ENIGMA encrypts plain texts. Without knowing how a ENIGMA encrypts a plain text, one can never understand how this ciphertext is decrypted again with the decryption method, mainly developed by Alan Turing and Gordon Welchman. However, previous knowledge of the Turing-Welchman bomb is not required.
The complete decryption procedure of ENIGMA messages requires a number of steps. The decoding method used by the British cannot be seen through with a single glance. In January 1941 a delegation of American cryptologists visited Bletchley Park and stayed there for five weeks. After the five-weeks stay, the Americans cryptologists still didn't know exactly and definitively how the British decrypted the ENIGMA ciphertexts. It was many month later that the Americans were initiated into the decryption method by the British, by order of the British goverment. Only after that could the Americams build their Desch bomb. The first Desch bombs were then manufactured in July 1942.
Anyone who believes that what American decryption specialists could not unterstand after five weeks of observation can be described and explained in a short KZitem post has not understood the magnitude of the work in Bletchley Park. I am explaining the procedure here as briefly as possible, and yet the lecture is two hours and forty minutes long.
This KZitem post is not for entertainment at all. This KZitem post is only intended for people who want to know how the decryption method used in Bletchley Park works. This KZitem post has no other meaning.
