Turkey vultures have a 6 ft wing span and a long tail which allow them to glide effortlessly on thermals. On cold mornings they're often seen in trees spreading their wings to absorb sunlight more effectively. I filmed this individual on a dead tree stump some 50 feet up. Fortunately for me, the top of that tree was so small that it required a great deal of balancing to stay on. But by using its wings and tail it was able to hold on while moving around for about 15 minutes. In the small town of Ashaway, Rhode Island, we have a roost of approximately 50 -75 birds that gather here on many occasions. Residents in the area are divided as to their tolerance toward these birds. But all agree that when in flight they are something to behold.
