thought id throw this in here but on Godot 4.3 if you are seeing the background of the subviewport or a black rectangle appear and then disappear for a frame then go to Render Target and set the Update Mode to Always

If you are doing this and end up with with 'black squares' it may be due to the world node in your scene tree interfering with yoru viewport. You can fix this by checking 'own world'.

Awesome love this kind of content. Do you know if using alot viewports has a big performance cost? I'm mostly doing low res 2d games.

Using many different viewports can cost you performance for sure! Honestly, don't worry until you have performance issues, and also measure before triying to optimize.

Is there any performance advantage/disadvantage to doing damage numbers this way compared to simply using an animationplayer with keyframes?

Particles + viewport are definitely more power hungry than just a label + animationplayer. Optimizing too early is a bad idea though. If you really want to see the impact, measure! I'm pretty sure it's going to be fine in most situations

How to set initial and final size?

You can play with the scale property under the particles material. You can for example create a scale curve

@@mrelipteach Just FYI there are some differences in the Viewport setup (class name is Subviewport, some parameters have changed or disappeared, etc)
