Great video. I just bought the 18 tube set plus 6 other individual tubes thanks to your suggestios in the video. I've been away from watercolor painting for 20 years but now that I'm retired it's time to get painting again. I've subscribed but haven't checked out your other videos. I hope to see more tutorials on casual painting on small scale to minature formats is what I'll be working on. Thanks.

Hi Marty, great review and I loved your 'happy daisies'. JMW Turner has to be my favourite artist, his mastery of light and atmosphere is second to none...just love his paintings, especially his 'The Fighting Temeraire'. So much so, I have a rose in my garden that's named after this painting. Thanks again Marty and have a fabulous week :)

+Owings Art Thanks Marty, but I'm afraid I can't take credit for naming the rose. It was bred by an English rose breeder called David Austin. It was just so stunningly beautiful and really matched the colours in Turner's painting that I had to have it :)

All of your reviews have been so helpful in choosing good quality products. I recently purchased the Derwent tinted charcoal which is watersoluble and it isn't the graphitints. They can be smudged or wetted sketched anyways I don't know if you have ever reviewed them. The 24 set for $50 is worth it. I use mine in my Pentalic and Hahnemuhle watercolor sketchers. And it helps break ones in to using a sketchbook. Anyway thank you for your reviews I am a DaVinci fan but have a mixed palette. Newest most awesome favorite color is gold ochre. It is a gorgeous transparent raw sienna. I love it my yellow ochre might even go bye bye. Take care. 🤗

Marty I have really enjoyed watching you do all of these different demos. I have bought a few Turners from Jerry's before. My sentiments pretty well echo yours here. Jerry's house brand, Soho watercolors, I would seriously just stay away from. Jerry's says theyre artist grade, but I got the 24 tube set as a gift and was really disappointed in them. It has been about 3 years ago, but I dont think theyve changed any formulation in them. They use black and white and other strange pigments in them quite frequently too. Needless to say, they make muddy mixes and crack easily in the palette (which was Airtigh). I just wanted to give you a heads up if you were considering reviewing them. They are really more on par with a Cotman, or Grumbacher Academy watercolor, not so much Artists Grade. Thanks again for these demos!

Hi Adam - Where've you been my friend? I miss your comments. Thanks for the heads up on the Soho's. I reviewed their colored pencils and I'd say you're right on about their products. Just not up to par when it comes to quality. Have you ever tried the Shinhan watercolors? A number of subscribers have recommended I review them. ~Marty
@adamw2621

I am putting down wood floors in the house and it has kept me very busy. I have used Shin Han very little. I ordered a couple tubes from Blick just to see. They are ok. I think they use dye bases in several of their colors, which of course fade. But I wasnt blown away by them. I seriously think they are trying to compete directly with Holbein, but I definitely like Holbein better. I have tried several brands but always come back to the reliables (WN, Daniel Smith, Da Vinci, MG, Schminke, etc). One company I do urge you to check out. Kremer Pigments makes a great set of watercolors. They are very granular though, but are great for textures. If you decide to get it, get the Watercolor Set 1 it is called. It is 80 bucks and definitely worth it (14 whole pans and a nice box). I got that set a few years ago for Father's Day, and I still have paint left in it. They are just super super concentrated. If you sub to Teoh (parkablogs) on here he did a review of them. I always look forward to your reviews Marty and hope you continue to do them as you can. Thanks again for all your hard work and your unbiased opinion!

HI Adam - Thanks so much for the tips on ShinHan and the Kremer's, I'll check them out for sure. I just had new hardwood floor put in my kitchen. It's nice, but now I wish I'd matched the original oak in the rest of the house. The kitchen floors are a Brazilian hardwood, which looks great, but isn't period correct for my 1950's house. :-) Good to hear from you and I'll check out Teoh's review. ~Marty

Awesome video Marty!!! 😆 July so you know, Turner sets are sold on Jerry's website. This weekend is different than Veterans Day and I just wanted to put that out there. People seem to confuse this. P.S. Before I get jumped on by anyone...lol. I/We honor ALL service members we have lost this Memorial Day weekend. My above comment "brothers in arms" is directed only in regards to those specifically my husband, dad, and grandfather lost.

Leslie Gulyas Honestly, Leslie, buying tubes is by far the most economical way to go! I'm not sure about Marie paints as I haven't used them. If you like watercolor paints you can try Daniel Smith or Schmincke. The brushes that hold water the best are not always cheap. I use a mop brush made in France, but you might be able to pick up a synthetic brush for cheaper. Best of luck.

Hi Marty, I really enjoy your channel and reviews. Thank you so much for sharing with us all. I am hoping you will see this question eventho this video is several months old. I am about to "step up" from my Van Gogh watercolors to higher quality paints. Which do you feel is better, Turners or Lukas 1862? And which is a bigger change from the Van Goghs? If that question makes any sense at all. Thanks ~Annie
@owingsart
7 жыл бұрын
Your question makes perfect sense Annie. Turner was good, but I think the Lukas are slightly better in my opinion. Both are good quality, but again the Lukas have a slight edge. You may notice some slight variation in transparency among the colors, but I just add or subtract the amount of water I use to compensate. If you really want to make a leap, you might consider Daniel Smith or Schmincke. Daniel Smith are outstanding and affordable. Schmincke are probably the best watercolors on the market, but NOT cheap. Anyway, I hope this helps and please do let me know what you deicide and how it works out for you!!! All the best ~Marty

Roden70, I'm not sure where you're located, but AC Moore in the US has Strathmore "Skills" watercolor pads perpetually on sale for around $6. It's marketed as "Paper for Practice" and is a decent 140lb/300 g/m paper for just messing around, warming up, etc. 30 pages per pad. It won't take scrubbing (pills like crazy), but I keep at least a couple pads around for when I want to play with colors or test new paints. I have good paper for actual painting projects, but this stuff is great for giving yourself permission to just goof around with your paints. Also, one of the best pieces of advice on art I've ever seen is "Paint like you're a millionaire." Don't stress about wasting paint or paper. It's very freeing to give yourself permission to play.

You can find these on jerrys artarama, infact I think they boasted the company as a "Jerry's Exclusive" so I was under the impression it was like Lukas being a store endorsed brand. www.jerrysartarama.com/turner-concentrated-artists-watercolors So aside f rom amazon people could order these here I think.Always enjoy seeing paint set down to paper. Perhaps it's like the age old habit of a fisherman looking through their tackle box (Which I am, and I do haha) I suppose it's a need to be around the stuff you love.I've been wondering, I know you have a lot of requests to go through, but I'd love to eventually see a review of "Maimeriblu Superior Watercolor" line. I haven't seen much information on them at all aside from the paints being listed on handprint. My impression so far is that they have a moderate amount of brightener (Which most people might automatically assume is bad, but the brightener to a certain point increases the chroma of pigments in the paint, even though it may lower the value range) So they might also be slightly more opaque due to this, but in a lot of their paints the analysis seems to be that they're the most chromatic (Or brightest) among others brands the same pigment. It is more of an artist preference though, if you prefer deeper value and less chroma for your work you might look elsewhere. I'm planning on going for the maimeriblu on a couple of paints, specifically PG7 Phthalo green (Their line calls it Cupric Green light) & PB16 Phthalo Turrquoise (Their line calls it turquoise Green). As the description of them from handprint is that they're the most chromatic options among those reviewed there. Phthalo turquoise is also an interesting pigment to have at a higher chroma as it's the darkest and least chromatic of the phthalocyanines.. In any case! It would be great to see them lain down on paper and evaluated by you, if you have the time down the line I'd certinaly appreciate it. Especially with how scarce they seem to be on reviews, or any kind of promotion actually.All that aside! Wonderful review as usual. I always look forward to new reviews on your channel. Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for the review Marty! I know you are as obsessed with Watercolour and aqua pencils etc as I am so I thought of you when I came across some very unusual paints yesterday of which there is only one review of on youtube! They are the ShinHan pass hybrid colour paints. They are a gouache/watercolour hybrid, that can work like watercolours or gouache. KZitem Review is interesting, you can read up more here about them www.shinhanart.com/eng/product/product_hybrid.php

Hi Marty, i loved listening to your thoughts about daisies. They really are small happy flowers. And they also taste very well! Your collection of watercolour paints reviews is growing more and more! It's becoming clear to me that i prefer brands which offer great transparency. Right now i'm exploring different watercolour artists as well as movies about famous painters and there is also a movie about William Turner: kzitem.info/news/bejne/r6V9voNmsKJjoqw . I haven't watched it yet but it seems to be a great movie. Greetings from rainy Germany!

Hi Anja - Thank you my friend, it's always great to hear from you. The Turner movie is interesting. I watched most of it and the Turner character was very well played. English period films almost always make me sleepy for some reason. :-) Anyway, I hope you have a fantastic week Anja. Perhaps the sun will shine soon in Dusseldorf. :-)

I think people should stop slapping turners name onto their paint when there is no resemblance. People these days are superficial, everything in society is superficial. I think we have lost true spiritual and artistic quality. And God.
