fun fact: the reason why vampires traditionally can’t be seen in mirrors is because when vampire legends and stories started being written and became popular, mirrors were still being made by silvering. the silver is what would cause them to not have a reflection. so, technically, vampires would have a reflection in modern mirrors because they aren’t made of silver

For those who don't know, this is basically the tollen's test (or the silver mirror test) and it is used to differentiate aldehydes from ketones. Carbohydrates contains an aldehyde group so it reacted with the solution to give the silver precipitate, which settled down on the bottom of the glass and makes the glass act like a mirror.

This method was also used to reflectorize astronomical telescope mirrors from its introduction in 1882 until vacuum deposition (usually of aluminum) replaced it for commercial used in the 1960s (though amateur telescope makers continued to chemically silver into the 1980s due to the convenience of not needing to ship a polished and figured mirror in a way that would prevent damage). The main advantage of silver over aluminum coating is that silver is more reflective when new and is fairly easily applied by a careful amateur; the main disadvantage is that in today's world, the silver tarnishes and must be stripped (with nitric acid) and recoated every couple years. There's also the slight concern that if one attempts to keep the alkaline ammoniacal silver nitrate solution, it can explode...
