Your turning is beautiful! There are a few details people might need to know about if planning to try to make one: front, or first surface mirror is used (not what's used in a bathroom, for example), magnifying lenses (especially if less than 6" long), and specifically measured mirrors for a precise image. Most common mirror systems use either 2, 3, or 4 mirrors. Yes, I make scopes and have for about 20 years - I love it!

Hello Laura! I saw your comment and hope you do not mind my question. I want to make a high-end kaleidoscope for my wife but do not want to use turning kits. Where would I buy quality parts to make one? (*I'm a turner) Thx

What did you do to stop the chunk with the color pieces. From falling off

It was glued in place with CA glue. Thanks for watching!

Great design! When I made kaleidoscopes, I used small clear round plastic boxes to hold the color beads / glass chips instead of cutting lens for that part of the kaleidoscope. I would put the glass into the boxes, then carefully fill the box with mineral oil then use CA glue along the top Edge of the box to hermetically seal it. Care must be taken to not allow glue to come into contact with surfaces that have any mineral oil on them. Otherwise the box will not seal. The mineral oil dampens the sound of jewels or pieces of glass inside the box. Before assembling, take plastic box and turn upside down and place on paper towels to ensure it does not leak for at least 24 hours. If the box leaks, you’ll have to start over. Once you have successfully completed this part of kaleidoscope, you will have a very high quality product that is quiet while turning the end of it.

Lol how funny. I just made this Kiwico kit with my son and had the idea to make this out of wood too. So I came to see if anyone else had some good videos of it and it looks like you had literally the same journey. I don’t have a lathe so my planned construction is a bit different... great build!

Hey! At 10:30, you said "... so lets start gluing this up." You forgot to say "Go ahead" - (let's _go ahead_ and start gluing this up). You didn't miss it on any other action. It's a nice construction video, though. Thanks for posting it. If I had a lathe, I'd definitely copy your design.

Your so smooth with your turning . I sold my lathe I had some cheap HSS tools and didn’t know how to sharpen them well and they would bite. I have to ask. Are the carbide tools easier to use?

Thanks so much. I think the learning curve is much easier with carbide tools. On the other side, traditional tools remove material faster and you can get a smoother cut (if they’re sharp). That’s why I like to use both. 😁
