Very neat car. Nice condition. I hope the motor turns out ok for you. Inside didn't look all that bad. You should aspire to be an engine rebuilder. I think this one would be a great first one to do.

My limo had a chatty top end when I first fired it, but after running for about 10 minutes it quieted up. I would definitely send a camera into the cylinders, put fresh oil in it, and run the valve lash and try it again. I would do as much self diagnosing as possible before pulling it and sending it off. It looks to me like the previous owner just pressure washed it and gave it a marketplace makeover.

It may have been rebuilt. I think it would look much more sludgey if it was not. You are right your engine guy can probably pull a cylinder head off and tell.

As a professional mechanic I would say it was Craig’s list rebuild, but without seeing I bin person it’s hard to tell. I wish you well with it. The noise and the crunch could simply be from sitting and once you get it running or rebuilt it would go away

hey at least it's easy to pull with the front end off. Maybe try turning it with the valve covers off and see if all the valves are moving. Don't like the look of the rust on the valve train but i know some places rust easier/ faster than others with the weather and humidity. It's definitely worth a motor rebuild, going to be a sweet ride when it's done.

did you check so there was no stuck valves, it is pretty common on an engine that has been sitting for a while even if it actually was rebuilt that engine looks fairly clean inside so it might not have many miles since a rebuilt. the rust is probably just because it has been sitting unused

Considering the age, oils from the day and typical use of a hearse, that engine was apart and thoroughly cleaned. There would be sludge and deposits in the head. Unfortunately, without being taken back apart, it's impossible to tell what was replaced, refurbished, machined, etc. It's clear it was not stored in a dry environment, so the external rust on the valvetrain, is likely on the camshaft, rods, and crank. I've even seen corrosion work it's was into the bearing surfaces. Definitely pull it and send it to a engine specialist. The only other choice would be the use of a good borescope tool to look through the plug holes and drain back holes. Good luck!

Nice coach! Have a coupe hearses , the 61 S&S Victoria end loader I removed the 390 and turbohydramatic trans and swapped in a 60 over 500 with short shaft TH400 trans, never liked reverse where first should be.

@atribecalledcookies4 there’s ZERO rust it’s always been a California car there’s never even been any rust repairs because it’s never had any…. The floors still look BRAND new. Needs a lot of TLC, but what's there is pretty solid. I'm thinking that the engine should get a thorough looking-over before deciding whether to replace or to rebuild. Originality counts..... Since this one is a '60 and a 3-way straight hearse, not a combination, AND it's limousine-style it more or less hits the rare "trifecta of desirability". Restore it to stock, insure it appropriately, and it might make ya some bux getting rented to funeral homes and/or livery companies. There's been a trend towards the higher-end funeral homes offering vintage coaches (no doubt at a premium) as a ceremonial option.

For the age of the motor it's extremely clean . I would say as clean as it is and the amount of rust on the rocker assembly it's been rebuild and then sat for a number of years
