Really nice! You mention 92mm square and can be stacked. One of the layers could therefore be a 92mm fan on low rpm for great and silent cooling potential. Lovely work, as always.

I didn't remember that 92mm is a fan size, I first thought about 80mm fan and enclosure for it, but that isn't necessary :)
@ArtemisKitty
4 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I thought of! Drop one of those underneath it in that nice open bottom area, protecting it from intrusion (with one of those good old fashioned 92mm wire fan grilles) along with creating a nice airflow through the case. Might want to open the air holes on the old a bit wider as well, though. Alternatively, top-mounting the fan would give you a nice chance to use an RGB fan if you like. Have the color indicate network status, cpu temp, something like that, so that it’s visible from a distance instantly if something fails. (I mean... they’re typically just ws2812b LEDs in the fans anyway, so the gpio pins would work great for that, along with pwm speed control to keep the temps AND the noise down.) On second thought, a “ring” style LED fan pulling air down through the case rather than pushing would give a nice central “light belt” effect in the middle.

The stacking design is brilliant! I've just started out with my Pi 4 8gb model running Ubuntu 20.04 and it drives me nuts. My Pi 2 running Void works better, not sure how that's even possible. I want to host my own mail server, a static website and a Matrix Synapse server for starters. The software side of the Pi on aarch64 really needs some work. The Pi 4 with a small Pi 3 radiator gets really hot without active cooling, going even to the USB and Ethernet ports, so I'll have to see what I can do about that without going too big (currently caseless, running on the box that it came in, since all metal radiator cases were out of stock everywhere i looked).

@MrBiky

@@igorpecovnik Not sure about "broken," however I agree there are better alternatives for storage, like the RockPi which comes with eMMC and with an m.2 nvme port (and not an easily breakable micro-HDMI, but a full sized HDMI). There are also other boards with 1 sata port on them, but the Raspberry Pi does a good enough job as it is. I just bought a m.2 nvme to USB 3.1 case, I just need a Type C to Type A usb cable and a distro that won't make me pull my hair off, like Ubuntu currently does. Void is still some way from being ready (although I may try Void mklive with the latest Pi 4 stuff, just to test and learn stuff), but I may go with Arch or Manjaro ARM for the time being (although I have my beef with both of them, those haven't annoyed me as much). I still have Ubuntu on my Pi 4 2GB, just because I won't be touching it at all.
@igorpecovnik

@@MrBiky What you think about is irrelevant since this is science and is something that can be proved. Any you already see symptoms which you mistakenly hooking to software. All distros will have this problems so my free advice to you is to not waste time with Manjaro and similar. Its not your fault ... USB storage has that kind of problems. Everywhere. Not just on toys like Rpi. That's the core of the problem. If you want reliable thing, throw Rpi into the trash.
@MrBiky
4 жыл бұрын
@@igorpecovnik >If you want reliable thing, throw Rpi into the trash. Reliable for what? Serving websites? Serving large files or databases? Using as a desktop? Or reliable hardware? What did you mean by this? My experience with the Pi 2 and Void on an SD card was great for the level of performance the hardware has. Additionally, I have not mentioned any symptoms or issues I had in my short experience with the Pi 4 and Ubuntu 20.04. Did you just read my mind to see what my issues were (software or hardware)? And you mentioned the word "science," but in relation to what? USB storage? I really don't get your point.
@igorpecovnik
4 жыл бұрын
@Biky Reliable for personal site? Yes. Business site? No. Desktop on a HW without any proper storage? "level of performance". ARM boards are designed for specific use case. RPi is good for driving cameras, attaching displays, overall playing for users is less painful ... but you have to understand where the limits are ... or you will be ranting until they will give out new RPi which you will buy, because "you" can't resist their marketing. That one will probably not have those issues, but still will have others. Reliability is like security. If you want to understand it, don't ask random people on the internet. Read books and articles, study. Nobody can give you proper answer in a quick YT comment. Yes, RPI can do everything you are mentioning - thanks to greater Linux community - but it some use cases performs so so, somewhere is nice and in some cases at not acceptable levels. For NAS use case is very bad choice, but there will be lots of amateurs (hw is at made for them) out there praising how good this is. If you find a good word advocating Rpi means you have no clue (or just not know enough) or you don't think much. Its a consumer grade product.

Nothing against a DIY case for the Pi but if you don't need the SDD then the Argon ONE case for the Pi4 does all of this. Only positive I'd see from this vs that case is that it's super minimalistic. The Argon case is very aesthetically pleasing for that desktop PC look so it draws the eye to it more that a plain black box.

Having a "power" node that sits at the top/bottom of the stack and takes in 5/12v DC and then runs it through 2 vertical bus bars that are exposed at the top and bottom of the corners of the node. Stacked nodes have the same bus bars running through them with 'taps' to power the Pi in the node. Stacking would have to be like cans of food...as in they are loosely 'locked' in place to maintain a good connection. Another option is to have slightly protruding bus bars that depress on springs (of the lower node) to maintain contact (and prevent slipping)...but that is more work :)

Stacking will be an issue. The air flow will want to go the path of least resistance and your fans will not be able to move as much air as you would like. However, if you have the fans blow across the board, you could get good air flow that way. Best thing to look at would most likely be heat pipes.

I would encourage everyone to look at the Argon40 case for inspiration. The price point is a bit steep at $40 USD, and it does have the potential to stack, however its custom pcb and thermal design appear (to a relative non expert) to be outstanding for this kind of work

Amazing video! What software do you use to create videos / PCBs? You are keeping a consistent and very cool style.

I've been thinking about something similar in means of stacking Pi's modular on top of each other. Though I've thought that there would be on more space for something like maybe 80mm fan to push quietly air through the assembly or have moderate passive enclosure temps with more space. Anyway I really like that ports are at the one side. I've always wondered that why pi's even where originally designed to have ports everywhere.
