This adult male Turquoise Parrot [Neophema pulchella] was filmed in the early morning as it perched scanning the area before flying to an exposed branch near a small flowering eucalypt.
Turquoise Parrots are small (average size 21cm), brightly coloured, endemic Australian parrots, just slightly larger than the well known Budgerigar [Melopsittacus undulates] (average size 18cm). The distinctive plumage of the Turquoise Parrot is predominantly yellow underneath [orange bellies in some older birds], and the upperparts are green with a brilliant turquoise blue crown and face. The blue outer edges of the wings are turquoise shading to a deep blue. Only the mature males have red shoulder patches. The females and juveniles generally appear paler and have green throat plumage.
Turquoise Parrots normally forage on the ground near woodlands, feeding mainly on seeds from grasses and shrubs.
