Timothy Haun Thank you. My personal rule is that if the turtle is smaller than the lid of a five gallon bucket I release them to swim another day. Thanks for watching.

Good rule, that's how we keep the population strong. I totally agree that snapping turtle is an unused resource

+Larry Reece I bought my Quarles turtle trap from Newt Sterling at snareone.com/turtle.html. It's expensive, but It is a great quality, American made trap. Mine is many years old and I have never had a single problem or repair needed.

i liked this video very much. it's been some time (i think it was in the late 60's or early 70's) sense i last eat turtle. this is also my first video of yours i seen. new subscriber, ding ding ding... so if you don't mind, i'm going to ask. do you make cooking video's too. sometimes it's how you cook them, that makes the difference between tossing the meat and preparing the meat for storage...or eating right then because some meat just doesn't store well, like blue fish. if you ever eaten the fish fresh or put it in cold storage then eaten it. there's a big "ol" difference.

Thanks for the kind words and for subbing! I do make a few cooking videos. I've done one on cooking beaver backstraps here: Cooking Beaver Backstraps and one on general tips on cooking wild game here: Wild Game Cooking for Dummies. as far as turtles go, I'm planning on another video on trapping locations and catches, and then a video on butchering and cooking. You are right about some meat not keeping well. Some fish are like that. I have yet to get a grennel to the table before it turns to cotton. Have a good day sir!

Birds. They float and are easily seen by a turtle sitting on the bottom. Sparrows can legally be hunted year round just about everywhere in the US. Walk around a farm with a shotgun and you can have enough bait in no time.

It is now completely illegal to trap any turtles in New Jersey. Even though I have seen 45 lb snappers in my area. There all over the place.

It is not illegal to trap snapping turtles in New Jersey. Limit for a licensed fisherman is 1 per day in season. Very limited commercial snapping turtle permits.

@@ericspace7583 that's the thing Eric only 2 people still have permits to catch turtles in NJ. Once those 2 guys are dead, that's it. I went thru the trapping course 2 yrs ago and that's what the instructors told us.

What is the difference between killing a fish for food and a turtle? Who gets to decide which animal can be killed and eaten? You? Seriously Cheyanne, the simple fact is you do not get to decide what other people eat. You Do get to choose what you eat or do not eat, but you have no right to control others. I do not try to control you, I do now want to control you - yet you seem to want to have authority over me and you want to dictate what I am allowed to eat. That is not fair. You need to be fair. If you do not want to eat turtle - I respect that. But I do want to eat it and you do not get to control what another person eats.
