Exactly, these can make it through WWII but suddenly catch on fire when there are no more spaces for development. I'd be investigating the shit out of this if I was OC Fire.

I hate to see this...I remember one of those when I was a kid at Moffet Field Naval Air Station by San Jose California where my dad was stationed...would always ask if he would drive by it when we were on base...went to a science fair there a few times in the early to mud 80s...to a kid it was just enormous and magical

Those hangers where still around? Don't remember the last time I noticed them from the I5 freeway since Irvine started to get built up. The Marines that used Tustin and El Toro airbases are now at Camp Pendleton and MCAS Miramar in San Diego.

One of the largest wooden structures on the planet. How tragic. Let’s put up the nicest 17,500 capacity amphitheater because Irvine doesn’t want it anymore. We could name it the Tustin Hanger Amphitheater! Keep headline artists stopping in Orange County so we don’t have to drive to LA or San Diego! Hey Tustin, call Livenation!!!

@alancranford3398

@@StarrydrawsThanks. I'm sad that it's gone. Decades of neglect led to a firetrap--and there was the chance that the entire structure would collapse due to wood rot. I've seen it rain inside the hangars on a bright sunny day--the hangars were so large that they had weather patterns! This could have been the ignition source--spontaneous combustion. I'll have to keep tabs on Hangar One in the future after the fire department figures out the cause of that fire. It takes money to maintain buildings of any size. Those hangars are the size of mountains and would have taken a mountain of money to maintain. Even from I-5 the neglect was obvious--because there was no money.

The hangar was something to see when traveling along I-5. A few weeks ago, there was a PBS replay of a program call California Gold. Back in the late 90s, I believe, Huell Howser hosted it and did a 30 minute story of the the hangar and the few remaining buildings nearby. That hangar was huge inside. I'm sorry to see it burnt down. Quite frankly, I had the feeling that it wasn't going to be "if" but "when" it would cease to exist.
