I've been sewing for 60+ years and would like to say I think this is a beautifully made, clear, and easy to understand method for a lapped application. It will make anyone who is leary of sewing zippers comfortable sewing them now. Not everyone is as good as you are with a well-designed tutorial. I enjoyed it! But I'm wondering; I always was taught never to sew a zipper one-side down and the other side up; it was always both sides in the same direction. As a professional, what's you're opinion on this please? Do you believe it makes that much of a difference? I was also thinking that not everyone has modern machine (Pfaff?) with such a sophisticated zipper foot. I don't use a Pfaff, but I do have a very modern machine and several different types of zipper feet. Some people have only the older style slide left-to-right and vice-versa type. As I have a student who is currently quite anxious about zippers and using the old style foot, (all she has with her older machine) would you consider helping me out with a good way to advise her? I can teach, but I don't have the sort of talent you have for clear explanations and demonstrations. I'd be most grateful. I'm not asking for a rework of this tutorial, just any suggestions you're willing to provide. Thank you!

SG - Thanks for your comments and feedback. Depending on how stable the fabric is, sometimes you can get away with sewing down one side and up the other - like in this example where I used a very stable cotton. But if it was a knit, or a loosely woven fabric, I would likely sew directionally - both going from top to bottom or bottom to top. As far as needing a zipper foot, you have to have a foot with a very narrow toe in order to stitch relatively close to the zipper. So even if it's an older model machine, the toe nearest the zipper teeth needs to be quite narrow.

@@surefitdesigns - Thanks again - for both your opinion and the advice about presser feel. I'm going to go net-surfing for a very narrow foot that may work with her machine. It's a vintage Kenmore and there seems to be alot of parts and accessories available for Kenmores.

Liked the tape application. Maybe I can sew my zipper in straight now. Thanks for the info.

I am making a sling bag and the pattern has exposed zipper. I was wondering if I could substitute a lapped zipper? How would that look? I would need to add a little to the zipper seam.

I think it's a great option if you don't want an exposed zipper. Give it a try!

I really learnt something here. When I learnt to sew a zipper like this in 1963 at school we didn’t do the 1/8th fold back and of course machines in those days didn’t have needles that could be moved sideways either. Really useful tips thanks Glenda.
