This is a wonderful demonstration, you explained so much cool stuff about fretwork. Most tutorials just show you how to do frets on a new guitar. Because of the difference in the radius of the frets and the fingerboard, the binding nibs and the sandpaper under the nut, I learned so much, thanks Ben! By the by, the end shot video showed the two different radii, it was great!

Using sandpaper for shimming the nut makes sense, since sand doesn't give in. However my logical thinking says the grains might sink into the wood, leaving just the thickness of the paper which is soft and may go thinner under pressure. At least the paper might kill the sonic vibrations, I might think. I once had a local luthier do some adjusting while fixing a broken neck. He used aluminium stripes of beer cans for shimming, adding some super glue between layers. According to him it is the optimal material. Easy to acquire and work with, evenly thick, solid yet lightweight, acoustically neutral etc. Adding a sheet of metal made sense to me at least with the brass nut I have on that guitar. Supposedly bone and aluminium work equally well together. What do you think?

I have a tip to make using the soldering iron easier: buy a flat tip for the iron (the flat screwdriver shape), then take a small round jeweler's rattail file and file a notch into the end. The notch helps keep the soldering iron centered on the fret and there's a bit less chance of you skidding off into the fretboard (or worse, lacquer or binding!) I also use a small bit of solder on the tip of the iron too, it really helps transfer heat to the frets and they'll come out fast!
@Glen694u

I have read a couple articles on fretting that suggest using a round file to make a shallow groove in the tip of the soldering iron, which helps give some stability while running it along the fret. Also, read another article once that offered if you want to keep the binding nibs you can melt some binding with acetone and put a tiny blob at the frets which you can then shape to the fret. I've never tried the binding trick, but in theory it seems like it would work

I think at that point (13:00) the proper course of action would be to contact the client and explain the situation to him and see what he would prefer. If it was my guitar, id rather it get returned to its factory spec. Its possible that over the years of playing it, he gradually got used to the way it played as the state if the frets deteriorated.
@Beezner122
5 жыл бұрын
I was coming here to comment the same thing. Adjusting the radius of the fretboard to match frets that have been worked multiple times already seems like a really bad idea. As you said, Kelly likely gradually adjusted his playing to match the wear. I would also want it back to as-new. I'm not a luthier, but personally, it seems odd to measure the string heights only to re-fret it and set it up as it is CURRENTLY. The wear is only going to be compounded as time goes on and will eventually be unplayable. Back to factory seems like the more logical choice.
@danieldean8953
5 жыл бұрын
Exactly! He adapted his playing over time to a guitar that had been gradually modified over a long period of time. He may actually prefer greatly for the guitar to play as it did when it was new.
@Beezner122
5 жыл бұрын
Aaaaand...It's obviously only going to continue to wear from this point as well. Right now he has new, unworn frets on a modified fretboard that will only become worse over time. Restoring to as-new would be the best thing at this point, from my perspective.

I think the rest of the commenters here are a bit in the weeds. Players who are actually playing for money often don't care too much what the factory says or what the factory spec was. If you take an 8" radius guitar and hand it back to someone at 12", they may not favor you too much. If they want a flatter radius in the future, it won't be hard to have.

One tip on an SG, put something under the neck / body joint as well when working on the neck ( as it is on the neck rest, all the strain is on the body joint at the moment ). They are notoriusly weak at this point, and if something were to press on the neck or fall on it, you can easily break the neck joint !
@Beezner122
5 жыл бұрын
Each time I saw it I was surprised he didn't provide support under there. It's resting near the nut and the far end of the body? Nearly the longest possible span, providing almost maximum possible deflection at the neck joint. I know close to NOTHING of working on guitars, but that seems a very obvious no-no. Even if I'm wrong, doesn't it at least "feel" like there should be support at the neck joint?

I felt I learned something about fret pulling. let me return the favor perhaps. Power is measured in watts and in principle(with AC current it gets much more complicated than that) is the multiplication of voltage times the current. Given that we use a power grid with fixed voltages this means the higher the watts the more current that is running. The higher the current, the more heat the wire that runs it generates, given that the girth is the same. Also if you notice the cord of higher wattage equipment tends to be thicker to avoid heating up.

Hi and thanks for all these videos and sharing your knowledge. I would like to ask something. When you intend to do a refret: after you remove the strings the tension on the neck will change and the neck will bend backwards right?, then when you do refret and level the frets all this will be done when the neck has wrong tension right? And then when you attach the strings and apply new force the neck will move forwards again. Will this not cause the frets to be levelled wrong? What is the solution for that? Do you then remove the strings and do a quick levelling again? how do you overcome this? Please share an answer because I am about to start a refret following your videos :).

I've got a '97 Les Paul Special with rolled binding/nibs on the frets. It does run out of fret pretty easy with the high E string. I think that is more a spacing problem then a problem with the binding itself. It's just too close, but really it never happens while playing and maybe that's because I'm used to it. I have a '18 SG Special with no neck binding. The leveling job is perfect (robot!), but the fret ends all stick out. I had to file them myself - on a 1200$ guitar. (it also came with other problems like broken tuners, but that's another story) If I had my way I'd take the rolled binding nibs on every guitar. It's so much nicer to feel while playing - as long as the strings are not too close to the edges to fall off the fret ends. The 2019 SG special now comes with dot inlays and old school rolled binding. I dream about that guitar nightly, but I don't want to displace my '18 SG so soon.

Besides the frets being worn, the fact that the radius is smaller on the frets than the fret board is a big reason for him falling off the neck when playing. Simple solution. Just do a normal re-fret and leveling and everyone's happy.

Hey Ben, Since using heat helps a lot for removing the frets... there are some guitars that have carbin fiber or phenolic (like Gibson's Richlite) fretboards. Those materials are designed to be neutral to temperature changes. This helps a touring musician who is going from one climate zone to another, because nobody jumps onstage with frets popping out the side of the fretboard, but how about refretting such fretboards ? Sure heating the fret up will loosen glue if there is any, but the fretboard won't shrink to make it easier to pull the fret out. Is that problematic ?

30 watts is about average for what you will get for cheap in a store. 60 Watts is what i like for guitar work. But the best thing would be to get something like a 100 watt, with the ability to adjust temperature

Birki gts Before worrying about the power rating, it looks like a new soldering iron (or at least a new tip) may be needed here, Ben!! The only clear part of the iron is the very end of the tip! And as for the bend...how do you know when you're heating up the right part?!?! Incidentally, it is good to hear the word SOLDER pronounced correctly, without the 'silent L' that our friends across the pond use!!

Phil Gallagher Yeah, i was making my recommendations for people who don't already have an iron so they know what to get. Obviously like any other tool you need to take care of your soldering iron.
