My update: Hi Ethan, I already studied the first chorus and could analyse the tricks. I made some notes for that which is helpful. A pleasure! Today I started with the second chorus . I will spend some time for practicing both of them. Thanks.

Excellent to hear. Will be curious to know whether there is much difficulty to the 2nd chorus.

I wonder, why the style is called "low down". Great tutorial again.

Again, a great tutorial on Blues Piano. Thank you so much Ethan. Wouldn't you mind droping a line on why this style is called "Low Down".

We call this early urban blues piano style "low down" because of the plodding quarter note pulse in the left hand, its relative sparseness (harmonically and melodically). Also because it evokes an unsophisticated "down in the alley" spirit and has an overall earthy and unpretentious character. We say "low down" to differentiate this sound and groove from other types of piano blues of the time. For instance, you could call some blues "ragtime blues" because of its oom-pah rhythms, or others "boogie-woogie" , because the 8-to-the-bar and rolling rhythms. You also want to differentiate this style from the more sophisticated players of the day, who's blues would employ more jazz colorations and advanced technique. Players like james p johnson, jelly roll morton, or clarence williams, for instance, would not be considered low down. Hope this helps! Sorry for the delayed response!

@@EthanLeinwand Thank you very much, Ethan, for this explanation. I am going to print this in a few minutes and store it with my sheets of blues and boogie-woogie. Thanks again. Greetings from Germany, Heinz

Hi Ethan! If I remember correctly, weren't or aren't you in Miss Jubilee and the Humdingers? I think that was the first time I saw you at the Focal Point some years ago. Anyway, great exercise and lesson! I need to develop left hand independence and this is a great way to do it. Within about a minute I was playing a rudimentary St. Louis Blues using exactly the same playing pattern. I'm keeping up with your lessons.

Glad to hear you're getting something out of the tutorials! Thanks for commenting. Yes, I indeed do play with Miss Jubilee, though the Humdingers moniker is from before my time. These days we go by Miss Jubilee and the Yas Yas Boys! We're sure looking forward to getting back to gigging this summer!

Hello Ethan, I now can play the second chorus, too. By spending ample time to the call and response first in a relaxed way, and then with both hands. I had not too much difficulty because you explained it clearly . So, I’m gonna practice the two choruses further. After that, it’s time for me to do the possible improvisation. Thanks!

Great!! And if you're looking to challenge yourself further, try to see if you can learn the 2nd chorus that I play on the demonstration video. You'll have to slow it down, but you should be able to figure it out.

Hi Ethan, I could figure out the first 2 improvisations in the video, ( 21 sec.) Also, by pausing the video every time. By doing it piece by piece, it is not only possible, but also it gives flavour to my playing! I will further practice and figure out the next improvisations. Thanks!
