I've always loved the look of a Christmas/Thanksgiving cactus especially ones that people have been growing for years. When I saw one at the store this year I decided I needed some flowers to make 2020 a little less terrible. It's the most beautiful combo of colors. It's a peachy pink graduating to yellow. I appreciated your calendar approach as I got confused when most of videos I watched simply gave the care instructions for making it bloom but not how to take care of it during it's blooming season. I have moved it a few times to see where it does best and am watching the amount of water I give it. Eventually I would like to pot it with another one in a different color for the cool effect.

Now most of the blooms are done and falling off. Can I get it to bloom again in the coming months by repeating this process, Will it strain the plant, Do I need to use fertilizer now?

Thanks for the great information. I never had luck with my Thksgv. Cactus before. I could never find the right light for it. But since moving into the lower level of my house (big windows, but more filtered light), I have two that have been doing very well. The one that .i have had for about four years has bloomed very well when it is supposed to (it is a combination of one pink and a white plant). The white variety has also bloomed at Easter (how appropriate!). Now I have a large red one that someone gave me, so I'm happy to have this information. I hope it will do as well as the other! Very nice to know what to do in the different seasons!

I grow mine in cactus and succulent mix and they seem to thrive. I have a dark pink one that still has one bud on it and it's June 11th!. It's been blooming non-stop since November. I've never had one do that before. They are near an east window and I never move them other than to rotate them periodically for even growth. I already have tons of new growth on them and am looking forward to tons of blooms this fall. My largest one is almost 3 feet in diameter. Definitely one of my favorite houseplants to grow.

Water and Nov and Dec it blooms. Water mostly weekly or bi-weekly depends on the other plants too. I will try repotting soil. When is the best time? In the Fall before bring it the house from outside? From the Western of Massachusetts I haven't feed etc. Umm, perhaps I should? I hope I do the right thing. ?

I bought two Christmas cacti today at my local hardware store, on impulse, thinking I will give them to my daughters for their homes, but I wanted to research their care before I deliver them. I found this site, and it seems to have excellent information - thank you! I do have one immediate question: both plants look healthy, with a couple of blooms and lots of buds, but the pots feel very heavy, as if they are saturated with water, and I wonder if that is a potential problem. I'm in the US hardiness zone 7. Any suggestions?
@Iruparazzo

i'm no expert, but i recently bought some very waterlogged ones and all I can think to do is keep the pot lifted - like with some small stones or coasters - and just don't water it for 2-3 weeks. If it's sunny, I've put it outside in the shade and bring it back in at night. It's been about 5 days and they've perked up nicely so far. [EDIT] Also, if the pots are wrapped in decorative foil/plastic packaging, take that off of it. Mine were so waterlogged that I had to do this in the parking lot directly after purchase and loads of water came pouring out. You can re-wrap them for gifting later - good luck!

Thank you for this helpful tutorial. I saved my Mom’s Thanksgiving cactus when she passed in 2016 and brought it back to life over the last 3+ years... was disappointed it didn’t flower last fall (2019) because it looked healthy (but I didn’t reduce temp and light). I repotted it in April 2020 and it looks good now (9/9/20). It sits in my LR on a table in front of an east-facing window. Next week I plan to move it to a dark, cooler, room every night from 7pm to 8am and put it back in the LR during the day. At the end of October I’ll leave it in the LR. Do you think this will help make it flower? Thanks from Bill in Westchester County, NY.

The one I have must be about 60-70 years old. Ive heard people say you should water every week, but this one seems to enjoy neglect.The soil in it has become like rock, and the dead leaves have joined it. I think it must get moisture from any dead leaves. We've always placed them back in the soil. It can go without water for weeks, and the bottom of the leaves have become like wood holding the top area up. The top area are soft leaves and it flowers all year.

I hope you can answer me soon, I have followed your instructions for my Thanksgiving cactus, I've been putting my cactus in very cool place at night since Sept 1 and also making sure that it gets at least 12 or more dark cool nights, so far so good, I've almost given up but I see a pin head size of what I think is a bud... I'm excited, but nervous, my question is should I keep it in cool place and long nights still or should I keep it normal lighting now since I see a very small (pin head size) bud? I don't think it will be in bloom for Thanksgiving, I'm just excited and grateful for blooms for December... It's the first I've been able to do this, thank you so much for all your information very informative, God bless you and yours.

This is how I get mine to flower and you can too - just stick in two Jobe's flowering fertilizer sticks every two weeks, keep the soil moist but not soaking wet and away from all radiators - this is a sure way to get your thanksgiving cactus to flower. You are not late - try it today and you should have buds by Christmas or a bit later. Let me know. No darkness, no fussing - just Jobe's flowering fertilizer sticks. My 5 cactus are all in bloom currently.

Today, there are hardly any buds or bright new green tips. The leaves have wilted some also it seems. Any suggestions? This is my second Christmas cactus. My first one died, I assume overwatering. This time the soil is dry and separates from the corners of the pot. Does thos mean it needs watering?

My pink one that I purchased last year just started blooming this week. I bought a red and what I am calling peach (I'm color blind so I am taking a shot in the dark with that one) last week have dropped all of their blooms and buds unfortunally. But I understand they tend to do that when you first bring them home because of the change in environment. But my blooming one gives me wonderful memories of my Grandmother because she always had a house full of them and african violets.

I am in an apartment. I don't get much light on my back porch. I don't get any at all on my front porch. I got my 3 Thanksgiving cacti after my mother died this year. All are three different colors. They all are starting to bloom or have blossoms. I brought them in today. They got a bit cold and I can see it on them, but they seem to all be recovering well from it. I am not sure where to put them to get the best sunlight. I am trying to figure out the best curtains to have in a room that can get light (currently have blinds). I guess it would be my bedroom since I don't like the idea of people from the parking lot being able to see into my living room and into my dining room when walking by. I know they will need light so I am also getting some hanging plant holders to hang them from the ceiling. I know they got too much sun this summer because they each have some red/purple leaves. When they are done blooming should I trim those red ones off or not worry about it? They still bloomed from those leaves. I am curious if I can move them to the back porch in the spring and summer and if they may do ok there without direct sunlight or if they are best kept indoor.

Hi Eileen, if they're blooming, that's the best sign. They do really well outside in the spring and summer, and I wouldn't clip off any red segments. A sheer curtain up to a window during the colder months, or a window with morning sun is a perfect place to grow them.

Hi! Yes, I'm using fine bark with my Thanksgiving cacti. If you wanted to mix some soil in with the fine bark, I would think it would work well, too. Thanks so much for watching and have a great day! :)

I just bought a Thanksgiving cactus and now the buds are falling off, is there something I can do to keep them from falling? Also I was wondering should I go ahead and repot it also since they are falling off or just leave it alone. Also will there be more buds forming or once they fall off do I have to wait until next year to get more buds?.

Hi Sheila! I have a video, "What causes unopened buds to drop from your Thanksgiving/Christmas cactus", publish date Nov 16, 2017. I wouldn't repot it...they don't like being repotted often...maybe every 2 or 3 years. Once these buds fall, they won't rebloom, but mine did bloom at Easter last year. (The tip for this is to give it regular care.) Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Thank you for sharing your wonderful cactus care tips! How did you ever figure out all the different requirements for each period of growth/rest? I'm going to see if I can find a Thanksgiving variety the next time I'm shopping. Would you recommend transplanting it into fresh bark right after purchasing it? Or wait until later if it is in bloom?

Hi Caroline and thank you so much for your sweet comment! (I always enjoy hearing from you!!) Believe it or not, I keep all the info on how to care for them on my calendar. (If I don't, I forget.) So I made up these cards, and I'll be including them seasonally in my orchid videos so that everyone can keep up with what to do for that month. :) I wouldn't transplant a new plant for 2 or 3 years...they like being crowded in their pot. If you transplant one while it's in bud or bloom, they will drop. Have a great day my friend! :) Happy growing!

I live in Phoenix where there are no night temps in the 55-60 degree range until about late Oct. or Nov. Can I still do the same process and get them to bloom even though it won't work for Thanksgiving and Christmas? When I lived in Rhode Island mine were gorgeous, but it is a challenge here in dry, dry, Phoenix!

Nancy Mumpton I'd like to share my experience. Where I live the coolest it gets is 60 to 65 So I didn't have much hope that Schlumberger would rebloom. I bought it last year and off course it was in bloom. So I just tried to put it outside and just after 3 weeks I noticed plenty of buds. I'm so thrilled. Put it outside and you might be pleasantly suprised.

Guess what, Jokha Mohamed! I did just that 3 weeks ago and my Schlumbergera 'Golden Dragon' is showing buds! I also have S. buckleyi (the original Christmas cactus) and it has not budded yet. Probably the Orchid Whisperer is right and it will bloom in late January/early February!

I have tried this cactus several times and no luck. I gave up a couple years ago, but this year I found a really lovely white one and I want so badly to keep her alive. I've learned they like humidity but not wet feet, I was treating mine like an actual cactus. But my question is, most of my store bought flowers I repot immediately if they're not in bloom. However, my Christmas cactus is in bloom and I was wondering if I should repot immediately after, or wait even longer bc the roots are growing out of the bottom 😔 I know they like to be a little root bound but how much is just too much?
@OrchidWhisperer
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Desiree! I wouldn't repot this Christmas cactus until Spring. When they're root bound, they bloom better, so repot in just a size larger pot. I wish you much success with it! I have a white one as well, and I love it! Thanks so much for watching and have a great day! :)

I have a question, I've had this Christmas cactusfor 3 years. It didn't bloom the first year I bought it. The second it did only one bloom. Then this year it did the one bloom again, then a month after the bloom died it did a full blooming. Do you have any idea why it would do this?

If it's healthy, that's great. I gave mine cool night temps during the month of September. That's what signals it to bloom around Thanksgiving. Or in my case, November and March. lol

Suzanne here, om, i have 50 plants, and they are drama queens, not all of mine bloom, as supposed too, but, they are not an easy plant, for sure, for some they are, some they are not, i have too many i realize haha, but my best friend does not change her care at all, all year round and they just bloom for her, and she waters a lot more than most people do haha, mine would all be dead if i did that haha

Hi Jean! At this point in the late summer, I usually water my Holiday cacti about every 2 days if they're outside, and every 3 or 4 days if they're growing inside. Hope that helps! :) Happy growing!
@JanetUrsel

Dry to the touch means that when you poke the soil, it is not damp, nor does it feel springy like a damp sponge. You'd have to dig your finger down a bit (or more in a large, deep pot) before you find the dampness. Hope this helps.

Sounds like fungal...white, black mildew, molds. You can use 2 tspn baking soda mixed till dissolved in hot water (1 cup). When cooled off pour it in a small spray bottle. Spray over and under leaves. Do it once a week until it is gone. Or use a peeled raw garlic clove slash it with a knife 2 or 3 times slightly then insert it a bit in the dirt right next to the plant. That will kill off any fungus and repel certain bugs. Great for roses and other plants that need protection. Good luck.

Hi Debra! I've learned after talking to many growers that it's the shorter days that actually signals the cactus to bloom, not the cooler temps. I didn't expose my Christmas cacti to cooler night temps this year just to see what would happen, and they're blooming beautifully. I know people who grow them in warmer climates (I have friends in SC) and they bloom. Happy growing and thanks again for watching! :)

I have a Thanksgiving cactus that had a fungus gnat problem so I put sand on top. All my other plants did fine and the gnats are gone - but within 12 hours, my thanksgiving cactus was a flat, drooping sad mess. I had no idea that it's roots like to breathe and I'm afraid I suffocated it. I removed the sand but it's been about a week and it hasn't perked back up. What I can do to help revive it?

Alaina Ferguson Hi Alaina and thanks so much for watching! Hopefully your cactus will recover...I would water it carefully, making sure the water drains well from the pot. You can also take cuttings from healthy parts of the cactus and root them in a potting soil for succulents. Happy growing! :)

Thank you for the reply! I might just go ahead and repot it in some soil that breathes better for it - in hopes that it perks up and prevents any future troubles. I have propagated from it before and have a 2 year old plant from the one I'm trying to recover which has got to be at least 10 years old so I don't want to give up on it. Hoping for the best! :)
