Nature has always been an inexhaustible spring of artistic creativity for Putu Winata. Throughout his career as an artist, nature has consistently been his source of inspiration. His works, themed around nature, explore both the material and spiritual aspects of the natural world. Putu’s paintings embody the aesthetic, intellectual, and moral visions of a Balinese artist who deeply loves nature in an anthropocentric era that is often unkind to the environment.
In his solo exhibition titled Tutur Jatiluwih (Tale of Jatiluwih), Putu Winata presents a number of works from his latest series of paintings centered on subak. Other works from the subak series have been showcased at Art Jakarta Gardens (April), Focus Art Fair New York (May), and the solo exhibition Sabda Air at D Gallerie, Jakarta (June) in the first half of 2024.
Subak is a distinctive Balinese irrigation system managed by farmers to irrigate agricultural land, primarily rice fields. The components of subak include terraced rice paddies, interconnected fields via a water channel system, villages, temples, and forests that protect the water supply. Subak also refers to the association of farmers who manage irrigation water in the rice fields. Having existed on the island of Bali for nearly 1,000 years, subak embodies the traditional Balinese wisdom of sustainable and environmentally friendly living.
