We spent Mexican Independence Day here in 2013 and got to see and hear the "Grito" from the main square. We paid 220 pesos for a great room at the Hotel Estrella, about two blocks from the main plaza; we really liked Tuxtla! The church on the main square, Catedral de San Marcos, has some sort of little wooden door on the exterior front facade. The little door opens on the hour or so and figurines pop-out and march around, or something like that. Check it out, Blake!

I never checked the prices of chiles when I had the chance in Mexico. Now we are stuck at home and trying to make salsa macha, birria and other mexican foods. One of the few places I know of that sells dried chiles in Vancouver just charged me $3.50 Canadian ($57 pesos) each for bags containing approximately 10 guajillo and ancho chiles (

Where is the video of the anthropologica/zoologica with the wonderful black jaguars and all of the indigenous fauna particular to Chiapas? Is it currently closed to the public?

Sorry. Miscommunication. It isn't on my channel. It didn't look like you went there and I was curious if that was because it is currently closed to the public. It is a zoological area just outside of town with a natural tree canopy and features all of the animals indigenous to Chiapas, including jaguars. It's famous.

Will you be visiting San Cristobal de las casas ? It is on our short list of possible retirement cities. Maybe we should add Tuxtla to the list, as we shy away from places with lots of tourists and/or expats. Thx...love your videos !

San Cristobal de las Casas is definitely worth checking out. There are expats and tourists from all over the world here but they are not the average American expat who lives in a gated community and expects all the same food and comforts as home. The foreigners here are laid back, creative, adventuresome and contribute to the community in many ways. There's a very high percentage of indigenous Mayans living here. The area is rich in history and culture, has beautiful colonial architecture, and the food is the best I've had in Mexico. There are also canyons, rivers, lakes, jungle and Mayan ruins in Chiapas.

@@cynthiacarlson4427 Thx. I guess we are not typical American expats either. We’ll be 62 and 57, my wife is a native Spanish speaker and my Spanglish is not terrible. We are Vegan, love dogs, hiking, walking, and I am a Jiu Jitsu addict. We lived in Costa Rica many years ago. We don’t have anything against expats but are not really seeking an expat group. And we would love a laid back vibe.

I know that you play music as I often see your keyboard in videos. How about a walk through of a Mexican music store. I play guitar and just beginning keyboard. What types of guitars and guitar strings are available in such stores. Can I find an new upgraded model of keyboard?

I'll keep it in mind for sure to do something music related! Truth be told, I do have a keyboard but I've just been learning for about a year and a half. I was taking classes in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. I've brought it with me because I don't want to let it go. I'd imagine that it's pretty much the same products that you can find here in Mexico as in the US, Canada, Europe, etc... Thanks for the suggestion and for watching!

Your video was the first result which came up, when I searched on youtube. However, I stopped watching after 2 seconds, as sadly you are walking around with a puritan covid nonsense mask in fresh air. Your video may well have been worth watching but i would prefer to watch someone else's video about this city- anyone who doesn't virtue signal their covid hysteria in the first seconds of their video.
