I guess many of the Tv shows will remain VHS / DVD only and will never be released on Bluray. Lots and lots of BBC / ITV shows from the 60s and 70s such as Rising Damp, On The Buses, I Claudius, Life On Mars, Keep It In The Family, Black Beauty, Manchild and so on. There are also zillions of great US shows such as Kojak, Starsky and Hutch etc that I would love to see on Bluray

There are worst situations than having one of your favorite tv shows stuck on dvd. Recently, I found out one of my favorite Tv shows that was cancelled 17 years ago after the 1st season was released on DVD, but only in the UK. Now you can’t even find used copies from the UK, because the show is that unknown. You can’t buy this show on iTunes/Apple TV, Amazon, or VUDU/Fandango at home.

One of my favorite shows just recently got announced, Las Vegas. Hopefully it is the uncensored versions the DVDs had. Good call on Nip Tuck. I am surprised Carnivale from HBO hasn't been released on Blu-ray. My fovorite DVD only show I want on Blu-ray is Coupling from BBC. A close second is the show Life (2007) that aired on NBC and produced by Universal. You mentioned the OC. A really great show. Thank You for bringing it up. There are a couple shows I was going to mentioned and looked up first and discovered they have over seas releases I may have to import. According to my Blu-ray site collection statistics I have 508 seasons of TV on disc.

My picks: Buffy and Angel for me are the two shows that should definitely be on blu ray. There’s some excuse that how it was filmed doesn’t allow for a blu ray upgrade to be possible, but I’ve heard a reason that someone with the initials NB who was in the show refuses to sign off on it and is being greedy. If that’s true, then that’s pretty sad. What’s he done since he was on Buffy besides act like a jerk and treat people badly? Friday The 13th The Series and Freddy’s Nightmares. Ahhhh two of my favorite shows and I get they don’t look the best, but I’d love to see these shows on blu ray. Spider-Man: The Animated Series and X-Men: Evolution. Two of the best Marvel animated series and I don’t believe either of them have official blu ray releases as season sets. It’s not like older animated series haven’t gotten blu ray releases. Batman: The Animated Series is on blu ray now and looks amazing. Lilo and Stitch: The Series. This show seems to have been forgotten but it’s amazing and I’m shocked they didn’t do anything like that for the tv show when the 20th anniversary of the movie rolled around in 2002. I’m hopeful with the live action movie headed our way next year we will get the show. I’d love to see DS9 and Voyager get major upgrades ala TOS and TNG but Paramount has said the demand isn’t there as much as it is for those two prior series and that the work needed to be done to clean the picture up and upgrade costs a lot of money. They are very effects heavy shows but I’d be very happy if they got upgraded versions like TOS and TNG did. Tales From The Crypt. I have no idea how this is not on blu ray yet. I know it’s not on Max either so it could be a licensing issue but it’s on dvd so bring this one to blu ray please! Yu-Gi-Oh. There are some rumors that the show is getting an upgrade to be put on blu ray. Hope this is true because I’ve never seen it on blu ray. Said it earlier and I’ll say it again. Buffy and Angel deserve blu ray upgrades. Not buying the “filmed incorrectly so we can’t put it on the format” excuse. Something else is going on with it. I don’t know if it’s music rights or something else but something is up. Smallville took a long time to get to blu ray but it made it and looks phenomenal. So I think we will see Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel on blu ray sooner rather than later. Also, since Sony is working with Disney to put out stuff on blu ray, and Disney owns Fox which owns the rights to BTVS and Angel, it wouldn’t surprise me if we see each season arrive on blu ray. They know those fans would run out and grab those releases so I think we will see them sooner rather than later.

TV shows like this are part of the reason I got an All Region DVD player with upscaling. In the US the series I wanted was out of print and cost $140. In the UK the series was in print and cost $25. An LG Multiregion DVD player cost $40, with upscaling and an HDMI port. So for less than half the cost of the out of print DVDs, I got a new set of the series I wanted and opened up to DVDs from anywhere in the world to me.

recently when they put bonanza on DVD, they said that they were lucky to get it on DVD. It’s all the right issues and the reason why more and more TV shows don’t go to Blu-ray is because when they took beloved series like Star Trek TNG and I love Lucy and put them on Blu-ray. They just didn’t sell enough to make a profit off the Blu-ray and yet the DVDs kept selling so I think that’s why so many TV shows don’t get Blu-ray. However I do think that if a TV show came out early on DVD like Will and Grace they deserve a reissue DVD with the complete episodes or all of the seasons since they did a relaunch of the series or a sturdier box at something like that so that’s just my opinion. I’m glad you made this video though.

TV shows on physical media are a hard sell to the studios now as they won't put the money into these releases as it's a massive amount of work and unless they'd make money it's easier to put them on streaming. The only shows that might get further upgrades to 4k are ones like Friends, The X-Files, or the Sopranos. In regards to your list I have all 9 seasons of One Tree Hill but some of the discs have disc rot and won't play. I doubt we would ever get a blu-ray release but I know they are all on streaming services. Another problem is the music. If you watch them on Max or Fandango there might have been music replacements but I'm not sure on that. Very frustrating.

About starting on Blu Ray then studios downgrading to DVD in subsequent seasons...like it or not it's a lack of sales issue. It's not like a movie where it's just one disc. Multiple seasons, multiple discs, and then the shows just don't sell enough to justify the cost of production. It sucks, but that's just how it is. Plus now the higher quality stuff is on streaming, so even less of an incentive to put it on high quality physical, when they can sell DVD sets AND then have people pay for steaming services if they want to watch the higher quality episodes.
@50TBRD

Pretty much anything before HD cable is going to only be on DVD unless its a massive seller like DBZ or Friends or they have access to the original film. In most cases it just too expensive to upscale all the episodes and it was never practical to keep all the film.

Some series won't benefit from bluray. Starting in the 1970s most comedy series switched to videotape instead of film so there won't be much benefit from bluray. Night Court is an example of this. There are exceptions, such as Frasier and Cheers, Seinfeld, and Mash. There are also some series that were shot in standard definition digital. These also won't benefit from bluray, sadly Deep Space Nine and Voyager fall into this category.
