On February 19th, 1955 a plane en route from Albuquerque to Santa Fe crashed into the Sandia mountains due to faulty navigation equipment. All 16 people on board were killed on impact. Much of the plane remains on the mountain and is accessible by a tough hike into the Sandia Mountain wilderness area.
