This is a film of general anti-war expression just 10 years after Japanese surrender in 1945. But the tragedy of it can't cover the brutality of Japanese militarists in the wars!

The atom bombs may have made it harder for the Japanese to have to face up to that reality than say for the Germans with the holocaust- films like The Sea and Poison (1986) and The Human Condition (1959-61) were more critical of Japanese brutality and cruelty. There is also the documentary The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On (1987). Still, this is a good and touching film.
