I like this scene too; it's shot in one take and contains TP's trademark dark irony. But they actually hate and regularly mock Leland, as we see in scene after scene. Really, they despise everyone except for themselves. They are more evil than most characters on this show, hard as that is to believe. In some ways, they represent the deepest evil at the heart of Twin Peaks.

@ShinyFlakesShinyFlakes
Жыл бұрын
Are you referring to twin perfects theory?
@TimothyBrake
Жыл бұрын
@@ShinyFlakesShinyFlakes I don't know what that means. There is more to this one scene than meets the eye. The left lamp is dark & black with black items on the desk. To the right the desk light is lit and a white dog with earth globe. Notice the exact positions of the shadows. The left door is dark and the right door is light with the shadow reflecting. When the shorter guy jumps, look at where the shadow is going (and where his shadow is casting in the end). Look where then shadow of the taller guy moves to and where it is while dancing. There are no coincidences and with stage lighting all these shadows could have easily been negated but they aren't. There is way more to this scene than meets the eye and its brilliantly done however it takes some rewatching and really look at what's being visually and audibly sent to the viewer. Whatever that means is up to interpretations of course.
@ShinyFlakesShinyFlakes
Жыл бұрын
@@TimothyBrake you’re overthinking it. What exactly do you think is being represented by these shadows
@TimothyBrake
Жыл бұрын
I don’t have to think about something I see visually. When you go to a second passthrough of any show, you see more details than the first passthrough. Your question where one could start to overthink it. What do I think? I think the director is telling us these men are going to do bad things (or are doing bad things) because their shadows are deliberately cast to every light object in the room. On a meta level that means whatever these men represent ain’t good and foreshadowing bad things. One plausible theory, where you alluded to, was the demon represents TV violence and it’s being packaged into a common dad while these 2 men welcome it and want to profit from it thereby dooming the world. It could also mean other things and it’s up to interpretation. More generally it could mean good things are used to secretly provide bad things and other men gain from it to eventually destroying the good in this world either willingly or unwillingly, deliberately or unknowingly (casting shadows over the world).

lmao just binged Twin Peaks last month so no surprise this is recommended to me now, but yeah this scene definitely stood out to me. Wakes up with white hair one day and then just shows up with a devilish tune that makes these two dance like silly servants. With context it really does sum up the show.. and without context it also really sums up what a weird show it is. lol

They danced to humor him because he's clearly a liability to them now and they want him pacified when possible.

I am rewatching Twin Peaks since 2019, and this exact scene kept replaying in my head (thinking forward to my favorite scene I mean. When Leland sings this cute song). What a coincidence.

Accuracy is key in symbolism, information must not be wasted, the director imbues all with meaning.

I showed this clip to a friend before we started the show without giving them any context. I never knew there was an emotion for "laughing confusedly"
