Straight Darby gave us all a reality check: in so many difficult situations SOMEONE has to be the grown up, and even then, they dunno what they’re doing. I think that’s adulthood in a nutshell. Realizing even pastors aren’t prepared for so many things but 90% of the work is simply being there.

As someone who is gay and was raised as a Jehovah's Witness I really love hearing both your perspectives on everything. Hearing how Grant came to the realisation that not everything he was taught and believed in was true and that those beliefs tried to teach us to hate other people just connects with me so much. Also on the topic of God, I've always found it confusing that God supposedly gave us free will but we have to follow his word exactly otherwise we'd be punished for it. I just don't understand how anyone can think that makes sense.

You guys, this podcast is only 3 episodes in and listening has already been so relatable and healing for me. I grew up evangelical and closeted in the south. It was a long process of questioning, confusion, and trying my best to be a good Christian and stay faithful. I finally accepted I was an atheist at 18 but it was a painful process to get there. I also moved far away from home at 20 and still have a rocky relationship with my family. At 30 I still occasionally realize things I was indoctrinated to believe are not true. This podcast is hilarious while being so vulnerable and open as well. Hearing a perspective from an ex pastor that's this candid and open is also so interesting and something I've never heard before. Keep up the good work guys, love it.

Great episode! I love the content being about real life shit and relatable issues! It doesn’t have to only be funny funny funny, thirds are relevant conversations and, as a Messy Queen super fan, it’s great getting to know Darby (and straight Darby) more intimately! Grant- my old company from NY actually had the same thing with regard to bereavement pay and the amount of paid time off being based on the relationship to the deceased. It’s quite common, actually. And Darby please let us know about Chik Fil A- I rely on you guys as my gay moral compass and if I can get some guilt free grub from them, I’m all over it… Also- are we just not posting this show on the Patreon after episode 1? Grant's view on hell is exactly how i feel, and i have never met anyone else who feels the same. what all loving god would condemn a person to eternal suffering? i still consider myself catholic, or catholic adjacent, but my views are so skewed from what i've been taught i also think i fall into the "not sure what i believe" category. i like to think theres a heaven but i honestly dont think i ever truly believed in hell. even since i was young, part of me was smart enough to recognize the blatant contradiction of hells existence in relation to god's love. there was probably a few years where i was terrified, but roman catholics near me were too focused on hating everyone and everything while living that they didnt have any time to think about death.

I am loving the new podcast. With partner from a evangelical cult and my growing up queer and gender-fluid in the south, your stories really hit home. My most interesting death story was being an atheist learning the Lord’s Prayer and comforting phrases in German to say with a parent of a patient on Hospice. Being there for people in that last moment can be intense.
