I love how this movie introduced us to every kind of tornado. The first one in the ditch with the truck was an F1. The one in the field was a "solid F2", followed by several waterspouts. A stronger F3 hits on the hill when Jo and Bill reaffirm their love for each other. A stronger F4 hits the drive-in at night and then concluding with the massive F5 at the end.

Each twister is visually accurate if you to count from F1-F5, scientifically speaking, even though the first twister they chase physically looks like an F1, it does the damage of an F4. The F2 and following water twisters don’t do enough damage so they could really be the F1’s. The remaining 3 are all fajita scale accurate in rope size and destruction.

Just came back from seeing it and it was *_awesome,_* personally found it more enjoyable than the original, as someone who was really itching for another tornado movie that seemed rad enough to give the time of day like I would the og Twister, (I mainly found it more fun _because_ it was something new, and because the tornado facts were way more accurate... excluding the pipedream wish fulfillment of trying to stop a tornado, though seeing them try to achieve that goal was made cool enough to be exciting and not eye rolling, "so bad it's good" like I thought it'd be, which ruled,) but it could never come close to having the same... _feel_ of excitement that the original does, nah. They each build up and execute the blood pumping stuff in their own way. I don't think either is better or worse than the other in that regard. It was a super fun ride, my whole family's still talking about it, and I think that made it a worthy successor, but I don't think anyone who adamantly wants it to have that same feel as the original Twister, or see the characters stay one-track-minded on achieving a specific goal throughout the entire film like the ogs did, will enjoy it very much. Anyone who just wants to see an awesome tornado flick with great effects, infinitely more believable tornado trivia, and a fantastic lead to weather the worst the film can throw at her, I think will have a great time at the movies :)

Can I just say that looking at this scene now, that the filmmakers and editors did an AMAZING job with this scene of the approaching twister. In some tornadoes due to direction inflows and outflows of the storm, there can be a calmness in the air that you wouldn't know there's anything wrong (DEADLY wrong at that), and with it being at night makes a tornado ten times more terrifying. The fact that they gave you next to no warning that its coming and going to scrape right by them is true to life, since night time and rain-wrapped tornadoes are far more likely to kill than during the day just because of the fact you can't see them. Right before it hits, they have the effects for the lightning going off and the F4 if you can pause the video at 1:52 at just the right frame, you can see it for a split second and how close its gotten. They really did a good job with the effects on how scary an F4 at night really can be.

Not to mention if you are wearing headphones or listening through surround sound, you'll notice they added a low bellowing growl (kinda like Godzilla's low bellow growl) to add more of a horror aspect of a night time tornado. I was 9 years old when I saw Twister for the first time (this was around early 1998). This scene was, easily, the scariest part of the movie for me. From the eerie atmosphere (you know something's going to happen, but you don't know what or when), to the comic relief Dusty showing genuine fear and panic, to the visuals, it all works perfectly at instilling fear. The fact The Shining is playing only adds to that (this was my first exposure to it, and even without context, Danny encountering the twins is scary). I'm 35 and this scene still gives me chills.

Gradual destruction of the building, not knowing what will happen next. Cameras swaying in all directions like panic. Then once we think it's scary enough, they throw a WHOLE car at the set followed by the neon sign. Truly a great shock and awe moment and really concludes the scene with thrilling intensity. We were hit by a tornado when I was 7 years old, we had just gotten off the school bus, this is pretty accurate, the house stood afterwards, but it wasn't safe, it was like being hit by a freight train, and deafening, I'm afraid of strong winds to this day, that siren goes off. I'm in the basement almost 60 years later. From Iowa

THe scene at 3:53 with the twister destroying the screen just as the movie has a closeup of the equally unraveling Jack Torrance (Nicholson) is magnificent.

These types of tornadoes in the night are called "Nocturnal Tornadoes" and these types of tornadoes are actually deadlier than the destruction they cause in daylight.

My son and I love this movie, especially when tornadoes are portrayed as sounding like roaring lions. Watch it again, every tornado sounds like an MGM movie opening.

I've been through tornados in the dead of night. If you are on the wrong side all you'll see is rain obscuring the tornado. The sound is the scariest part when you can't see it.

I saw a tornado once in real life. Cut a 30 mile or so path through western Massachusetts about 14 years ago. An area not known for this sort of weather.... Sounded like a freight train going 100 mph, just like they say. Destroyed this house and that one, leaving the one in the middle almost untouched, just like a movie. Killed a few people. Just sat on the highway, stuck in traffic, watched it cross in front of us and spin through a neighborhood....pick up a whole house and just throw it like nothing.... Absolutely the scariest goddamn thing ever. I mean EVER. That said, I loved this movie in the 90s but life got a little too real that day))

Helen Hunt was so adorable in this film. When I first saw a Tornado in person it was closer to me than it is to her in daylight.. 2:44 I did the exact same thing as she did here. I was so captivated by the power of the tornado I took a few steps forwards watching the tornado after I warned everyone in the buildings to take shelter in the center stairwell

The TV going to snow probably doesn't happen any more. The analog TVs could pick up the electrical output from lightning and tornadoes. There was a trick I dimly remember where you could turn to one of the low band channels ( 2 to 6) and then use the fine tuning control to zero in on the correct frequency. The TV would flash with lightning strokes, and if a tornado was close enough it would be a steady snow.

Man it still makes me laugh with this scene the main characters are at a drive in while the movie The Shining is playing right before the Tornado hits and obliterates the movie screen right at the part where Danny sees the ghosts of the twin girls that were killed by their father before the Torrances came.

Perfect timing at 3:12 - The movie showing on the big screen is Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining", and we see Shelley Duvall's character in a moment of sheer terror right before the tornado starts to destroy the screen. A small detail that captures the terror everyone else is feeling as they're running for their lives to seek cover from the oncoming tornado. (Others here have pointed out how Jack Nicholson's character is uttering his famous "Here's Johnny!" line right as the twister is demolishing the screen.)

The way they both look at the tv its like they already knew what is about to happen and if i remember correctly when this movie was in production some of the tornadoes in this movie were in fact real.
