Mostly in east Texas but it’s a rare but it can happen I once saw a black bear in Waco. Texas

They are definitely present across most of the state… I’ve seen them near El Paso, and north in Amarillo, too. They’re just in varying amounts and varying population densities. It all depends on the environment, food sources, and the amount of people living there. Despite the fact that, yes, they can adapt to human habitation, they’d prefer not to have to… The border wall did cause some wildlife problems, as far as animals being able to get back and forth…or access their complete territories. And not just bears, but all the larger species, Sonoran pronghorn, bighorn sheep, deer, bobcats, pumas, and the few ocelots and jaguars that are remaining or trying to re-establish in the lower 48. Only the rodents, amphibians, reptiles and small things can get through, in places. Black bears are actually present in much of the lower 48, much of Canada and much of Alaska. I think one of the few places they are NOT living in, surprisingly, is where I live in San Diego County, CA! But they are two hours north of here, in Los Angeles.
