All credit to Martin Scorsese for campaigning so hard so Satyajit Ray could get this Oscar. He rallied his close buddies Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and others, which set the ball rolling in Mr. Ray's favor. He continues to spread the word about Mr. Ray's films. It was made during the Vietnamese War. Adding to the comment you earlier read (which actually is true). The flute of the poor kid triumphed over the sound of all the instruments of the rich kid. That's why he gloomily sat down realising he can't break the spirit of the poor kid. Also his own robot broke his pile of stones etc which took a long time for him to do. He was unable to conquer the oppressed and realized this cycle will continue forever. Experts think it makes a strong anti-war statement.

@@I_m_4m4n Can you provide evidence to say that this short film was definitely about US vs Vietnam war, or if Satyajit Ray himself said so. If Satyajit Ray did not say so himself then let the art be art and let people interpret it freely, because art is about individual expression and also individual interpretation, everyone has different life experiences and thus interpret a word or picture differently from you. What you are doing instead is limiting its interpretation because you are so sure that yours is the only true one, which may very well be, but in the absence of him saying so you can not say that your version is the only definitive one. Satyajit Ray made art, let it be so, don't box it. P.S - I dont doubt your interpretation, it is a perfectly valid one, and i see it too, but it does not have to be the only one.

Finally Jaby find the God of Indian cinema - the great Satyajit Ray. He is one of the greatest of all time in film making in the world. His lifetime best movie Pather panchali is actually his debut movie. Beside film making he is also a great writer who created the famous bengali detective character Feluda( greater than Sherlock Holmes among bengalis) and sci fi character Prof Shanku. Also he was great painter, cartoonist, music director or composer. Steven Spielberg created the famous movie ET :THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL based on the mimeograph copy of Ray's unfilmed movie script 'The Alien' leaked from the Columbia Pictures, You can watch Ray's interview about that movie. Actually the parallel cinema or art film of indian film industry started by Satyajit Ray in bengali film industry Tollywood ( bengali film industry is the original Tollywood since 1930s, telegu Tollywood later named same. @@srinathk6137 well if you want to get into his films in general then of course Apu Trilogy is the obvious place to start. If you've already seen that then next you could watch Aguntuk,Goopy Gyne Baga byne,Jalsaghar,Charulata and Pratidwandi Coming to the political commentary I might've given the wrong impression when I brought up socialism. It was the cpm era the government had financed his debut film but that doesn't necessarily mean he was for or against any of that. Just that it's a discussion worth having. Even back then communism in its true form was a taboo. Goopy Gyne Baga Byne in a very subtle way was an anti war in the disguise of a children's movie. Do watch Pratidwandi it's set during the Naxalite movement and it shows a neutral light of thinking. And I'll have to say he wasn't a communist, humanist maybe definitely a liberal given the family he was brought up in. I'm ranting so much because communist has almost become a gaali these days lol

I think you didn't mind the symbolic expression when privileged boy sticks chewing gum on the head of Robot. it is called TILAK (putting vermilion between eyebrow on the forehead with thumb), so he did such victorious symbolic practice since he considered himself the winner. so consider the robot as the privileged boy. -then boy shot down kite but he felt discontent soon enough so he activated all his toys and took the robot and activated it on the floor but that robot destroyed the toy tower which you can consider as his tower of pride or falls understanding of happiness. - in the end, materialistic happiness is not eternal.

Idk if jaby reads this comment but this is what I understand from the short film- At the start of the film we see the kid wearing the Mickey mouse ears and drinking coke, signifying that he has probably been to Disney land and is wealthy..the director Satyajit ray tries to make the audience relate, like the scene where he is waving goodbye, the way he drinks the coke I can feel the cold coke, the bubbles entering the mouth To the next scene, its after a birthday because we see slightly deflated balloons, and it's very relatable, we have all been there. We see all the gifts the kid has got. Next scene- the poor kid plays his flute, he tries to pay with the rich kid but the rich kid just tries to make it a competition..there is so much innocence but we have all done that at some point...the poor kid brings all he has got and we wants to play together, but the rich kid takes it as a competition. Next scene- the poor kid is flying the kite, so the rich kid goes like if I can't have it, so cant you. After which the golden scene-- that the rich kid turn on all his toys, but even despite all the toys he has, he can hear the flute, it signifies emptiness within him...and also the scene with the wind, where the rich kids ivory tower falls is so significant, indicates that his ivory tower can't make him happy and didn't stand out...also its so amazing to see the poor kid who tried to play along, just continue to play his humble tune and enjoy himself... 12 mins. Not a single word spoken. But conveyed a lifetime of meaning. Take a bow sir.

Another subtle observation is the robot hitting the pillar and bringing it down in the end symbolic of kicking the pride and ego
