On April 22 and 23, we left for the sub-district of Mahu, where we had been working for almost two years with our Rotarian friends. We travelled for six hours by all-terrain vehicle to get there because it is very remote and there are no real roads, just paths which are sometimes very dangerous. It is also a region where malaria is common, and polio cases are increasing again. For the past year and a half, we have been working with Rotary on projects like Water Connections and Zero Malaria that help this community.
In Mahu, we helped repair the medical centre's water supply and fought malaria with Zero Malaria, and Rotary got to see everything we did. During our visit, we saw how our work helped people and spoke to local leaders and villagers about their problems. We listened to what they experienced every day. We explained to them how we can help them get water, healthier food, good hygiene habits, access to electricity and health care in regions where they are non-existent.
A critical moment was the delivery of Haray solar lamps from SolarBuddy to 100 families. These lamps are handy for children to do their homework and for families after dark because no one has electricity here. The villagers were grateful and hopeful, showing us our mission was critical.
Mahu? It's hard for those who aren't used to it. Our Rotarian friends were courageous despite the discomfort, noise, and mosquitoes everywhere, and my hats off to them all. These two days with local families helped see how they cope with difficult situations.
We became very close to each other and worked hard to help nearly 8,000 people in the Mahu sub-district. We want to thank our friends at Rotary for helping us so much! Together, we are truly making a difference in bringing hope and solutions to communities that need it most in East Sumba.
