Our first exercise today is a slow semitone “bend.” Ideally, you’ll have a chromatic tuner to analyze your pitch. I like www.tuner.ninja for a simple, web-based tuner that doesn’t require any downloads.
First, select a pitch as your home base. I’ll choose middle C, or C4. Lower voices, you may be more comfortable on C3 instead. If you have a keyboard, play your reference pitch (C4 or C3). If you don’t you can use a piano app or another tuner that plays pitches.
Ascending/Descending Semitone Bend
Then take your time bending up one semitone to C# or Db. Really take your time. A semitone or half-step is the smallest interval in western music, but there’s actually a lot of space between semitones. Going slowly with this bend will help teach you to dial in your tuning. Matching pitch, or singing in unison requires us to be precise. If I’m slightly off, it doesn’t sound good.
Try the opposite direction, bending down to either B3 (from C4) or B2 (from C3).
I encourage you to pay attention to what it feels and sounds like when you’re in perfect unison, vs. when you’re out of tune or exactly one semitone apart. Unison should feel like total consonance and blending together. Being out of tune should feel unsettled.
Major Scale “Bungee” Exercise
Our second fun exercise for better pitch accuracy is a bit more “traditional”. When I learned this in college, we called it a “bungee” exercise. This is the major scale bungee, where we start on step 1 of the major scale and progressively jump up the scale.
If you want expert level, get your starting pitch and try the whole thing without a pitch reference. Then, test yourself at the end to see if your “1” is still in tune.
I hope you find these exercises challenging and helpful as you improve your sense of pitch!
