If you’ve been thinking about riding your eBike across Catalina island we just did it. Sorry for the footage shakiness at times. I shot this using mostly hyper lapse to conserve battery life of my phone. Our journey to Avalon began at 9:30 am. We made a stop at Little Harbor which is on the other side of the island and the beach view was worth it.
The rad mini bikes we rode are ideal for this trip as they have fat tires but have smaller wheels than large fat tire bikes so they climb hills really well.
The riding surface we took was essentially like a fire road (dirt and gravel). Paved sections near the airport are worn out asphalt road that has been pothole filled over so many times it’s like riding on cobblestones. Luckily, there are some newly paved portions on the downhill Avalon island side which help where there is a lot of braking needed. If you consider the ride, ideally bring a second battery, bring snacks and water, try to do the ride on an overcast day (there’s no shade), and if you have the chance charge your batteries at the airport and take a rest break there. Watch out for cars on the airport to Avalon leg of your journey.
