Graham looked up to him as a sort of god-like figure as many did, I just think Dean had a fatal addiction to adrenaline as some in the climbing community do, we've lost too many of them incl. As a former NPS ranger in Yosemite, 1980-84, I was there, on the rescues, or actually the body recoveries from the first groups of BASE jumpers off El Captain. While these individuals all claim to have the right to jump, they seem to forget about the negative psychological effect on some of the rescuers. Body recoveries do take a toll on people. And the jumpers are not the ones picking up the pieces.

Exactly. These people are about me, me, me. And they criticize the selfie takers. No consideration anyone else. Reminds me of the 3 young adults in pursuit of selfie going over Vernal falls. Not just traumatic, imagine the danger . . . if you wanna commit suicide, leave others out of it.

And that's justification to live an irresponsible, selfish, narcissistic life, leaving behind people you love and who care for you? You don't suffer at all because you're dead, it's those you leave behind that suffer. Human psychology fascinates me, I wonder what he'd have done different knowing this would have been his last jump, then again, we tend to live our lives as if we're immortal, as if things like this won't happen to us. Fascinating, much respect as I couldn't live this irresponsibly, it's tough enough living with the thought of knowing it could end with the blink of an eye without the added risk, may he rest well and may his family find peace rom this terrible tragedy.

I went back year after year. I wish I could live there.......... and never for a moment did I even consider base jumping or putting on a wing suit. The risk to reward ratio was just too great for me because it just takes that 1 time that things don't go right and your dead.

videoclipits BASE jumping is illegal in Yosemite. Your tax dollars and entrance fees are paying for S&R for retrieval of these corpses. The park service is already strapped for funds as it is why add to it? I don’t care if people want to jump but not in areas where it’s not allowed. Plus Yosemite is readily accessible to major metropolitan areas. People already do illegal jumps there, allowing it will boost the number of people going there to jump.

People frequently say "He/she died doing what they loved" but only because it makes THEM feel better! Life has so much to offer, it is sad when someone dies in their prime, never getting the chance to explore other avenues in life that can be so much more rewarding. I used to love "thrill-seeking" activities, but they were very well-calculated risks with extra safety precautions in place. Everyone should stop their badmouthing for just a moment to show a little respect for the fallen jumpers, their friends, and their families while they attempt to work through and overcome this tragedy. It saddens me to see so such anger and disrespect from people on the internet who could never understand what it meant to be someone who dedicated almost 30 years of their life to something and die in the pursuit of its elevation. It doesn't matter that these guys are base jumpers any more than if they were another kind of professional athlete who died of some sport related injury. I won't go as far as to say that everyone who talks bad on the internet is a fat couch potato, but I will say that 99% of them, if not all of them, are not living the life of their dreams. They are not by any means living the life that they would pick for themselves if they had the power to do so. These men though, their lives were their own and what right do people have to judge them from their little white cubicles and suburban couches. These men had what most people will never have. They knew what it meant to spend every day, from sunrise to sunset, not only living their own dream, but getting paid to do it. Their lives were not a meager rat race of clocking in on time, taking your scheduled lunch break, then going home to make dinner, and watch re-runs on Netflix like the average American online critic. These are the kind of people that change the world and define a culture. The great monumental pieces of art and invention are made from this cut of people. The people who from the moment they wake, they dedicate themselves to the perfection of their art or whatever they pursue. Most of us can not attempt to truly understand such discipline. Every day they were determined to find new ways expand not only the boundaries of their field, but their own personal limits. As a result, they have felt more of the human experience than most of us could ever hope to understand. You can go online and watch people make rude comments and snide remarks. They insult and make insensitive wisecracks about their tragic demise. I don't have to repeat the comments, you have seen them and hopefully been just as insulted by them. Just as insulted that people have the nerve to talk about another persons death with such heartless vitriol. These men died doing what they loved, but more importantly, they LIVED doing what they loved. Even if you don't understand their lifestyle or agree with their choices, that kind of lifelong dedication and discipline should be respected by everyone. If you are too insensitive or heartless to understand this, then I would hope you at least can find it in you to show respect for the families of the fallen while they overcome this heartbreaking tragedy.

Your almost as big of a moron as this half a tard who disintegrated himself into a mountainside.. Im sure his children are grateful for the lesson... BTW MORON... there are degree's of risk that are acceptable... The average lifespan of these WINGSUIT Tards is 6 years.... They either stop... have career ending injuries, or they DIE.. Part of being a Parent is being semi responsible... And at least trying to mitigate the risk of death long enough to make sure your able to actually raise your children... IMO this kind of death can not be called an "ACCIDENT"... If the degree of risk is known.. and its so high that only 400 people in a world of 7 billion are willing to even try it ONCE... then it almost qualifies as a Death Wish... Because lets face it.. Many more then 400 are physically capable of donning a flying suit and jumping out of a plane.... It was thrilling to fly missions in B17's over Europe too... However not single guy volunteered to fly more then his 25 missions... And they were drafted... and they were doing it for a cause beyond their own narcissism..

I'm not against doing dangerous things when necessary to accomplish more noble deeds. When I go to work, I need to drive a car. Some would argue that driving a car is more dangerous than base jumping, but driving is a necessary evil in a modern world. Jumping off the side of a mountain purely for the thrill of doing it is facing danger for no other reason than a quick thrill. And make no mistake, if you do this long enough, eventually you WILL BE killed or injured. Also, base jumpers will tell you that what they feel can't be expressed-it can only be felt by the people who live this life. That's the problem: that no one who does this does it one time and gets it out of their system. They feel the need to do it over and over again, every time lessening their chances of getting out alive. I'm not saying that every base jumper will die, but your chances of dying while base jumping are a lot greater than my chances of dying while watching you base jump. Let me also say, as someone who HAS nearly died in a very painful way, NONE of these dead base jumpers has ever died doing what they loved. Right before they smacked into the rocks, they were hoping to get a few more years in and hopefully die peacefully in bed, surrounded by loved ones, instead of the momentary agony before it all went black. And last but not least, this guy apparently thought he was going to live forever, because strapping your "best friend" to your back and jumping off a cliff is not something a man would do if he took all the risks into account. Thank goodness he never had an accident with the dog attached.

There is a short 17 second clip of his gopro helmet cam. It looks like Hunt hit the wall and Potter tried to swerve right but hit a second later. They were threading a hole in the mountain and it got too tight. Check it out for yourselves but its not pleasant.

Totally irresponsible of him to place the dog's life in danger. The animal cannot consent. And, probably would have refused if it could. That was wrong as HELL in my opinion.

You have a very valid point, my friend (impersonating a past President!) -- NO one really KNOWS what is in the mind of a person who seeks these extreme thrills, but, it isn't "normal!:" This planet IS overpopulated, so maybe they're altruistically interested in decreasing the human count, rather abnormal, we think!

You two are idiots, and should be ashamed of attitude towards life. You must all live extremely sad, boring and story-less lives. May you all hit lay in the dirt and have everyone forget your name in a year. These two accomplished more than you could ever dream of combined. Terrible humans you are.

10-15 BASE jumpers are killed per year, and BASE jumping is considered one of the highest risk sports, if not the top one. But if you watch these guys in interviews, it seems that that is what gives them the adrenaline rush. It seems it's an addiction that none of them can kick. Their poor families.

Who paid for all the recovery resources that were wasted on spatchula-ing their bodies off the ground ... while real emergencies may have gone unattended to? FYI, these guys would agree that their own deaths were not tragedies - everyone dies and they died doing what they loved. Not many people get to checkout that way.

@Kevin Garcia you mix everything,nature ,dying in a building,i love nature,i love mother nature but what 's the connection in doing something like wingsuit where you have a 95%+ probability of dying,no more nature then...
@blaisehanon
3 жыл бұрын
@Kevin Garcia the problem with this is that it ends up bad ,because,like drugs,you need more and more dopamine to get that high feeling,then one day you die. you can do extreme sports,nothing wrong with that if you're well trained, but wingsuit is just plain suicide.

Can someone tell me how they both ended up dying? I'm confused as to how both of their parachutes wouldn't work simultaneously...
@johnarundell7951
9 жыл бұрын
Jade McKeogh They were flying on the descent extremely close to the terrain. They were meant to go through a gap in the ridge line then deploy parachutes safely and easily on the other side. They wouldn't have known they were too low until it was too late. Hunt hit first and Potter tried to avoid him according to police who have seen his helmet cam footage. Even if they pulled chutes at the last second it wouldn't have saved them. Only option was to make it through the ridge by flight :/

I think they were taking the same line and both slammed into the same cliff face. They were going through a very narrow passage called "The Notch". Potter was in the lead and his mate had jumped a second or two after him. There would have been no time for the tailing guy to react when Potter hit the rocks. Potter had a camera strapped to the back of his head so he could film his mate. That would only have been possible if they were perfectly aligned. They'd jumped just on sunset to avoid detection and the poor light wouldn't have helped them judge such a narrow margin of error at speeds like that. Potter's girlfriend was spotting for them and told searchers she's heard two loud bangs one immediately after the other. They were found lying just a few metres apart on the ground at The Notch. I'm glad the dog survived.

If base jumping is illegal, I take it insurance companies wont touch these people with a barge pole. So I would think the families left behind are left to suffer the loss of a loved one and the loss of financial support. Somewhat selfish in that regard.
