Great video on positioning. I do have 2 thoughts.... The plate umpire should always have tags (tag ups) and touches at third base. Second, your insistence that a call made should stand and no appeal should be granted unless it's a rule question contradicts the ideas that getting the call right is more important then being firm about your call. For example, a play is made on a batter runner at first base and the field Umpire calls the batter runner out however the plate umpire sees that the first baseman pulled his foot. If the offensive manager sees this as well and asks for an appeal from the field umpire, the field Umpire should meet with the plate umpire to see if he saw the pulled foot, and the correct call should be made by the field umpire. It's always better to get the call right than to have an umpire ego trip. I understand that some Umpire believe that correcting a call lowers the confidence in the Umpire from the managers perspective, but it's not our job to care about the managers opinion, it's our job to make correct calls and administer the rules as they are written. To be clear, no umpire should SEEK to overturn another umpires call, but should make sure the correct call is made once an appeal is requested. My crew has signals to indicate whether we saw something if an appeal is imminent. Well done sir :)

When you're in the A position, you pivot if the ball is hit to the outfield, watch the touch and take the batter-runner in to second base if necessary. I know this video was a long time ago, would love an update on where you are today in your umpire career considering you were clearly doing little league then.

I pivot FACING the batter-runner as he touches first base to determine whether he/she will "hold up" or try to advance to 2b. Either way, I react to the runner. Also, break in to the infield DEEP ENOUGH where you are NOT in a direct line between the cut-off and 1B.

Lemme just ask, so if theres a runner just on third you should be in a position correct? If so than who has the pickoff at third? Home?

Blake Webber I know this is 10 months old, but the way I've been taught is, to stay in c position for runners on 3rd and or 2nd.

What is this? 1950's mechanics? If the coaches in this guy's league are used to only one umpire it would take more than this video to teach two-man mechanics.

It's more about how you pre-game it - usually my partner and I agree that in 1st to 3rd scenarios, PU will pick up the lead runner at 3rd.

Nate Davis with proper training you will be taught that the pu has third base on touches and tag ups. theres no option on anything else. but some upires have no traing so they have no clue where to be looking.

I have attended several CA District 4 Trainings and they all teach that the PU has plays at 3rd base in 1st to 3rd situations. There could be various other methods for 2 man that I'm not aware of but that you are following. I just wanted to point out that, in some 2 man systems, the PU does have 3rd some of the time.

Nate Davis i was only saying that the guy in the video is wrong when he says the base umpire have all the bases all the time. runner on first or first and third when theres a clean base hit to the outfield the pu will have the play at third. runners on 1st and second with less than two outs the pu will have the tag up at third.

Angle on infield hit when in A position depends on where the ball is hit, how quick you can move, and how you read the play. A hit to F4 you won't get that wide of an angle whereas a hit to F5 or F6 you can get a better angle. As for the foot being pulled, Plate should be watching for that. Base will make a judgment call and can go on his own to Plate for help on a pulled foot or can make his call and allow for an appeal if one of the teams think opposite.

terrible video, you do not move in the base path when the ball is it and 2 man umpiring home plate ump gets home and 3rd and base ump gets 1st and 2nd

@@uwontgetthisname4248 So then, I'm supposed to twiddle my thumbs at home during a run down between 2B and 3B? Your little statement of absolutism might hold true on the first play in the infield (and it does), but it is not always so on subsequent plays in the infield. If you knew anything about umpiring you would know that. Before my knees forced me to retire I worked for an association that only did 1 man for slow pitch softball. All other games, baseball and softball, were 2 man and there were plenty of situations where the PU would take plays at 3B. We all learned the same 2 man system for each sport and needed to drawn out pre-game with our partner of the day. We KNEW it stone cold and any deviation during the game was verbalized loudly and clearly as it happened.
