Agreed! I don't have a lot of time to rail fan out like you do. We have CSX and a couple of short lines but that pretty cool. The city I live in is really a cross road we get freight coming from north, south and east and west. Most trains just pass straight through with only about 25% of the freight staying here Nice video , nice comment thanks for keeping it clean.

It’s nice to watch someone who doesn’t pretend to know it all. Still working on the railroad for the last 17 years in the great white north, on the ground as a conductor and in the “seat” for the last 13 years, it gets exhausting watching people talk about things they have no idea about, EVEN I DON’T know everything and I learned from a lot of old heads with 40 plus years even learning their tricks behind the throttle. When you think you know it all, that leads to either getting hurt or killed because STEEL has NO FEELINGS...NOW YOU, say that you don’t know but I am sure if you asked a conductor or engineer they would tell you the why’s of something being done if you were to ask...Stay safe and enjoy rail fanning

As far as switching the reefers around goes; it’s a customer request. On the old MILW in Burlington, WI; there is a glassmaker that gets four covered hoppers at a time and those cars “must” be in the order of the customer’s “recipe” so once the process starts they just need to dump one carload after the other. If a car is missing the others sit in the local yard until it shows up and all four cars are delivered in the proper order.

Hi Fox Trot, we have a similar arrangement with our trains here at BHP in the Australian Pilbara. We have two rake trains totalling 268 iron ore wagons and four SD70 locos, two of which run in 'Locotrol' mode half way down the train. Each rake is generally two locos and 134 wagons. DPU works well... only one driver required... all single manned trains.

@6:10 my educated guess is, the customer wanted that car at a specified loading door, requiring the change. as to why they didn't shove it to spot may very well be because of the curvature in the track and the fact that in order to fit the cars in the track and get them to match up with the doors, they had to all be coupled. Coupeling long cars in a curve is difficult and if done wrong with a bypassed coupler can derail the car, so the adage is. never cut off in a curve. Locomotives, my area of expertise, are practically impossible to do in a curve. Not to mention, trying to m/u the things, I'm not the limber 24 year old I was when I became an engineer and couldn't get my self in between two snow plows in order to reach the cable and hoses 😂

Also in terms of another place in Georgia that has far more train traffic and for more railroad's to work with I recommend Cordele Georgia Ashburn Georgia and Tifton Georgia the reason I recommend Cordele is because CSX, Norfolk Southern, heart of Georgia, the Sam Shortline, and Genesee & Wyoming all converge there, the reason I recommend Ashburn is because that's Norfolk Southern's Mainline and I've caught plenty of action there, and the reason I recommend Tifton is because there's a museum there that has a ton of steam powered equipment it only runs on Saturdays and among the equipment is a 1917 Vulcan Iron Works steam locomotive which I have been trying to see running for I don't know how long it's all worth checking out

Danny. That is how ABS signals work. If I had to guess I would image there is one more ABS signal after that one and then an absolute signal. ABS signals always function on the conditions of the block it is protecting. CSX has been using approach limited as a "replacement" for advance approach. So in that example that next ABS signal would be an approach to a stop at the absolute signal. When I lived in west palm beach, I would go to the boynton beach tri rail station at night and facing northbound you can see three signals. The 1st signal is the intermediate to orange blossom, 2nd is the distant to orange blossom and then orange blossom. They would frequently show the aspects in the order I described. Just the ABS signals showing a more range of signals which gives an engineer more time to slow down.
@CentralPennRailProductions
5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this explanation, I was also baffled railfanning CSX when hearing an "Approach limited" called at an ABS signal, then "Approach"...then "Stop." The train didn't even cross over. You would have thought they meant to say "Advance Approach" at the first signal.
@johnpapp92
5 жыл бұрын
@@CentralPennRailProductions it's not just limited to approach limited either. It depends on the track speed. Distance between signals etc. I've seen approach medium and approach slow used for the same reason. When I was mechanical in savannah, I've even seen an approach limited to an approach medium to an approach to a stop. All signals were within 2 miles of each other.
@mcrvids6860
5 жыл бұрын
A similar setup exists on the ex-Georgia Railroad near Atlanta. On the Atlanta terminal sub, if the NE Lithonia (YYG-147.8) is at stop, the automatic at YYG-151 will be at approach, YYG-152.9 will be at advance approach (yellow over yellow) and the NE Stone Mountain (YYG-154.4) will show approach limited. My best theory is one of train handling, coming south through Stone Mountain, the speed goes from 45 to 50, the approach limited basically tells them not to throttle up if they're just going to have to start braking again.
@kennethsperanza89
5 жыл бұрын
In recent times CSX has started replacing all of their "advance approach" indications with "approach limited/medium." The reason being, Adv Approach tells a train they have an approach next, but no specific command, whereas the Approach Lim/Med force the engineer to slow to a specific speed.
@jovetj
5 жыл бұрын
Those are not ABS signals. ABS signals only exist in Automatic Block Signaling territory. This is CTC territory. An intermediate (CTC) signal may operate automatically, but that doesn't make it an "ABS signal." Sorry, as a signal nerd, this is a pet peeve of mine :)

I live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, not far from the Union Pacific Clinton Subdivision. This is part of the mainline between Chicago and North Platte. We see a great many trains with DPUs there. For a long time, there have been end-of-train DPUs but in the last few years there has been more use of mid-train DPUs. There is only one crew so the DPUs are set up to run according to the engineer's controls. As I have said in other videos, I despise combining more than one train with one crew. I prefer to see people employed. Sadly, the managers win this one for now.

Had to sleep in the truck next to the terminals track them guys when we was near the tracks they be blowing them horns like crazy. No reason other then to piss us off. Nose my my Tractor was always 2 feet behind where the fence line was, that was next to the tracks. So it wasn't for safety reasons.. Just be be an a hole.

Absolutely love the commentary - interesting to hear what is going on . We don't all know the inner workings of railroads even though we are railfans. Keep up the videos and the explanations . Agreed south Florida early in the year is a great place to visit must be fun to live there. A video of the switching around Sebring or Avon Park would be appreciated, been there many times to see the CSX drop cars and Florida Midland ?? in Pinsly red pick them up. Cheers Danny !!

What another great video! One of my favorite things to watch are locals. It is so fascinating watching the crews pull a car out, switch it back and repeat. I would love to come down to Florida sometime and see CSX maybe Danny you could show me around! Again another great video done! 👍🏻

You are one of the sharpest, smartest and professional acting and up to date rail video photographers that I have seen and I watch a lot of different railroading videos. Keep up the good work. I would like to hear what you think of this precision railroading?

Great video!!! I love Plant city. Although I don't live anywhere near there, I still think it is a great railfan spot.

i also appreciate that you do not blast the train noise into my face. That your narroation is quite background noise so its easy to understand you. i have grown to hate train horns. videos that stay out of my face are plesent to watch.

I wonder how far someone has ever walked on a rail? That takes super balance.

I’ve only just found your channel but I’m fascinated from here in the UK. Such great production and explanation and these trains make our railroad stock look like toys. Awesome. 👍

Great video and commentary yet again. Particularly love the videos you do about local customers, last mile switching etc. Totally different from our way of doing things in the UK but also totally fascinating. Keep em' coming!

Danny, go ahead and brag. Your videos are arguably some of the best and professionally done. VERY VERY VERY knowledgeable. ... still thinking in the back of my mind, you got some railroad background in ya.
