Biggest help from RPG’s was very recent. My Mom was having a lot of problems in life. Took her to lunch. She started talking about riding a bike in the Chicago area in the 50’s when she was 10 and all her adventures. I told her about ‘Tales from the Loop’. She agreed to try TTRPG’s at age 81. We have been playing weekly for a couple months now. I just interviewed her on my channel and it was even better than I thought. She articulated some of the thoughts you brought up here. It’s been awesome!

"Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisioned by the enemy, don't we consider it his duty to escape?. . .If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we're partisans of liberty, then it's our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can!" J.R.R. Tolkien I know that you said escapism is a dirty word, and I get why. If you completely focus yourself on the escapism and detach from reality you're hurting yourself. However the good part of escapism is like you described. It allows us to relax and recenter ourselves. It allows us to get away from the real life horrors and stress, and maybe even help us connect to people we wouldn't otherwise.

I have told this story before but I will tell it here. It is long so I apologize in advance. I have been a DM/GM for over 40 years now. I am a straight white Catholic man. Back in the day I played D&D with two members of the Black Panthers and we had a great time. We laughed and got to know each other somewhat well. I would like to think that while we never became good friends that these guys would consider me a friend or at least a good guy. We did occasionally talk about real world issues and had short but good conversations. We learned a bit about each other. I have also played with two skinheads and again we got to know each other and it was similar (not exact). We laughed and had a good time and these guys over time got to know me and again I would like to think they would call me a "good guy". Now we never all played together as that would have been ridiculous at that time but we all had some common ground and could play together. I like to think that I had a small impact on these guys lives where all of them now knew someone who was "a good guy" but had some profound differences in core values. I don't say all this to brag, but to make this point. Today I can't do that anymore. I can't have an open table where I would GM/DM for people. Why? Because of one group. The alphabet people. You see this is the worst cult I have ever seen. I must 100% affirm their beliefs in the real world and thus support and inject their beliefs in MY GAME, or they will attack me. Now I don't mean always attack me physically, but they will push to have be banned, fired from my job etc. They will attack my family members as well. I say all this because in my lifetime I never thought I would go from playing D&D with racist/prisoners' and having no serious problems but not being able to play with "normal" people at a game store. I even had one dude tell me, not ask me, but DEMAND I put a mask on and show him my vaccination status within this year. The guy is clearly insane. I don't charge to be a GM, it takes a lot of my free time and I do it because I enjoy it and I have seen it in the past bring people together. I never thought I would see people become like this and you hit the nail on the head with your statement. We use to agree on what was good and what was evil. Now people want to make me say something evil is good and I won't do that. Because of that, they want to attack me and then if I do defend myself they want to scream that they are being bullied. So now I have a list of my rules and unfortunately that list is still growing. I show them this list and if they complain, then I know that they can't game with my table. The current issue is that by showing some people the list, they will still want to attack me. So I am at a point where I have to ask a question like "Can you tell me what a woman is?" and if they don't laugh and answer the question super quick, then I know we shouldn't game together. The irony of all this is that when I use to GM for "dangerous" people I was told they may physically attack me. They NEVER did. Now however I am told these people are tolerant and kind, but they will attack me. Having said that, I do still find that 97ish% of the people are cool out there. We may disagree on issues but we can still sit down and play a game.

Perfect video, Servant. RPG's can really change us, even if they just give us a place to get away. They can be therapeutic, but they shouldn't be therapy. And condolences on the loss of your friend.

Role Playing games have really helped me understand communication and resource management skills over my life. Trying to untangle table disagreements and player grudges have taught me so many lessons that I've been able to use as a manager at work, that it's crazy. The most important part of that, is probably to get an understanding of the other person's perspective before trying to fix things, as well as communicating your own. As difficult as that is, doing it at the table helped me get to the point I could competently do it at work.

Stories is how human learn. TTRPGs been my life for 4 decades. It helps me understand the law of the universe and stop fighting against it. Wisdoms is the love of truths. To be an Evil DM one must understand laws/chaos (chaos is just the absence of law, like cold is the absence of energy/heat 🔥). To be a good ennemis so my players will want to be heroes to save the weak, the un-Lucky, the downtrodden... Particularly good Video Sir, please keep up the lights of Wisdoms... 🧙♂🧙♂

All that I have to say is... Brother, Preach! Even though I played a Human Fighter/Barbarian if I could get it, those games of Hero Quest and then later AD&D 2E really taught me to know where I was. I was the scrawny kid, long hair and steady getting cornered and roughed up. I did a lot of walking which meant that, sometimes, I found useful shortcuts, places to suddenly disappear. I started making use of those spots when and where I could to avoid another round of all you can eat knuckle sandwiches. It worked out pretty great.

The only statement I'll make of any political nature here is: Violence is not an acceptable means for political change. I don't have to agree with a politician to feel that their life is worth preserving. QotV: TTRPGs, and more specifically GMing, have taught me to hone a number of skills that I've used in personal/social and professional settings. Time management, budgeting, spatial awareness, expectation management, imagination, storytelling, etc. It allows me to work a number of creative muscles that I don't have a chance to work elsewhere, and also keeps sharp the myriad skills I use in my day-to-day management within a complex organizational structure.

I agree with not calling it "escapism", relaxing is a much healthier concept. It goes without saying our responsibilities towards family and work come first, nobody is running away, but you cannot grind 24/7 " sigma" or whatever people say these days, otherwise you end you grinding yourself to dust Biggest help from RPGs came in the form of learning how to take it easier, laugh at ourselves and just going more with the flow

RPGs are my escape to another world. Your talk is spot on! Jesus is my Savior and we can use our games to show what He has done in our lives and what he can do in others. It’s a great way to share your testimony as I am normally a shy person. But when I’m in character, all the fear goes away!

It's a shame. If you would simply retitle the channel RPG Elite + Jesus then all of these unbelievers would have to stop complaining. At the very least they could certainly no longer say that they felt ambushed.

Yeah. That’s not going to happen. It’s who I am. Deal with it. The vast majority of my content I’m talking about tabletop RPGs, mechanics, showcasing, etc. If someone gets butt hurt or feels ambushed because I say anything at all, that’s their problem, not mine. Life is rough. Pray hard. 😊

@@RPGElite This is weird, mebbe even difficult to enter into beacause I love your stuff in general. I have nothing but repect for your Faith. But just saying "It's who I am, deal with it" is avoiding the issue. False advertising is, I suppose at the heart of my complaint. You ar NOT your channel. You can shoehorn religion into a channel called RPG Elite and then suprise people who love your RPG stuff by then adding a little heartfelt Faith based Mysticism but as -it is such a regular thing-, do you feel no obligation to warn people that they are going to have to listen to listen to Faith Based comparisons when they come to a channel simply called RPG Elite? Or (and I think this might be the case) you are happy to continue to obscure that fact that there is religion in the mix. God, I sound like someone asking Batman "What do you have to hide?" But it IS false advertising mate. Any way you wanna cut that cake. And thats not cool. Nor is it necessary. Apart from when you are shilling for J.C. your stuff is great. I.M.O. I'll go and get an inflatable ring to sit down on now, as I am apparentley butt hurt -but honest and up front. I don't think you can claim the same. One last time. I have no problem with Religion, just with unnecessary deception. Bait and switch is what exactly?
@RPGElite
2 ай бұрын
@@feralfaith There is no baiting and switching here. You can believe that all day and you would be wrong. All you are showing is your racist tendencies, and to be clear, I'm not talking about the color of my skin. The Scriptures I mention are always related to what I'm talking about for that particular video. If you have a problem with me bringing it up because you don't like the source, that would be your problem, not mine. I'm still using it because that's how I want to present it in context. So, as I said before, deal with it... or don't. You have options. That's the wonderful thing about having your own channel on KZitem. You have the freedom to express yourself however you want to express yourself. In addition, there is the option to not watch any of my videos. Novel idea. I know. 😏 No one is forcing you to come to my channel and listen or watch the content. I am not obligated nor am I required to make you feel comfortable about how I talk about a particular subject that's related to tabletop RPGs. I am not going to police my words because I mention something from the Bible in 1 out of 8 videos that makes you feel triggered or feel I've done a bait and switch. That's on you. I'm not here to babysit your emotions. It would seem you would do your due diligence on the person whose videos you are watching to find out who they are and then make your decisions or whether or not you want to stay instead of complaining about how they do things. I'm here to create content in the way I want to create content. If you don't like it then it's very clear you're not my audience. There are plenty of other people out there who are my audience. I'm outtie.
